The twelve “London Symphonies” comprise the sublime final statement of Haydn's symphonic ouvre. They were written for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon, and Haydn himself conducted their premieres during his lengthy stays in the English metropolis in 1791/92 and 1794/95. Probably composed in the winter of 1791/92, the Symphony in D major no. 93 was, with its easily accessible (butby no means simple!) musical structure, perfectly tailored to London tastes, which demanded melodic clarity and expressive pathos. The Baroque echoes of Handel in the slow introduction to the first movement and in the festive mood of the finale with its timpani and trumpets would have been well received - no wonder the symphony had to be repeated multiple times in the same season after its performance in 1792! This study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. An informative preface and a brief Critical Report make the handy score an ideal companion for all current and soon-to-be Haydn fans.

To this day, the G-major symphony, first performed in March 1792, numbers among Haydn's most popular works. It owes its English nickname “Surprise” to the striking tutti chords in the Andante, which apparently caught the audience off guard. Haydn had consciously incorporated this effect at a later stage - and was thus subsequently also perfectly willing to authorize this nickname that had been dreamt up by a London musician. This popular work also spread rapidly through German-speaking countries, where it is still firmly established in the repertoire as the “symphony with the drumbeat.” This study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. Sandra Dackow Little Known Gem - Grade IV. cembalo in set. Attributed to Pergolesi. From the collection Six Concertini for Strings, No. 2 in G is, in many ways, the most fun of the set. With very modest technical demands, this robust selection offers thematic material for all sections. The violins are divided into four sections, making it possible to assign intermediate players to lower parts. First violins reach fifth position and there is shifting required of the cellos and basses. Short eighth and quarter notes should be kept at the frog, while more bow may be used for sixteenth notes. Transitional writing with many V7 chords brings the best of the Baroque and Classical eras together, creating a piece that is both rich and intriguing! At different times on recordings and, in some cases, print, the set of Six Concertini for Strings has been credited to Giovanni Pergolesi, Unico Wilhelm van Wassenauer, Carlo Ricciotti, and Johann Adam Birkenstock. The present consensus is that these works are from the pen of Unico Wilhelm van Wassenauer (1692-1766) of the Netherlands, though published under the name of Carlo Ricciotti, an Italian violinist and impresario. Ricciotti continues to be credited with the work in present day, furthering the mystery around the true composer of this delightful piece of music.

Daphnis et Chloe is certainly not only one of Ravel's best works, but also one of French music's most beautiful creations, thus, Stravinsky's view of this ballet in his memoirs, published in 1935. Composing the work, commissioned by the Ballets Russes, turned out to be problematic, involving linguistic differences and remuneration disagreements that dragged on among the choreographer, impresario, and composer. Too few rehearsals, a difficult choreography, tricky 5/4-meter, and other oddities in the music probably led, ultimately, to a subdued reception of the work at its Paris premiere in 1912. Only a later production with costumes and set by Chagall significantly contributed to the ballet's success. Today the work is a monument to Impressionist orchestration, incorporating the narration within the sound material. Each instrument is treated in the most effective way possible. Remarkable are the strings' extreme divisi, their harmonics' glissandi, and other enigmatic effects, such as utilizing a wordless chorus. Individual performances without choir likely go back to a makeshift arrangement that Ravel produced to facilitate performance at less prominent venues. The appendix to the Urtext edition includes this alternative version. The Ravel specialist Jean-Francois Monnard has also edited this ballet with detailed attention to the customary Urtext standard. The preface and critical report include numerous references to both genesis and performance history as well as interpretation, correcting also previously handed-down errors. The large format of the conductor's score and orchestral parts are easy to read and support the clarity and transparency of the modern notation without any loss to the magic of Ravel's music. Henry Dixon Cowell was an American composer, music theorist, pianist, teacher, publisher, and impresario. In the early 1950's, his music was summed up by Virgil Thomson as having "a wider range in both expression and technique than that of any other living composer...No other composer of our time has produced a body of works so radical and so normal, so penetrating and so comprehensive."

 

Cowell's Three Irish Legends remains one of the composer's most performed and recognizable compositions, and is noted for its striking use of tone clusters. The work is comprised of three movements: 1. The Tides of Manaunaun, 2. The Hero Sun, and 3. The Voice of Lir.
