Adiós Nonino is an enchanting and passionate tango written by the Argentine composer and accordion player Astor Piazzolla. Although the piece was originally written for accordion Klaas van der Woude has created a great arrangement for brass band.

Expérimentateur de génie en rupture avec la tradition tanguera, virtuose du bandonéon, Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) révolutionne le langage du tango en le dissociant de la danse. Le tango fait désormais son entrée dans le domaine de la musique de concert. Un soir de 1959, Piazzolla apprend le décès de son père. Il compose un tango pour bandonéon aux caractéristiques inhabituelles : Ad os Nonino. Une œuvre intimiste, aux harmonies éthérées, qui rompt avec les rythmes traditionnels du tango.

When I was 8 years old I saw the series Mission Impossible. The music of the Argentinean Lalo Schifrin stayed in my heart from the first time.
Later, when I was a teenager, I listened to Dave Brubeck's Take Five and Paul Desmond had the same effect on me. I discovered that both were written in an unusual rhythm for the music I usually listened to when I was a student at the conservatory.
The 5/4 time signature in both of them has always fascinated me.
Tallando en Jazz is a humble tribute to these three jazz greats. They have enlightened my way of feeling music.

Elegy' is a homage to the influential 20thC English composer John W. Duarte (1919-2004). Elegy does not reflect the compositional style of Duarte, but rather is an acknowledgement of his editorial publication for Chester Music (1984) of 'Homenaje pour le Tombeau de Claude Debussy', composed by Manual de Falla (1920). Consequently, 'Elegy' adopts the compositional style of the Habanera.

I first met John W. Duarte in 1990, at the Wirral International Guitar Festival and it was on this occasion that he shared with me advice about composing for guitar. Subsequently, thereafter I met him several times at the same event and was always struck by his enthusiasm to generously share his knowledge about music. In 2020 I was honoured to be asked, by JWD's son, Chris Duarte, to edit some previously unpublished works written by his father - works that are now also published by Les Productions d'OZ.

Elegy has been recorded by the Argentinian guitarist Daniela Rossi on Brilliant Classics 97470 - John W. Duarte Guitar Music Vol.5, Homages.

« Elegy » est un hommage à l'influent compositeur anglais du XXe siècle, John W. Duarte (1919-2004).
