Hermann Schroeder's abundant oeuvre in the field of chorale-bound organ music is much less known among organists than his free - especially the concertante - organ works, although Hermann Schroeder as an organist felt particularly bound to liturgy and liturgical singing. And according to him, any liturgical organ music should always bear a direct relation to singing. The purpose of the present anthology is to provide the player a representative selection of Schroeder's chorale arrangements. Most of these chorales are relatively short and of medium difficulty at most. The chorale melody can be heard well most of the time so that the pieces are ideal for being used in church services. In the alphabetical index, the beginnings of song titles are accompanied by the corresponding number from Gotteslob (GL) or the Protestant Hymnal for better orientation.

In Naples, late in the year 1734, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi obtained a commission from a brotherhood of noblemen to write a new setting of the Stabat mater text in order to replace the work of Alessandro Scarlatti, who had passed away in 1725. This work, too, was to be limited to two vocal parts, which reflects the intimate character of this devotional work. Just a few years after its creation, Pergolesi's Stabat mater setting became known throughout the entire musical world, regardless of all religious boundaries. No other musical work was printed and copied more often in the 18th century than the Stabat mater. The present edition is based on the autograph, which contains corrections and deletions. It seems to have been hastily transcribed from sketches intended for the copyist's use. The publisher thus faced a particularly challenging task here.

This original piece is in a style reminiscent of the music of the rich cultural heritage of the Appalachian Mountain area. Music is an important part of the Appalachian way of life. In fact, Appalachian music is one of the best-known manifestations of the culture. Traditional Appalachian music is derived primarily from the English and Scottish ballad tradition and Irish and Scottish fiddle music. African-American blues musicians played a significant role in developing the instrumental aspects of Appalachian music as well. (2:15).

Bach's flute music brought to a successful end

Perhaps Bach actually did allow himself to be swept away by Telemann's enthusiasm for the Flute traversiere, the Baroque transverse flute, for which he wrote a whole series of pieces, including the Trio Sonata in G major BWV 1039. With the Urtext edition of the sonata, which presumably is the arrangement of a lost first version for two violins and basso continuo, Breitkopf adds the finishing touches to the series of Bach's Complete Flute Works edited by the renowned flutist Barthold Kuijken. In the publication's textual segments, Kuijken takes a comprehensive look at the various sources and versions. Also very useful for performance practice are the unique characteristics found among musicians who are particularly knowledgeable in early music. The continuo has been realized by Ewald Demeyere, taking contemporary treatises into account.A clear, informative and utterly practical edition of this much loved and important trio sonata. The musical typeface here is extremely clear and of a sensible size. Slurs, additional ornaments and annotations are precise and non-invasive, page turns are practical and the separate bass also includes figures.(Lisa Beznosiuk, The Consort)Bach's flute music brought to a successful end.

A mass setting by Robert Schumann? This is still likely to cause surprise among audiences – after all, Schumann is not generally viewed as a sacred composer. Indeed, his little-known late work, the Missa sacra, Op. 147, is a discovery not just for listeners but often for the performers themselves. The mass combines an acute fascination with sacred liturgy typical of Schumann’s time with the pragmatism of its intended use by a local choral society. The composer employs his considerable skills to create a captivating and varied score that is almost ethereal in the Kyrie, leading to passages of an intimate and lyrical piano that alternate with fortissimo for words of praise, while always displaying the utmost sensitivity and a delight in dissonance. The composer declared his setting to be “fashioned with great love”. The demanding orchestral mass can be realized with limited means. The solo parts can be filled from the choir. The work, which the composer himself did not have published, is here reissued on the basis of Schumann’s partial autograph score. Carus has also produced an arrangement of the work for choir & organ, enabling performances without orchestra in smaller venues (Carus 40.687/45).. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4068700.
