The first movement Elaborations is a sonata-like structure whose ideas evolve out of the harmonic succession heard as the background material of the opening passage. The second and third movements are based on essentially the same scalar and harmonic materials as the first; however, they are somewhat different in their moods and expression, in part because they both incorporate elements derived from popular music idioms of the early part of the twentieth century. The form of the second movement, Dances,is related to the nineteenth century scherzo with two trios; here, the scherzo sections are fast and jazzy,while the more relaxed digressions are, respectively, a ragtime-waltz and a tango. The third movement Blues with Variations follows without pause, and furthermore is linked structurally to the previous movements, since the chord sequence for the blues (and subsequent variations) is the same one employed from the very opening of the work. —William Averitt.

Without doubt, the most important chamber music work by Malats, and one of his finest compositions, is his Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano in B Flat Major. It was composed in 1898.Malats dedicated the Trio to one of the greatest composers of all time, Camille Saint-Saëns, close personal friend of both Malats and Granados. An unknown gem of the chamber music repertoire, this Modernist work is superior in form, technique and musical content to similar work by Granados, Breton, Chapi and others.Malats had considerable knowledge and experience with the trio form. In 1894 at the Sala erard in Paris he performed four trios by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Godard and Saint-Saëns with C. Flesch and Hasselmann. Given his experiences with chamber music it is not surprising that Malats exhibited such confidence and security in writing his Trio maintaining perfect balance and dialogue between the three instruments which he achieved through masterful control of the formal structure. This work has a rich harmonic language and none of the Nationalist qualities of his previous pieces. Instead, it reveals Malats proximity to then current European music yet, at the same time, exhibits his personal style and musical knowledge.

I have been very fortunate and professionally blessed to have five wonderful woodwind colleagues at Arizona State University: Elizabeth Buck, flute; Christopher Creviston, saxophone; Joshua Gardner, clarinet; Martin Schuring, oboe; and, Robert Spring, clarinet. Together, we presented numerous woodwind recitals featuring all six of us in various combinations of duos, trios, quartets, and quintets. However, until now, we were never able to share the stage simultaneously. To remedy this, I arranged five movements of Stravinsky's Suite No. 1 and Suite No. 2 for Small Orchestra for the instrumentation of the ASU woodwind faculty. The source material is derived from Igor Stravinsky's Three Easy Pieces (1915) and Five Easy Pieces (1917). These compositions were written as four-hand piano educational pieces for Stravinsky's children. Stravinsky would play the more difficult accompaniments while his children played the simple melodies. Stravinsky composed arrangements of several movements using these short eight pieces, but the best-known arrangements are Suite No. 1 (1921) and Suite No. 2 (1925) for Small Orchestra. The five dance movements in Suite for Woodwind Sextet are true Stravinsky in their wit, charm, and humor.
