Victoria Yagling's Suite for Cello and String Orchestra (1967) is one of her first successes as a composer. The movement layout of the Suite is fast-slow-fast-slow. The first movement, Toccata, is a perpetual motion with a brisk tempo of 100 per dotted half. The Aria is reminiscent of Rachmaninov's Vocalise melody and Prokofiev's tonal language. This movement is the centerpiece of the Suite. The Humoresque is closely connected in style and motives to the March and Aria movements from Boris Tchaikovsky's Suite for Cello Solo. Mostly homophonic Finale plays with bitonality and contains several circle-of-fifth sequences. This product is is the reduction for violoncello and piano by prof. Yuriy Leonovich. Orchestral material available on hire from the publisher. Stydy score with solo part is available for sale (ISMN 9790550116436).Victoria Yagling (1946?2011) was born in Russia and lived in Finland since 1990. Her long career as a cellist served as an excellent accompaniment to the composition she began at an early age. For 11 years she was a cello student of Mstislav Rostropovich at the Moscow Conservatory and Dmitry Kabalevsky and Tikhon Khrennikov taught her composition.Yagling won the first prize in the Gaspar Cassadò Cello Competition and the following year the second prize in the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition. Her solo engagements took her to countless countries. She has also taught at several international music courses and master classes and was often a jury member for international cello competitions.Yagling left a profilic oeuvre, and the three cello concertos are her main works. Her other orchestral works include Finnish Notebook, Lyrical Preludes and the Suite for Cello and String Orchestra. She has also composed solo works (e.g. the Suite for Cello Solo No. 1 chosen as an obligatory piece for the 7th Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1982), chamber works, including two string quartets, and vocal music. Her expressive, romantically orientated style is Russian in spirit and has grown out of the soil provided by Prokofiev and Shostakovich.

Profound Slavonic emotion and thrilling virtuosity distinguish many of Rodion Shchedrin's compositions. Even though he has long since become a citizen of the world, the composer born in Moscow has held on to his Russian origins and has never lost his ties with Russian musical folklore and poetry. In Tanya * Katya Shchedrin uses the syllabic content of the two women's names alone to develop a melodic structure that has real emotional depth. A broad arc reaches all the way from the roots of traditional Russian song to the use of contemporary techniques of composition. These songs without words create vivid profiles by purely musical means * even though we never really find out who is concealed behind these two mysterious names.

Le Rossignol or the Nightingale is originally a vocalise for Soprano solo from Saint-Saen's incidental music for the play, Parysatis written in 1902. This 4-5 minute work is all about mood.
Mr. Sauer uses the original key of B-flat, which lays perfectly for all of the bird-like calls that are in phrases which are slurred. The music has a lot of ad lib. tempo sections which gives the performer plenty of time to create that magic call of the Nightingale. Early writers thought it was the female that sang, but in fact it is the male. The Nightingale usually sings at night or just before dawn when other birds are silent and has a strong spontaneous song with an impressive range of trills and whistles.

In writing Music for Eight Lungs I wanted to treat the voice similarly to the instruments, so that the piece would weave all four parts into a fabric equally. But I also wanted to play with our perception of the voice as a vehicle for communication and language. So the vocal part is given various phonemes which seem quite word-like at times, and in fact are often drawn from the vowel sounds from Henry Purcell's 'Dido's Lament'. As I played with my own musical materials, the idea of a descending lament figure kept recurring in different ways, propelling the music forward. Hannah Lash.

The virtuosity of the Network for New Music ensemble served as the inspiration for Fantasy. While there are three distinct movements, there is no break in the musical flow. The first and second movements are bridged by a sustained climatic chord in the piano, from which the solo violin emerges to begin the Vocalise. The tentative clarinet line which closes the second movement grows into an intense trill, which in turn cues the dramatic entry of the cello in double-stops to begin the final movement. As the title implies, a certain freedom of expression pervades the whole, expressed both in terms of plasticity of line and in the bravura playing style evident particularly at the start of the final movement.

Long Road is a setting of a love poem by Paulina Barda (widow of the eminent poet Fricis Barda), who died in 1983 at the age of ninety-three; set in the original Latvian, it was Ešenvalds' contribution to Love madrigals, a collection of new commissions to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the remarkable youth choir Kamer . . . , and this English version was specially made for Stephen Layton and Polyphony, to whom it is dedicated. It has the plain sincerity of a hymn, being homophonic throughout, and its thorough-going diatonicism is straightforward yet lush. At the midway point, a gentle susurration of bell-sounds and ocarinas appears unexpectedly, there is a brief downwards shift of a third, followed by an elated return to the home key, decorated by soloistic descants, before sustained vocalise and a return of the evanescent tinkling ushers the piece to its close. This volume from the popular Cellissimo series contains 30 entertaining recital pieces, mostly from the Romantic period. In additionto three original serenades by Jacques Offenbach, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and the French composer Mel Bonis, the volume contains beautiful character pieces, mostly one-movement forms such as berceuse, elegy, humoresque, meditation, melody, nocturne, romance, tarantella, valse de concert and much more . Expressive lyrical pieces are represented as well as cheerful and virtuoso works. In addition to original works, there are numerous arrangements of popular works, including Schumann's Traumerei, Grieg's Anitras Tanz, Fauré's Après un rêve, Elgar's Salut d'amour or Rachmaninoff's Vocalise - all pieces that are well suited as concert and encore pieces . The volume also contains rarities and new discoveries, including original works by cello virtuosos such as Dotzauer, Offenbach, Goltermann, van Goens and Trowell, as well as works by composers Mel Bonis, Juliette Dantin, Ethel Harraden and Claudine Smidt. The level of difficulty is demanding and is aimed at advanced cellists. Many pieces use the 5th-7th position, others have passages in a simple thumb position, sometimes also with high harmonics. They are therefore very good practice examples for advanced users who want to apply sophisticated techniques to beautiful examples of literature. Last but not least, the requirements for expression and design offer plenty of room for cellist and musical development.
