Handel’s “Deidamia†was premièred on 10 January 1741 only a few weeks after “Imeneoâ€.The librettist Paoli Rolli , a previously unsucessful librettist for Handel, delivered with his finest work “Deidamiaâ€. On 10 February 1741 the third and final opera performances of this work took place under Handel’s direction. Oddly enough “Deidamia†would not be performed again until the beginning of the 20th century. This opera is based on the themes of humour and seriousness. The personal harmonising of Heroism (Achilles) and Love ( Deidamia ) build on the essential dramatic features of this work. “Deidamia†is the last great opera in a series of masterpieces: “Orlandoâ€, “Poroâ€, “Ezioâ€, “Ariodanteâ€, “Alcinaâ€, “Serse†and “Imeneoâ€. The vocal score is based on the Urtext of the Halle Handel Editon.

Saint-Saëns was a great admirer of the symphonic poems by Franz Liszt. His own symphonic poem “Danse macabre†reflects not only his affinity to medieval superstitions but also constitutes a tribute to Liszt’s “Totentanzâ€.“Danse macabre†is based on the eponymous song Saint-Saëns composed in 1872 after Henri Cazalis’ poem. At its premiere, the work was not well-received; in fact it was booed, possibly due to the “diabolic†solo violin playing on an E-string that was tuned down to E-flat, which the audience might have misinterpreted as being out of tune. However within ten years the work had become so popular that Saint-Saëns quoted some of its musical themes in “The Carnival of the Animalsâ€. Since the composer’s death, “Danse macabre†is among the works most often mentioned in connection with the theatrical face of death found in popular mortuary cult.

“French composer and conductor, Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Gregorian Variations on a Salve Ragina 1964. As with his other wind compositions, Gregorian Variations for Trumpet and String Orchestra and Organ reduction was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille, but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured in to musical studies by his parents, Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor, and during the summer, he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However, in 1921, he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a high profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes, often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother into his compositions. Gregorian Variations on a Salve Regina is a highly unusual and modern work based on an old Marian Hymn (a song for the Virgin Mary). The variations exploit tonality, rhythm and structure amongst other aspects. This Tomasi piece is suitable for advanced trumpeters, providing an exciting, alternative addition to the instrument's repertoire.â€.

In autumn 1895, after returning from New York once and for all, Dvorák took up his former position as teacher at the Prague Conservatory. This clearly had an inspiring impact on him because in the space of just four weeks he composed a new string quartet in G major. Together with the Quartet in A-flat major op. 105, it forms a glorious close to his chamber music oeuvre. Echoes of Bohemian folk music are here mixed with cantabile themes, while his motivic working shows him to be a master at the height of his powers. Even today, it seems almost as if we can feel the composer's satisfaction with this work: “I am working so easily and it is going so smoothly that I could not wish it better.â€.

‘Toccata Festiva’ was commissioned in 1994 by the Dutch Brass Band Championships. The wind band version was made a year later by the composer himself. Historically speaking, the toccata is considered to be one of the first independent instrumental forms for keyboard instruments. Originally the toccata was typically more or less improvised, later this musical form was given a more regulated structure. Both elements are used in the ‘Toccata Festiva’: on the one hand the different themes are developed freely, on the other, the piece has an orderly structure. It is in a three part form (quick-slow-quick) and includes both strong rhythmical figures and broad melodic lines. Partof the composition is written in a more or less archaic tone idiom, referring to the period from which the toccata form originates (16th century).

English comments: Divertimento I and Divertimento II, for two violins were composed in 1996. These two sister compositions have the additional attraction of being unedited works which are representative of the composer's most recent style. This etymological description, which defines a personality rather than an established musical style, takes the form of a succession of contrasting dynamic movements. One of the most outstanding features is the way in which the two instruments break away from their usual range of sounds to create the ideal conditions for suggesting their latent extent of sound possibilities in compositions that could be extended perfectly well into a string quartet. The interplay between the two instruments opens up a whole range of possibilities: short motives in an imitative style often braking out into a repetition of brief themes with a lot of personality, sequences of transformations, repetitive rhythms, etc. All theses show the virtuosity of the players on their own and together and because of their characteristics, they are written in a very clear tonal language, a times, modal, oriental, or even pentatonic. The progression of the movements is governed by a desire for variety: between the fast opening and closing movements there is a sequence of relaxed andante -some of which are in an easy two-part canon style- in scherzzi -and these are the lightest, most airy fragments of the two Divertimenti. Following the death of his mother in 1888, a depressed Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) decided to take a trip to his favorite destination, North Africa, travelling to Ceylon, then to Alexandria and Cairo over the period of several months. While he was in Egypt, he composed his fantasia for piano and orchestra, AFRICA, Op. 89. Dedicated to pianist Marie-Aimée Roger-Miclos, it premiered on October 25, 1891, with the dedicatee playing the solo, and the work was an immediate success both at the premiere and after, which pleased Saint-Saëns a great deal to the point that he considered AFRICA a signature work. Borrowing themes and techniques from North African music, the fantasy draws on material he heard in Algeria and Egypt, offering an exotic sound to those listening in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This concertante is notable also as one of the first works to be recorded with the composer as soloist, with a surviving 1904 recording with Saint-Saëns at the piano. Nature and landscape have been the dominant themes of much of Rhian Samuel's vocal music of the last ten years, projected chiefly through the poetry of Anne Stevenson, and in her most recent song-settings, the writings of the Pakistan-born Texas-based poet Zulfikar Ghose. His poem 'Conspiracy of the Clouds' describes how, the clouds having chosen to become invisible, 'Even the astronauts on the space shuttle / looked down on a cloudless America' as hurricanes ravage Louisiana and storms engulf Nebraska. An intriguing conceit in the tradition of magic realism, the text is presented as a scena lasting around 16 minutes, with interpolations from 'Haze' by the nineteenth-century New England transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau. Thus modern fable and romantic nature-description are juxtaposed, and their interaction becomes the source of musical contrasts too. Thoreau's words are assigned predominantly to the vocalist's highest register, those of Ghose to her lower tessitura; and the suggestive and dramatic accompaniment builds tension steadily to the final ironic response of an incredulous American public: not one of awe and wonder, but the question 'Why weren't we told about it?
