Robert Valentine, born in Leicester around 1680, was one of the few English masters of Baroque music who achieved fame and enjoyed a high standing beyond the borders of his home country instead of within. He made his fortune in Italy where he seemed to have spent most of his lifetime. It is assumed that he returned to England in 1731. He died at an unknown place around 1735.Valentine was a talented composer. Apart from some concertos, he mainly wrote and published solo sonatas, trio sonatas and duets, works who clearly show his preference for the flute, he himself being a flutist.

Leokadiya Kashperova (1872-1940), hitherto consigned to a footnote in musical history as Stravinsky’s piano teacher, is undergoing rediscovery. A double graduate of the St Petersburg Conservatoire, she emerged as a virtuoso pianist and composer in the romantic tradition. She was associated with some of the great musicians of her day, including Balakirev and Auer. She performed in both Germany and the UK in the 1900s, but her career petered out after 1920. The pencil manuscript of the Piano Trio in A minor (c1930-40) was discovered in 2019 in the Russian National Museum of Music, Moscow. The work has been edited for performance by Graham Griffiths in close collaboration with members of the Gould Piano Trio, who gave the world première in 2020. A four-movement work of 28 minutes' duration and in full-blooded Romantic idiom, it joins the recently republished Cello Sonatas 1 & 2 in the Kashperova Edition.

Sonata Sancti Mauritii was written in 1666 by Pavel Josef Vejvanovsky (1633?-1693) for the feast day of the patron saint of St. Mauritius Church, Kremsier, which is now Kromeriz, Czech. The date of the composition shows it to be an early work composed about two years after he joined Prince Bishop Karl Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn's orchestra as trumpeter, composer and copyist. The source for this edition is a manuscript in the Castle Archives, Kromeriz, C.S.S.R., call number Breitenbucher IV 9.This sonata contains many features of interest to trumpeters and is an attractive piece in its own right. Two noteworthy points are 1) the use of mutes to raise the pitch of the trumpets from C to D and 2) the unusual key of g minor for the trumpets with a difficult move from the f-sharp to f-natural in the first trumpet part in measures 112-113. In the latter case, a fermata has been inserted editorially for musical as well as practical reasons. This piano reduction was prepared from a modern edition of the work with strings and continue available also from Musica Rara. The string parts are preserved here as much as possible in the sections marked Tutti. The sections marked B. C. (Basso Continuo) appear here as realised in the orchestral edition.(from the Preface: Charles W. Smith, Cape Girardeau, Missouri, U.S.A., 9th March 1985).

The Adagio is based on a manuscript that was discovered in the Dresden State Library after the Second World War by Remo Giazotto, a Milanese musicologist who was working on Albinoni’s biography at the time. Only the bass line and six bars of melody were found and they probably belonged to the slow movement of a Trio Sonata. In 1945 Giazotti reconstructed the now famous Adagio which has made Albinoni known to a worldwide audience.

Concert Duets is a collection of 14 arrangements of works by prominent 18th-century composers, mostly taken from Trio Sonatas. Duet 11 is a Jim Self original work in the Rococo style; and Duets 12, 13 and 14 are arrangements of the three-movements of the Bach Concerto for Two Violins. Included with this edition are play-along recorded tracks by tubist Zach Collins, who also served as editor of the current edition.I created these duets as Christmas gifts for my tuba playing friends, with the first duet being arranged in 1976. All 14 of the duets are challenging and fun to play and are especially effective as concert pieces. As a young musician I had the privilege of playing duets with many of the world’s finest tubists including Harvey Phillips, John Fletcher, Bob Pallansch, Chester, Schmitz, Dan Perantoni, Toby Hanks, Ron Bishop, Winston Morris and Tommy Johnson. I learned more about playing music in these duo sessions than from any other musical activity I have ever experienced. Duets are powerful teaching tools for learning and mastering rhythm, phrasing and intonation and for developing overall musicianship.Jim Self:Self (b. 1943) is a Los Angeles free-lance musician, a veteran of thousands of Hollywood motion pictures, television shows and records, and tuba soloist on many prominent movies. His tuba was the “Voice of the Mothership†in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. He is Principal Tuba/Cimbasso with the Pacific and Pasadena Symphonies and the Los Angeles Opera and Hollywood Bowl Orchestras. Formerly he was in The U.S. Army Band and tuba / euphonium professor at the University of Tennessee. He holds a DMA from the USC Thornton School of Music where he is Adjunct Professor of Tuba and Chamber Music. His compositions and arrangements include works for solo tuba, brass quintet, other brass, string and woodwind chamber music, wind band and orchestra. Jim has produced many solo jazz and classical recordings. His music and recordings are available from Potenza Music and www.jimself.com. Jim Self is a Yamaha Performing Artist.Zach Collins, editor:Zach Collins is professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In 2019, he released his first solo album, Chronicle. It was recognized with the 2021 ITEA Roger Bobo Award for Excellence in Recording for the best Solo Tuba Album. His interpretation of William Kraft’s Encounters II for Solo Tuba was released on Cambria Master Recordings. This three-movement solo cantata can be performed in several ways. The instruments basically required are the trio sonata ensemble of recorder, oboe and keyboard instrument (+ a continuo melody instrument ad lib.). If necessary, as Telemann stated, the two woodwind parts can be placed by violins. The instrumental parts can also be augmented by a body of strings, playing in the ritornello sections of the two arias. Moreover, the new edition expands the performance possibilities for the work by adding a four-part chorus from the more fully scored original version, which Telemann did not publish. Score available separately - see item CA.3912000.
