With this pastoral Christmas cantata by the long-serving Royal Hofkapellmeister of Vienna, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, we wish to draw attention to a prominent baroque composer whose vocal and instrumental works have yet to achieve their historical place in the early music scene which they richly deserve. Schmelzer's easily performable pastoral music is characterized by simple melodic lines in an alpine idiom, partly in the style of Venetian baroque opera. A texture of five to seven voices alternates with settings for one or two voices accompanied by continuo.

To conclude his studies at the Vienna Conservatory he set Psalm 116 for women's choir and orchestra (1900) and dedicated to his beloved teacher Robert Fuchs, in reverence. Pietro Metastasio's libretto to azione sacra La Passione di Gesu Cristo (1730) is a prototype for the Italian Catholic oratorio of the 18th century, in which the Biblical text is entirely transformed into free verse. Originally written for Antonio Caldara, the text has been set to music many times. However, the famous poet wrote in a letter to the 26-year-old composer that the setting, in the style of Italian Opera seria, was the most expressive music that has ever been written for this poem. This Missa in G minor is the only surviving work in this genre by Johann Hugo von Wilderer; his output as Kapellmeister at the Electoral Palatinate court, which resided in Mannheim from 1720 onwards, was mainly devoted to opera. The three-part Kyrie, the through-composed Gloria, and the partly obbligato instrumental writing show the influence of the early Neapolitan mass style. The music-historic significance of the Missa is firstly that it is an important example of the church music performed around 1700 at the Electoral Palatinate court, but above all that Bach evidently used it as a source of inspiration for the Kyrie of the Mass in B minor, as shown, for example in the form of the Adagio introduction of the Kyrie I in both works.

Born in Saxony and originally trained at the St. Thomas school in Leipzig, Christoph Graupner (1683-1760) celebrated great success at the Hamburg Opera on the Gansemarkt. In 1709 he was lured away to a position in Darmstadt, where he remained for the rest of his life. The sacred composition Gott will mich auch probieren (GWV 1121/14) was written during the early years of his tenure as Music Director at the Court of the Landgraves. In it he attempted to make the genre of the motet useful for church music in Darmstadt through innovative design and varied structure. The present chorale motet is a markedly charming and catchy piece of choral music (easy to mid-level difficulty) which manages totally without solo arias and recitatives and through its compact dimensions can excellently be suited for use in today's worship services. In it, he takes up the old Venetian polychoral tradition, combining its compositional techniques with those of the instrumental concerto, the cantata and the opera. The broadly conceived cycle of movements, consisting of eight psalm verses and the doxology, is characterized by an expansive arch of tonalities connecting the two framing outer movements in D major (these are also thematically related): Dixit Dominus and Gloria Patri. After Johann Adolf Hasse had ended his career as a composer for the opera stage and finally settled down in Venice, he wrote a number of sacred works. Since he had long been obligated to the Saxon Court, where he served as a composer for three decades until 1763, these works were originally intended for the Catholic Court Church in Dresden. The solemn-pathetic Missa in G minor (1783), with the inserted movement Ad te levavi, is Hasse's final work: a crowning conclusion to an oeuvre whose significance in music history has only recently begun to be recognized and has now received the fitting acknowledgement it deserves. Immediately following his first opera Rheinberger composed a small dramatic cantata for children's voices in 1863. It is based on a story from the Gospel of St. Mark, arranged as a rhymed libretto with various roles by Franz Bonn (1830-1854). Among the highpoints of the cantata are a scene of awakening fashioned as a choral recitative with an expressive piano part and a large final chorus Preist laut den Herr. Both of these helped to make the cantata very popular in Rheinberger's days with boys' and girls' choirs. Rheinberger later arranged it with an accompaniment by a small orchestra.

Following his early departure from the opera stage in 1829, besides chamber music Gioachino Rossini composed only larger scored works of church music. The Stabat Mater is among these. It was composed in two different phases between 1831 and 1841 and received its premiere in Paris in 1842. The text is fashioned as a prayer describing Mary's pain in the face of the crucified Christ. Time and again the vivid language of this text, a Latin poem probably from the 13th century, has inspired settings by composers including illustrious names such as Pergolesi, Joseph Haydn and Verdi. In 10 movements Rossini unites different forms such as aria, duet, quartet and chorus, an operatic aria-like style of writing as well as a strict a cappella style resulting in one of the highpoints of this genre. For this arrangement, the vocal score (CV 70.089/03), choral score (CV 70.089/05) and parts for strings and timpani from the original orchestral version can also be used.
