Antônio Francisco Braga (1868-1945) belongs to the generation of Brazilian composers of the first republican period, aesthetically tied to romanticism, alongside Henrique Oswald (1852-1931), Leopoldo Miguez (1850-1902), Glauco Velásquez (1884-1914), and Barrozo Neto (1881-1941). Born in Rio de Janeiro, on April 15th, 1868, he began his musical studies at the Asilo dos Meninos Desvalidos, in 1876. In 1883, he enrolled at the Imperial Conservatório de Música where he studied harmony and counterpoint with Carlos de Mesquita – a former student of César Franck, Durand, and Massenet – and clarinet with Antônio Luís de Moura. Braga's first compositions date from this period: Sonho de Dante (1885), Dolce far niente (1886), the first Valse Romantique for piano (1886), among others. In 1887, he premiered his first symphonic work, Fantasia-Abertura. In 1890, being one of the finalists in a competition to choose the new Brazilian national anthem, Braga was awarded a scholarship to study in Europe, where he took classes with Jules Massenet at the Paris Conservatory. During this period, he wrote some of his most important symphonic works, Paysage, Cauchemar, Episódio Sinfônico, and Marabá (which was performed by Richard Strauss and the Vienna Philharmonic in 1920, in Brazil). His opera Jupyra is considered one of the greatest Brazilian compositions of that genre.Back in Brazil, he was appointed professor of counterpoint, fugue, and composition at the Instituto Nacional de Música, in 1902. There, some of the finest Brazilian composers studied with him, like Glauco Velásquez and Lorenzo Fernândez.Braga wrote operas, symphonic works, songs, sacred music, two Masses, music for piano, different chamber formations, band, and choir. He is the author of many patriotic hymns, the most popular of which is Hino à Bandeira (with lyrics by Olavo Bilac). He explored Brazilian nationalist elements in some of his works, as in Variações sobre um Tema Brasileiro and in the Trio for violin, cello and piano, whose third movement is based on a lundu (a musical genre and dance of Afro-Brazilian origin). In addition to being a composer, Braga was one of the most active conductors of his time, having been ahead of three orchestras in Rio de Janeiro: Instituto Nacional de Música, Sociedade de Concertos Sinfônicos, and Theatro Municipal. Braga conducted the Brazilian premiere of major symphonic works such as La Mer (Debussy), Pacific 231 (Honegger) besides other numerous Brazilian compositions. In 1938, he retired from Instituto Nacional de Música. He passed away on March 14th, 1945, in Rio de Janeiro.Unfortunately, Francisco Braga never wrote for the guitar. However, over a century ago his music had already been incorporated to its repertoire. According to information found in newspapers of the time, Spanish guitarist Josefina Robledo included transcriptions of pieces by Braga in her programs when she performed in Brazil: Gavota e Minuete (from the melodrama Contratador de Diamantes), in 1919, in São Paulo, and the waltz-caprice Corrupio, in 1921, in Rio de Janeiro. The piano score of Madrigal Pavane was dedicated to Alexina Leitão and published by Casa Vieira Machado, in 1901. According to the composer’s catalogue, there are two other versions of this piece: strings orchestra (1901) and quartet (which is still in manuscript). Dedicated to Braga’s childhood friend José de Souza Rocha, Timburibá (the name of a Brazilian tree) is a tango for piano from 1886, published by Narciso & Arthur Napoleão.

I have used heterophony (simultaneous variation of a single melodic line) in the choral writing, not just because it is a technique I find rewarding as a composer and as a listener, but also as a way of reflecting the 'shared inheritance' of the prayer - I mean, the many translations in which it exists and is regularly used, and the many denominations and strands of Christianity (and beyond) for whom it is a central, or model, way of speaking to God. My hope is that this piece, which may possibly have some connection to the actual physical sound of Jesus' own words, will provide a meditative and a moving experience, whether performed in a liturgical or concert setting, and whether performed by, or for, Christians or for those of any or no religious faith. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy fundamentally revised his Elijah after its successful world premiere in Birmingham in summer 1846. However, the individual layers of this revision are less visible in the autograph score than in the piano-vocal score that was made parallel to it and which the composer kept working on for its simultaneous publication in England and Germany.Awarded the German Music Edition Prize 2023.

These chants may be performed separately as well, or in pairs. They are related to madrigals and motets by Adrian Willaert, which were set to the same texts. In Willaert's collection Musica Nova (1559), quite unusually when comparing the period practice, the madrigals on Petrarca were printed beside motets on Latin sacred texts. The unusual inspiring idea to write new vocal music related to Willaert by pairing Petrarca and sacred texts was proposed by ensemble Singer Pur, who commissioned this piece. Sadie Harrison 's Hantu for Double Bass and Piano. Composed 2013 and published 2016. Duration: 8 minutes. Hantu was written especially for Nick Lum as part of the first prize awarded for his performance in the Wells Double Bass Recital Competition in 2013. The title means ‘ghost’ in Malaysian (Lum is from Kuala Lumpar), with the piece taking its inspiration from the country’s annual Festival of the Hungry Ghosts. The Piano is transformed into a westernised gamelan orchestra with ‘gongs’, ‘kendang drums’, and ‘bamboo flutes’. The music is highly repetitive with rhythm and pitch cycles used toimitate the structure of much gamelan music. The piece is divided into three main sections. The first and last are dark and menacing, marked ‘a slow procession of spirits’. The central section, entitled ‘The ghost’s dance’ is a quirky, virtuosic interplay between pizz and arco, building to a wild crescendo before a return to the procession which gradually disappears into the night. The Double Bass is often used in its highest, lyrical register, singing out fragments from a Malaysian melody entitled Anak Indung. This tune is heard over the top of the procession music, an attempt to dispel the evil spirits through the beauty of song. The piece was kindly commissioned by The Friends of Music at Wells Cathedral School and given its first performance by Nick Lum and Gemma Beeson at Wells Cathedral School on 23 June 2013.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was paid three guineas for the publishing rights to his Suite de Pièces by Schott & Co. London on 24 December 1892 when the composer was just 17 years old. In the following year the work was published by Schott Music's German office in versions for both violin with piano and violin with organ. Coleridge-Taylor was born in London and brought up in Croydon. He learnt to play the violin, was recognized as a child prodigy and at 15 was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music with Charles Villiers Stanford, where he was a contemporary of Holst and Vaughan Williams. Coleridge-Taylor described himself Anglo-African and, despite support from his colleagues, faced racism throughout his whole career. In spite of this prejudice and his tragically early death in 1912 aged just 37, he enjoyed great success during his lifetime and his music was performed at the Proms no less than 116 times between 1898 and 1939. In contrast, since 1940 his music has only been heard there on eleven occasions. Like many works, at some point in the past Suite de Pièces became out of print. Schott Music is very proud to present this new modern performing edition of the version for violin and piano. Errors and inconsistencies from the first edition have now been corrected.

Le tremblement permanent du moi-fantôme ..., a commission by the French vocal ensemble Musicatreize for the programme Twelve Lettersto Elise marking the Beethoven Year 2020, raises the question of who we are today and what remains of Beethoven's ideals, his beliefin enlightenment, equality, justice and freedom? What is the task of music, of art today - if it is not, according to Kant, directedat reason but rather at the 'affective involvement' of the recipient, if it aims to 'infect'? In her struggle for an answer, the composer addresses in her insistent and breathless piece the American conceptual artist and philosopher Adrian Piper as quasi-moral authority, who was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2015 for “inviting art viewers to engage in a life-long performance of personal responsibilityâ€.

Using four well-known poems by Else Lasker-Schüler as basis of a vocal work does not mean “setting to music†in the customary sense to the composer Lothar Voigtländer from Dresden: The colourful figure of the poetess, her unusual imageries, her (even religious) visions, as well as her close relation with renowned fine artists of her time had been on his mind for quite some time and in 2009 found their way into this composition: The dramatic, irregularly declaiming singing voice is harmonised with mystic, exotic piano farlands and the sounds of bells. This is the first time that it has been tried to put the history of music education, seen from a perspective relating to cultural history as well as to the history of ideas, into a time frame of more than 3,000 years. This is associated with the claim to paint a picture which does not begin around 800 or not even before 1800, as has been the case up to now. Musical 'world views' have influenced entire nations, periods of history and cultural areas, affecting even their political structure: Music has 'educated' in the original sense of the word. “Composed by Pierre-Max Dubois, Quartet is a really energetic and melodious piece for four Bb Clarinets. Lasting approximately 10 minutes, it is divided into four distinct parts: 1. Allegretto, 2. Allegro, 3. Pastorale and 4. Musette. During the whole piece, the Clarinets complete each other?s part on this fast work. The first part has a repetitive theme with some variations while the second one seems to be playing more on the aspects of the low and high ranges. The ?Pastorale? section is slower and slightly less cheerful. The piece ends on the ?Musette? which brings back some energy before the end. This piece would be perfect to play during a concert or a recital. Pierre Max Dubois (1930-1995) was a French composer who was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1955. Mainly composing classical music, his works are mainly for woodwinds. He is one of the founder of the Les Six and which included his professor, Darius Milhaud.â€.

Bach's B minor Mass is among the greatest and most ambitious works of all time. The various stages of composition of the Mass occupied the composer for over two decades: beginning with the Sanctus (1724), by way of the Missa of 1733, to the remaining movements of the Ordinary, which were composed during his last years. Thus the Mass, in its wealth of forms with arias, duets, as well as concertante and fugal choruses, displays the essence of Bach's skill and personal style. The greatest musical work of art of all times and all peoples (to quote the enthusiastic Hans Georg Nageli, who first edited the Mass in 1818) and one of the most demanding choral works in the repertoire is presented by Frieder Bernius, the Kammerchor Stuttgart and the Barockorchester Stuttgart in a stellar recording based on the principles of historical performance practice (Carus 83.211). Sarasate's concert career began at age seventeen after he was awarded the coveted Premier Prix from the Paris Conservatoire for both violin and composition. After his London debut, the playwright and music critique George Bernard Shaw wrote in his review that Sarasate 'left criticism gasping miles behind him.' Shaw also declared that there were many composers of music for the violin; there were but few composers like Sarasate for violin music. His vast concert repertory included many works written for and dedicated to him by Bruch, Saint-Saens, Wieniawski, Dvorak and many others. He performed his own works in an inimitable, brilliant and charming manner. His contemporaries marveled at his perfect intonation and stunning rhythmic acuity. His bowing technique was the pride of the French School of violin playing. The works presented in this volume are among his finest. All are based on Spanish popular music and are a virtuosic set for violin and piano. They are and have been in virtually every great violinist's repertory. They are also exceptionally popular as encore pieces, as well as favorites of budding virtuosos.

Armand Lonque came from a musical family, with both a father and a older brother being composers and professional musicians. His studies at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent led to a varied teaching career throughout much of central Flanders. His compositions range from solo pieces for piano, a variety of choral works, and repertoire pieces for most instruments. This sonata for flute and piano is dedicated to Francis Stoefs (flute professor at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels) and was awarded the Emile Mathieu prize for composition in 1939. The Sonata for Flute and Piano itself is an attractive work, pairing a sense of lush Faure with a stranger impressionism. A thick, gorgeously expressive first movement (with a melody that touches on Gieseking) gives way to a delicate middle movement with a quietly evolving piano ostinato underneath the unsettlingly beautiful flute. The playful, meaty finale full of sly lines brings the Sonata to a virtuosic close.

The Critical Report on the oratorio Elijah concludes the five-volume edition of this major work by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. It presents - by way of exception in the form of a volume separate from the music editions - the summary of all the editorial commentaries particularly associated with the early versions (Volume V/11A) and the final version (Volume V/11) of Elijah, which has appeared in print. With the piano reduction (Volume V/11B) and the volume containing sketches and discarded versions (Volume V/11C), the Critical Report interweaves in other ways: Since it was possible to realize an independent, self-contained commentary for the former one, the present complete report only contains the relevant source overviews and descriptions but no source evaluation and text-critical remarks. The volume of sketches and discarded versions, on the other hand, containing a classification and comments on all the musical documents the composer had not intended for the public - among them, in particular, the documentation of the work's modification for the final version - serves not least as a supplement and practical illustration of the verbal explanations contained in the Critical Report. Thus, the Critical Report, as Volume V/11D of the Edition, is intended to bundle, systematize and provide conclusive commentaries on the documents transmitted in connection with the Elijah, including not only the musical, but also all written documents - libretto drafts, correspondence, sources on the (English) reception -- that are specifically presented in this volume. The Critical Report on Elijah contains the presentation and evaluation of a total of six source collections and nearly 260 individual sources, including no fewer than 20 libretto drafts written by Mendelssohn himself or with his participation. An essential component is also a detailed chronology of the work's genesis. Mendelssohn's creative work on his second oratorio took an unusually long period of twelve years, in fact almost a third of his life.Awarded the German Music Edition Prize 2023.
