In a musical style strongly influenced by (and occasionally parodying) American popular music, the subtitle “Baroque†may seem a puzzle at first. It is also the key to Pann’s approach in composing for multiple wind soloists and ensemble. With Bach’s Brandenburgs in the rear-view mirror, Pann has created a glorious hybrid of inspirations with intricate counterpoint, cadenzas, beautiful slow textures, and wild rides, creating a 16-minute, fast-slow-fast concerto grosso. The published piano reduction is fully practical for live performance. My Double Concerto (subtitled “Baroqueâ€) from 2018 posed an immediate challenge which gave me some real trepidation as a composer. The two solo instruments, Clarinet and Alto Saxophone, are quite varied in their timbral characteristics yet they have nearly identical ranges. I gave many hours of thought to solving this challenge and eventually settled on an obvious mission: make each instrument as independent from the other as possible. Explore opposite areas of each range simultaneously. Set very different contours against one another in the solo parts. These kinds of things.I. Bach in the Fifties sets the soloists up as competing crooners. I wanted to write a 1950s-style teen idol tune, complete with electric organ, and writing the music I imagined J.S. Bach might tend towards if he was writing for The Platters or Perry Como. This first movement also presents within it a traditional concerto-style cadenza for both soloists together.II. Desert Arias should transport the listener to an arid, barren land over which a mirage of canons emerge.III. Pronouncements is set in the style of a baroque concerto’s final movement. Nuance is forfeited on behalf of straight-ahead melodic dueling. Stravinsky lingers like a ghost behind this finale.

Written in 2001, this work was conceived by the need to enlarge the repertoire of works for solo cello, an important goal since the repertoire of such works is limited. Most cellists are limited to performances of such well-known solo works as the Suites of Bach, written almost 300 years ago, as well as other classics of the genre by Max Reger, Zoltan Kodaly, Benjamin Britten, Gaspar Cassado, Enric Casals, etc.The intention of the Suite Exotique is to revolutionize the concept of the Baroque suite by transforming the suite into a collection of modern dances, which are both contemporary and widely recognized today. Thus, the dances of the Baroque suite, such as Allemande, Courante, Sarabande are substituted for the Tango, Milonga, Blues in such a way that the traditional formal structure of six movements of Baroque dances is modernized by rhythms and contemporary styles which coexist in the Modern world, but are separate from and do not pertain to those works which are normally considered to belong to the realm of cultured music.Apart from the fusion represented by the mixture of a Baroque genre with modern, urban musical language found in this work, the subtitle exotica is appropriate due to the originality of writing such a work for cello solo. This work allows the interpreter to explore and take full advantage of their technical, artistic and expressive abilities. This work establishes a total symbiosis between the instrument and the evolutionary transformation of its musical language which in turn creates a style adapted to the expressive requirements of the work itself. The specific techniques and qualities of the cello are placed in service of the required style and concept of each movement of the Suite. At the same time those stylistic characteristics are transformed and adapted to the particular characteristics of the cello and taking full advantage of the instruments polyphonic, sonic, aesthetic qualities as well as its timbre. The Suite Exotique was premiered in August, 2003 during the International Music Festival of Ibiza by the Russian cellist Svetlana Tovstukha.

A CD that includes four great works by Franco Cesarini performed by the Civica Filarmonica di Lugano under the direction of the Maestro. Passacaglia and Fugue in C-minor BWV 582 In Franco CesariniÂ’s arrangement for large wind orchestra, the particularly careful interpretation of the original piece enables him to exploit all the sound colors at his disposal, and in this sumptuous guise Bach's work also takes on a grandiose dimension, albeittinged with late-Romanticism. A masterpiece by Johann Sebastian Bach superbly arranged for wind orchestra. Sinfonietta No. 3 “Zwölfmalgreien Sketchesâ€, Op. 56 In composing the Sinfonietta No. 3 , Franco Cesarini was inspired by the history of the municipality of Zwölfmalgreien, made up of various towns, villages and scattered districts which were incorporated to the City of Bolzano (Italy) over one hundred years ago. The peculiarity of these places, different from each other, but all characterized by rare beauty, have contributed to create this 3-mouvement work (City Life, Mountain Shadows and Classic Wineyards), which translates into music the activities of the villages, the winter days and the lively atmosphere in the wine regions. A perfect trip to this wonderful part of Italy! Suite Siciliana, Op. 57b The Suite Siciliana, a 7-movement piece - Intrada , Pavana, Gavotta, Barcarola , Tambourin , Sicilianaand Tarantella - is characterised by contrasting rhythms and tempo and consists of these 7 dances. The musical form, typical of the Baroque period, refers to some traditional expressions of art from the land of Sicily: ranging from the rich architecture of the Sicilian Baroque to the colorful majolica ceramics and the characteristic puppets, the “pupiâ€, which narrate a secular tradition. A full immersion into ancient traditions of this beautiful island! Symphony No. 3 “Urban Landscapesâ€, Op. 55 Fascinated by the beauty of Chicago, Franco Cesarini has translated his emotions into music: this is how was born Symphony No. 3 “Urban Landscapes†, a musical portrait of this metropolis overlooking Lake Michigan. The composition is divided into three movements - The Wrigley Building from Dawn to Noon , Blue Silhouette and Cloud Gate - which by sharing the same thematic material arranged in cyclical form, strengthen the overall cohesion of the piece. Symphony No. 3 “Urban Landscapesâ€, a sumptuous musical portrait of the “Windy Cityâ€. Civica Filarmonica di Lugano Since its foundation in 1830, Civica Filarmonica di Lugano has performed at diverging events, varying from large gatherings to international jury performances. The Civica Filarmonica di Lugano is one of SwitzerlandÂ’s oldest and most prestigious music societies and consists of approximately 70 musicians. The Civica Filarmonica gives about 20 concerts a year, both at the city's concert halls and the Piazza della Riforma, the square in Lugano that.

This edition is the result of Harald Vogel's many years of practice as an organist and musicologist. The music text is based on a reevaluation of 17th- and 18th-century manuscripts containing the free organ and keyboard works by Buxtehude. They originated during a transitional phase between the traditional letter tablature and the staff notation still in use today. Since many works have survived only in transcriptions for staff notation, the editor was confronted with a high error rate, which he carefully analyzes in the Einzelanmerkungen. During the preparation of the edition, the editor always kept sight of the performance practice, but still, the image of the sources is never distorted (e. g. by superfluous rests, beaming not conforming to the sources and the unhistorical adjustment of time signatures) and stays very close to the compositional notation, the letter tablature. The flexible use of three staves and the differentiated distribution of the voices on the staves allow for an approximation in reading conventions of historical notation with its resulting information about hand division. Grouping the free organ repertoire into works with obbligato pedal and works for manuals, this edition is organized in two volumes. The first subvolume (I/1, EB 9304) contains the Preface and the Preludes, whereas the second subvolume (I/2, EB 9305) contains Toccatas, Ostinato works, alternative versions and a comprehensive Critical Commentary (in German only). Volume II (EB 9306) contains Buxtehude's free organ and keyboard works (manualiter) with the corresponding texts (Preface and Critical Commentary).Until 1971, Harald Vogel worked on a dissertation (with Georg von Dadelsen, Hamburg) on Die Fuge um Bach. Besides the description of the inclusion of triple measures into the C notation and the irregularities of the voice mutation in the polyphonic structures, this also included a discussion about the justification of the inner textual criticism. With the inner textual criticism, deviations in parallel passages are unified. The North German fugue style, reaching a peak in Buxtehude's work, is characterized by a constant diversity of details in subject and polyphonic progressions. One of the indicators of the fantastic style is the dissolution of the polyphonic structures at the ends of the fugues, evident in Buxtehude's work.In this edition, a musical text is presented that avoids the uniformity of detail not conforming to the sources. However, there are many examples of transcription and cursory errors, which are analyzed in a methodical systematic manner. We begin with an invitation to discover a work: Sigrid Naumann offers improvisational preliminary exercises that pave the way to the various pieces and are helpful for learning it. The stylistic palette is extraordinarily varied here. The pieces encompass all epochs from Baroque to classical modernity (Bartok, Kabalevsky, Kurtag, B. Heller); in addition, there are also traditionals and pieces from presentday piano pedagogy. Afterwards we distance ourselves again, for the second invitation goes out to the thematically grouped pieces that open up a variety of possibilities for free formative shaping. The new Spielregeln - Spielraume have proven themselves in practice and are supplied with insightful comments.Exploring the Rules and the Rooms of the Game Spielregeln - Spielraume (Rules of the Game - Rooms of the Game) is a dual invitation for free music-making at the piano.

A beloved star in the international jazz world, AliRyerson has developed a large and enthusiastic following, particularly among alto and bass flutists in the traditionally classicalflute community. FOLKTALE is an original workequally inspired by both worlds. Along with all the elegantcounterpoint of baroque flute duets, FOLKTALE’slanguage is grounded in jazz harmony and rhythm, fullynotated for the classically-trained performer. Performancesuggestions are provided with hints on style and phrasing. When no bass flute is available, FOLKTALE may beplayed on C Flute and Alto.FOLKTALE was inspired by a tune I wrote some years ago for my dear friend, Dr. Vivien Bonazzi. A dedicated jazzlover who hails from Canberra, Australia, Vivien is an accomplished flutist and guitarist. (Her day job is at the NationalInstitute of Health in Maryland, as Program Director in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics at the NationalHuman Genome Research Institute). Vivien commissioned me to write her a flute piece, something with a jazz feel anda written-out flute solo that would sound as if she were improvising. I enthusiastically agreed and wrote a tune titledAll Things Being Equal (a wink and a nod to the mathematical side of her personality!). I performed it only once, witha rhythm section, just before handing Vivien the sheet music. I never gave it a second thought until a couple of yearslater, when I found myself on a recording date with bass flutist extraordinaire, Wendy Stern. We so enjoyed working (andplaying!) together that day, that we vowed to join forces again as soon as possible. To speed up the process, I decided towrite us a duet. When I sat down to start composing, the melody I had previously written for Vivien kept popping intomy head. It finally occurred to me that it would make the perfect duet. So, after some major reworking of the score,FOLKTALE emerged, and I now have two very good friends to thank for its inspiration!

According to the Holy Scriptures, Abraham had a son with Sara, Isaac, who became the progenitor of the Jewish tribes, and a son withHagar, Ishmael, who became the progenitor of the Arab tribes. The French baroque painter Claude Lorrain devoted himself to this subject repeatedly, and Wolfgang-Andreas Schultz follows his conceived picture by setting three musical scenes in delicate soundscapes. The traditionally European instruments of the piano quartet also use stylized Arabian tone figurations so that both cultures are interconnected in this composition which was created in 2011/12 at the time of the Arab Spring.

These three pieces were written to provide the intermediate player with attractive new repertoire that is rewarding to play and listen to. Snake charmers traditionally use a wind instrument to 'hypnotise' their snakes, and in the first piece I imagined a charmer weaving his melody, with the piano suggesting the slow response of the snake (as well as the nasty surprise at the end!). The Arietta is in the style of a Baroque slow movement, and Moonlight Calypso evokes a dance on a Caribbean evening.

In the summer of 1939, Bela Bartok traveled to Switzerland to compose the Divertimento for String Orchestra within the two weeks in which he enjoyed the hospitality of his patron Paul Sacher. Inspired by the convivial atmosphere there, he felt like an old-world musician. The Divertimento is Bartok's highly original contribution to this traditionally entertaining genre of music. The title and three-part structure with two dance-like, vital outer movements allude to Mozart's time, whereas the cheerful alternation between solo group and tutti in the final movement tie up with the Baroque concerto grosso principle. Only the burnished glow of the middle movement suggests that Bartok found little of comfort in the world of his time just a few days before the outbreak of World War II.The Breitkopf Urtext edition is based on Bartok' autograph and the first edition of the score, which he meticulously revised. Subsequent emendations noted by Bartok in his personal copy were taken into account. The Breitkopf Urtext edition is based on Bartok's autograph and the first edition of the score, which he meticulously revised..

Inspired by the French Romantic and Impressionist traditions, my romances for fute and piano, composed during late July and early August 1984, was carefully conceived for the marvelous lyrical and technical gifts of Robert Stallman and Richard Goode, to whom the work is warmly dedicated. All three Romances, although brief in duration, unfold with a sense of large gesture and design. The first Romance is in 3/4 time and flows generally in the manner of a lyrical waltz with occasional turbulent interruptions. The second Romance is in 4/4 time, unfolding in a stately Baroque-like manner, and the third Romance is in 2/4 time, melodically expansive and often tempestuous. All three Romances strive to honor the goals of traditional performance practice while, at the same time, they create an energy and drama of modernity and contemporary richness. And for these goals I am indebted to so many of the most outstanding performers and conductors of our time with whom I have worked and from whom I have learned much– those who have demonstrated the importance of preserving in addition to further developing those significant natural attributes of musical expression and traditional performance practice which are so often ignored in contemporary compositional values. — William Thomas McKinleyFlute & Piano Duration: 14' Composed: 1984 Published by: Notevole Music Publishing.

If you enjoy singing Baroque music and value the importance of kindness, courage and compassion, this new 30 minute through-composed work by Mark Hayes for chorus, soprano and tenor soloists and orchestra is for you. Drawing from the writings of ancient and contemporary authors, the original text of âKindness,â written by Hayes, seeks to answer the question, âHow then shall we live, especially in a world that seems so dysfunctional?â The answer: live with kindness, courage and compassion. When we are joined as one in our pursuit of these values, we can make a lasting impact. To quote Margaret Mead, âNever underestimate the ability of a small group of committed individuals to change the world.â âKindnessâ is set in the Baroque tradition and features an original chorale tune with three separate texts, a fugue, both conventional and retrograde, recitative-like sections for the soprano and tenor soloists and extensive instrumental interludes. As a nod to Baroque masters such as Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel, Hayes included passages imitating âJesu, Joy of Man's Desiringâ and âHallelujah Chorus.â This work is perfect for high school and college choirs as well as community and church choirs. The text is intentionally not sacred, rather universal in its appeal. Imagine how the music and message of this work could join a community together in the pursuit of kindness, courage and compassion. It's what the world needs.. now.

The Ode was admirably set by Mr. Henry Purcell, and performed twice with universal applause. (The Gentlemen's Journal, 1692)The popularity of Purcell's setting is apparent from the many sources that survive and from the printed extracts which appeared almost immediately after its first performance. The primary source for this edition is the largely autograph manuscript in the Bodleian Library. Rather to reduce the orthography to a norm, the capitalization of the vocal text favours Purcell's preferences.(Christopher Hogwood) Vokalensemble Stuttgart und den Kammerchor des Kopernikus-Gymnasiums Wasseralfingen. My father PhDr. Jaroslav Smolka (1933-2011) was a leading Czech musicologist author of books Czech Cantata and Oratorium Fuga in Czech Music Smetana's Orchestra Music Smetana's Vocal Music monography of Jan Dismas Zelenka and many others. He was a legendary teacher of Music History at Prague Music Academy critic recording producer composer; for almost 50 years he was an important and highly respected personality of Prague musical life.My father devoted a lot of time and energy to musical education and activities of my sister and me using often quite original methods such as teaching of intervals and counterpoint through Bartok's Microcosmos ear training filling all imaginable moments of everyday life or lessons of harmony analysis starting with Overture to Tristan and Musorgsky's Catacombs. The Martinu song Wondering Maiden was his solo number in our home vocal productions which he used to sing with amazing devotion while his huge voice was audible in several neighboring streets. My Agnus Dei is closely bound to all this history e.g. by using canon and preferring beauty of dissonant seconds like Bartok or quoting Martinu and his refined neoclassical harmony. Father would be probably a bit critical about the minimalistic monotony of the main body of the piece. Nevertheless firstly he would improvise a short lecture of history of Agnus Dei in Requiem in Czech Music naming by heart many dates and all examples of changes of order of the traditional text by composers. Examples would be sung probably.(Martin Smolka).

With this Suite for guitar â?? whose main reference point is the baroque instrumental suite and its traditional dances â?? the interpreter takes a journey through various compositional styles (e.g. the use of microstructures, modality, atonality, harmony in fourths, whole-tone scales), in the form of a dance. Within the scope of this metacultural project, both performer and listener are presented with a musical juxtaposition where the baroque suite is always present as a historic reference. This project is aimed at an average level of guitar students where instrumental technique is equally as important as composition. In this respect, the Suite is useful in the areas of concert performance, in the teaching of instrumental technique and in compositional analysis.
