Chant des Voyelles - Incantation of Vowels (2018) for mixed choir (SSAATTBB) was premiered by Volti on May 4, 2018 at Noe Vallay Ministry in San Francisco and on May 6, 2018 at BAMPFA, in Berkeley, California.Martinaitytė encountered at the Rockefeller estate Kykuit near New York City a work by the cubist sculptor Jacques Lipchitz called Chant des Voyelles . It was titled after an Egyptian prayer composed only of vowels that was designed to subdue the forces of nature. Further research showed that many ancient traditions (Egyptians, Greeks and Tibetans) ascribed sacred, mystical and healing powers and significance to vowels. The details might vary in different traditions, yet it is clear that something miraculous happens through the very act of prolonged repetition of certain vowels - whether in the form of a mantra or prayer or as a self-healing ritual. This work experiments with subtly shifting, sometimes barely audible clouds of overtones resulting from the sustaining of certain vowels in multiple voices in a magical way.Duration: 16-17'The works of New York -based Lithuanian composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė (b. 1973) have been lauded as breathtaking and profoundly moving. Her stimulating music bristles with energy and tension and revolves often around the subject of beauty, which she calls both a guiding principle and an aesthetic measure for sonic quality.

The piano concerto in a minor stands out in Edvard Grieg's oeuvre. Besides this famous concerto, he composed only a few other large orchestral works. Because of its popularity even in Grieg's lifetime, it was often performed, not least by the composer himself. So it is not surprising that Grieg made many changes to the score up to 1907. But at the same time, the concerto's size, form and substance remained completely unaltered. Interventions in the piano part basically involved subtleties of nuance, and only a very few places in the music text were altered. The situation was different with the orchestration. Here Grieg was keen to experiment and kept filing away at the orchestra sound right up to the last. Melodies were moved to other instruments, accompanying string chords were reconstructed, and above all the list of scored instruments was changed. The main source of the Urtext edition by Ernst-Gunter Heinemann is the new edition of the score originally published in 1907 by C. F. Peters, thus several years after the first edition of 1872. Taken into account in the present edition are the changes that Grieg made up to the time of his death. Piano reduction and fingering by Einar Steen-Nokleberg.

For SSAATTBB and organ This poignant anthem was originally composed to be sung at a funeral. It is a beautifully composed work, sufficiently sombre for such an occasion, but with a celebratory element which is uplifting and comforting.

He was without argument our greatest church composer, wrote the lexicographer E. L. Gerber a few years after Homilius's death in 1785. As a result of the destruction of the Kreuzkirche during the Seven Years War, the longtime Kreuzkantor, a pupil of Bach, performed his professional musical duties primarily at the Frauenkirche in Dresden. The Passionskantate was well received and widely disseminated during the 18th and 19th centuries: Thanks to its popularity it was published in 1775 by Breitkopf as a full score - a rare honor, accorded to only one other Passion in the 18th century (Graun's Tod Jesu). The text describes the events of the Passion from a very personal point of view: The story focuses less on the actual events, then upon the feelings of the observers of these events. The subjective nature of the narrative is reflected in a very dramatically marked style of recitative, which presents a charming contrast to the expressive choral writing and the melodically accented arias. With the release of a new music editions and a SACD/CD the Passionskantate can now be rediscovered.. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3710400.

In Book 2 we progress from the first position up and beyond the half, second and third positions to reach the second high position. Shifting is also obviously treated in detail. New bowing techniques such as spiccato and col legno are on the program, as well as typical double-bass parts from orchestral works of famous composers and information concerning the instrument. This runs like a red thread through every chapter. In addition, students can indulge in jazz bass playing through their first jazz standards.Kontrabass Book 2 offers a wealth of material for the progressing young bassist. Although the text is in German, most of the technical requirements are easy to understand. (David Heyes , Double Bass Sheet Music Reviews)We didnt want to let all those enthusiastic double-bass students wait too long for the second book of Kontrabass! - so here it is!

Over its long history, the Advent song Veni, veni, Emmanuel has been adapted time and again to create many different versions with their own unique melodies and textual variants. The melody from the German Protestant hymnal to the text O komm, o komm, du Morgenstern probably dates from the 15th century. Manuel Grunden’s arrangement of this version now places the hymn in a new light. While respecting the sacred majesty of the original, Grunden has created a simple six-part arrangement in which the melody wanders through the different voices, encircled by long, dynamically shaped sustained notes. As the piece progresses, the joyful anticipation of the Savior’s anticipated arrival is expressed in impressive and dramatic climaxes. At the same time, jazz/pop harmonies bring fresh color to the simple melody. Offering a modern take on this very traditional song, Manuel Grunden’s piece can be easily integrated into any Advent concert program.

Karl L. King was the absolute master of writing marches that are very playable, but sound big and strong. Free World March is one of the best examples of his talents and this fine new edition by James Swearingen includes parts for all the modern instruments not included in the original. Skillfully edited and articulated to the style of the period, it's a perfect choice for any contest or concert performance. Our highest recommendation!

If there was ever a composer in the modern era from whom instrumentalists would hanker for a sonata or concerto, Richard Strauss must be right up there. His wide-ranging orchestral and operatic creations bleed with gloriously idiomatic writing for every instrument, and yet only the piano, violin, clarinet (in tandem with the bassoon), oboe and horn can really claim to have bespoke solo works from the composer's seamlessly productive pen, and collectively they form only a small proportion of the composer's output. No mere transcription, this three-movement Sonata after Richard Strauss extends well beyond a redeployment of the composer's music to fit a new idiom, filling the gaping chasm of 'serious' late-Romantic recital material for trumpet players, to be performed in toto or as Drei Konzertstücke. Thomas Oehler and Jonathan Freeman-Attwood have drawn on a wide range of Strauss's works to create the new offering, including the Violin Sonata, Von den Hinterweltlern (Also sprach Zarathustra), the Serenade for Winds ('From an invalid's workshop') and Zerbinetta's Aria (Ariadne auf Naxos).

I wrote the composition The Iron Tetrapod for the Graham Ashton Brass Ensemble. Originally scored for four brass instruments, I rearranged the work - at the suggestion of Ingo Goritzki - for 2 oboes, bassoon and piano, which eventually led to the new version for piano quartet.
The piece combines the world of chamber music and jazz. When it comes to phrasing and rhythm the vernacular is clearly derived from jazz. At the same time the structural development of the piece roots in chamber music traditions. With a duration of somewhat more than 4 minutes, it is a relatively compact composition, sounding well in all sorts of instrumental combinations and offers new challenges in phrasing and rhythm. Hence this makes it a very suitable study piece.
