High voltage electricity - unplugged! Tony Alonso and Michael Mahler cross currents on their exciting new recording Songs from Another Room. The range and versatility between these two young GIA artists surges with a palpable energy that only this kind of chemistry creates. Armed with only acoustic instruments, Alonso and Mahler deliver electric performances on songs like My Savior, Your Son, and Te Ensalzaré. The beautifully crafted lyrics of My Love Will Be Waiting for You tells the compelling story of the prodigal son while the emotional musical setting of And Jesus Said paints Shirley Erena Murray's gorgeous text in passionate colors of consolation. The pinnacle of this recording is surely Were I the Perfect Child of God. John Bell's provocative poetry is perfectly fused with an exquisite tune from an old Scottish love song. Songs from Another Room is a must have. It's acoustic music with a positive charge!

This work is based on the biblical story of the martyrdom of Saint Stephen, traditionally regarded as the first Christian martyr, asrecounted in the Acts of the Apostles. Stephen was a member of the early Church in Jerusalem. He was an inspired and charismatic preacher, but he aroused great hostility among the members of the various synagogues by his teachings, and he was accused of blasphemy. At his trial he looked up to heaven and declared that he saw God in his Glory, with Jesus standing at his right hand. This so enraged the authorities that he was flung from the city and stoned to death. As he died, he prayed that the Lord Jesus would receive his spirit, and that his killers would beforgiven. In this setting the choir recounts the story in Latin, whilst the solo horn music depicts the violence of the stoning. The work endswith a quotation from Chopin's Ballade No. 2 in F, Op. 38. Commissioned by the Metropolitan and Cathedral Chapter of St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna. First performed on 16th March 2015 at St Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna, by the Cathedral Choir conducted by Markus Landerer.

From the pen of Lauren Bernofsky comes a truly unique contribution to the trombone repertoire – music expressing the joys and challenges of parenthood, through a mother’s eyes. FROM A MOTHER’S JOURNAL is a suite of five movements, Love Letter, A World of Worry, Bedtime Battle, Contentment, and Little Imp, which bubble with warmth, irony, frustration, tenderness, humor … as complex a cocktail of emotions as parenthood itself. The music explores a broad range of trombone techniques, making the 10-minute suite an exciting tour de force for any recital. The idea for FROM A MOTHER’S JOURNAL originated during car ride from an IWBC conference back to New York City – Nikki Abissi and I were sharing our experiences of the challenges and joys of motherhood, and she said, “Wouldn’t it be cool to have a trombone piece written about all the emotions of motherhood?†There certainly wasn’t one that I knew about! Not long after, she contacted me about writing her exactly that piece.I thought that this was definitely a concept for a piece whose time had come, and I was immediately on board with the project. She sent me some short descriptions of some of her experiences, from the frustration of getting a rambunctious baby to go to sleep at bedtime to the boundless love she felt for not just her baby but her husband, as a father, as well. I wrote each anecdote into a short movement, and the result was a collection of musical vignettes covering a range of moods and textures as well as trombone techniques. Since I, too, am a mother, I filtered her anecdotes through my own lens, and I consider this piece to be not just a biography of Nikki but also my own autobiography.

Composed in 2004 for baritone Wolfgang Holzmair, Leisner's A Timeless Procession was premiered in 2011 with Thomas Meglioranza and the ENSO String Quartet at Symphony Space (New York City). Of that premiere, Art Leonard writes, The centerpiece of the program was the world premiere of Mr. Leisner's composition for baritone and string quartet, A Timeless Procession, setting a lengthy narrative poem by Rosemary Thomas about the parade of elephants past Carngie Hall when the circus came to town. This provided a nice balance of drama and humor... Of the music, itself, Leisner says, [Rosemary Thomas'] poem, The Elephants Pass Carnegie Hall, begins with an image, maybe real, maybe surreal, of circus elephants parading by Carnegie Hall, and ends with a sharp, mystical left turn into the prehistoric times of their ancestors. My piece views the poem through the lens of time - beginning with a primordial awakening, progressing into real time (the parade of elephants), and then through slow motion, frozen time, a return to real time (but with a surreal overlay of baritone falsetto), and finally, in the canonic last section, time past. For advanced performers.

Beauty and raw power collide in this contemporary work by William Owens that pays homage to Chan Chan, an ancient city in the desert of northern Peru. Engaging melodies and primal harmonies reveal both spectacle and mystery as the work unfolds. Surprisingly accessible despite its complex sound! (3:50).

This stunning work celebrates the men and women, past and present, who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Jerry Brubaker was the Chief Music Arranger with the United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C. Using mostly original material, Brubaker uses snippets of the various U.S. Armed Forces anthems to bring this wonderful tribute to life. The primary melody of Proudly They Served is singable, respectful, and memorable. The tune comfortably welcomes segments of all the major service songs as they make their appearance throughout. First performed by Rancho Cordova (CA) River City Concert Band, Proudly They Served makes a perfect selection for Memorial Day, Veterans Day, or any concert with a patriotic theme. (4:46).

My Exsultet uses the ancient chant to which the Easter Proclamation is declaimed, normally by a deacon at the start of the Great Vigil of Easter. The chant dates from somewhere between the fourth and seventh centuries and consists of formulaic repetitions of simple phrases. I have elaborated these phrases canonically, melodically, and harmonically into a three-part vocal fabric, accompanied by obbligato instruments. The full text of the original goes on for quite some time. My choral-instrumental version is much shorter.

Considered the greatest Italian opera composer since Verdi, Giacomo Puccini (1858--1924) created many of the most popular operas in the repertoire, including Madama Butterfly, La Boheme, Tosca, Manon Lescaut, and Turandot. His well-known gifts for lush melody and rapturous lyricism, along with his strong sense of theater, are amply evident in Il Trittico (The Triptych), a series of three highly individual one-act operas patterned after the Parisian Grand Guignol's three-part scheme of horror, tragedy, and farce. Il Trittico, which premiered at New York's Metropolitan Opera in 1918, consists of Il Tabarro, a somber, near-melodramatic tragedy; Suor Angelica, a sentimental tragedy with strong melodies and a mystic theme; and Gianni Schicchi, a delightful comedy, full of wit and vivacity, whose libretto was derived---surprisingly enough---from a few lines in Dante's Inferno. All three works appear in this single volume, reprinted from authoritative early editions.

What gave rise to this piece was my work on a scientific study about the signals emitted by bees. It was fascinating to learn that these signals are based on a finely graded micro-periodicity. My work has 15 stages designated as honeycombs. Every honeycomb focuses on about six similar events which have identical dynamics and almost identical playing techniques, tone colors and pitches, but which never create a chronologically exact periodicity. Paul J. Sifler, born in Ljubljana, Slovenia, immigrated to the United States at the age of 11, and following his studies at the Chicago Conservatory as music, led a long and prolific career as a composer and organist. The Despair and Agony of Dachau has been performed at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. and in Sifler's native Ljubljana, performances which were preceded by a reading of Psalm 22. Phrases from the Psalm beginning My God, my God, why has Thou forsaken me? are used to depict the tragedy of the concentration camp at Dachau. Among the traumas represented are the furnaces, described by a mighty roar, the scurrying of rats and barking of dogs. This work was composed to provide a history lesson for the future, and to offer the fervent prayer that mankind will never again be involved in such an atrocity.

Chant des Voyelles - Incantation of Vowels (2018) for mixed choir (SSAATTBB) was premiered by Volti on May 4, 2018 at Noe Vallay Ministry in San Francisco and on May 6, 2018 at BAMPFA, in Berkeley, California.Martinaitytė encountered at the Rockefeller estate Kykuit near New York City a work by the cubist sculptor Jacques Lipchitz called Chant des Voyelles . It was titled after an Egyptian prayer composed only of vowels that was designed to subdue the forces of nature. Further research showed that many ancient traditions (Egyptians, Greeks and Tibetans) ascribed sacred, mystical and healing powers and significance to vowels. The details might vary in different traditions, yet it is clear that something miraculous happens through the very act of prolonged repetition of certain vowels - whether in the form of a mantra or prayer or as a self-healing ritual. This work experiments with subtly shifting, sometimes barely audible clouds of overtones resulting from the sustaining of certain vowels in multiple voices in a magical way.Duration: 16-17'The works of New York -based Lithuanian composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė (b. 1973) have been lauded as breathtaking and profoundly moving. Her stimulating music bristles with energy and tension and revolves often around the subject of beauty, which she calls both a guiding principle and an aesthetic measure for sonic quality.

Lindsay E. Stetner's Lighting the Dark was inspired by the work of Nikola Tesla. This piece was inspired by a documentary called Mysteries of the Abandoned, which featured the now abandoned laboratory. The most striking feature of the property is the nearly 200-foot tall Wardenclyffe Tower. His work with electricity and the Tesla coil has become an area of fascination in our quest for cleaner energy and electric cars. (3:50).

Inspired by the bedroom community to New York City, this vibrant overture musically reflects the juxtaposition of the tranquility of nature in this quiet suburb with the busyness of modern-day life in the city. Set in ABCA form, the composition opens with a trickling melodic line depicting the beginning of the brook itself building to the energetic main theme. Musically exploring that dichotomy, the work unifies to a chorale section and builds to a frenzied conclusion. Highly recommended for concerts and contest alike! (3:00).

Rich with kaleidoscopic images, Papanui Road gives a vivid 'snapshot' of bustling central Christchurch during the 1950s—one that encompasses not only the cityscape but much of the composer's own experience and spirit. The composer writes: Having lived near Papanui Road for most of my life—having cycled, driven and walked on it, having shopped, eaten and prayed in or on it, I feel at home there. As young people say, it has 'vibes' for me. It certainly has memories... This concert overture tries to hint at the bustle, the vitality and the peace of Papanui Road; an impression rather than a picture... For all its pictorialism this concert overture is a serious, even a solemn and nostalgic work. Its aim is to evoke memories and the atmosphere of an important, busy thoroughfare in the composer's home town.

Four Pieces from Opus 11 arranged for Euphonium and Piano by Ralph Sauer are originally from a group of seven pieces for solo Piano written between 1917 and 1918, except for movement 3, Il pleure dans mon coeur comme il pleut sur la ville (It rains in my heart like it rains in the city) from 1910.The writing is very expressive and dark, possibly evoking the mood of Europe in the throes of great upheavals and the Great War.This item is now available with parts in bass and treble clef.About 12 minutes in length, these four movements are appropriate for advanced performers.

Work for solo piano. My snapshots are scribblings in pencil or ink, with a little color, and that's all -Kees van Dongen. This collection of short pieces is neither akin to sketches nor to studies, nor to preludes, nor to variations in the classical meaning of the word. They are like the rough drawings that make up a kind of travel notebook, and as such they demand a piano writing that involves widely varied musical gestures. This multiplicity of very different motifs crates sudden ruptures in the sonic atmosphere. This writing doesn't develop but rather hints at things in order to reach equilibrium between light and deep. A play on variants of the core motifs runs right through across the work. Each piece centers on a motif or a group of motifs in particular that builds the shape of a palindrome.
