The Full Score for Peter Maxwell Davies' fourth in a series of ten string quartets commissioned by the Naxos Recording company, first performed by the Maggini Quartet on 20th August 2004 at the Chapel of the Royal Palace, Oslo, Norway, as part of the Olso Chamber Music Festival. Composer Note: The fourth Naxos quartet was written in January and February of 2004, with the intention of producing something lighter and much less fierce than its predecessor, an unpremeditated and spontaneous reaction to the illegal invasion of Iraq. I returned to the well-known Brueghel picture of children's games (1560, now in Vienna), which had been the inspiration for my sixth Strathclyde Concerto, for flute and orchestra. These illustrations liberated my musical imagination, but I feel it would limit the listener's perception to be too specific about which game relates to exactly which section of the work. Suffice it to say that there is vigorous play - leap-frog, bind the devil with a cord, truss, wrestling - alongside quieter pastimes - masks, guess whom I shall choose, courting, odds and evens. The single movement juxtaposes these activities as abruptly and intimately as they occur in Brueghel. Rather as the eye is taken into different perspectives and proportions of scale within the picture, taking liberties which would never be present in, for instance, Brunelleschi architectural drawings, so here, with a constant sequence of transformation processes, I have distorted the neat, precise implications of modal progression, expressed in the unison opening phrase (from F to B through A sharp/B flat), so that the ear is led, en route, into the sound equivalents of strange passageways and closed rooms: sicut exposition ludus. As work on the quartet progressed I became aware that I was reading into, and behind the games, adult motives and implications, concerning aggression and war, with their consequences. It was impossible to escape into innocent childhood fantasy. The nature of the F to B progression underlying the whole construction derives from a passage in the development of the first movement of Mahler's Third Symphony, and the opening of Schoenberg's Second String Quartet. However, unlike in these models, here a real - if temporary - sense of resolution occurs at the close of the quartet: as when the curtain falls on the reconciled Count and Countess in 'Figaro' one wonders how long the F/B truce will hold, and games break out again. The quartet is dedicated to Giuseppe Rebecchini, Roman architect, and friend since the nineteen-fifties.

This arrangement of two Irish folk songs is dedicated to the memory of Danny Pearl, the Wall Street journalist who was kidnapped and subsequently murdered by Islamic Militants in February 2002. The choice of Danny Boy is an obvious one. The arranger, John O'Reilly, always thinks of Danny when he hears this tune since Mr. O'Reilly's daughter was very close to Danny during their high school years. Danny was a violinist and he loved to play fiddle music. The Wearin' of the Green is in the style Danny enjoyed and the lyrics of the song relate to the struggle of the Irish people as they defied the British oppression. Correlates with Book 2. Page 15.

Charles Dickens certainly would have known the three carols in A CHARLES DICKENS CHRISTMAS. They were among the best-known and best-loved carols of the Victorian Era, and were a staple of the repertoire of roving waits, or carollers, that appear in his novels. Today this music is as familiar as Santa Claus and Tiny Tim. THE FIRST NOWELL was first collected in Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern by William Sandys in 1833. It is most probably 200 years older than that. The Oxford Book of Carols contains nine verses, which makes it an ideal processional for Christmas or Epiphany (the feast commemorating the coming of the Magi). COVENTRY CAROL, or Lully, Lullay, comes from the medieval tradition of mystery and miracle plays. In 1534 the Pageant of the Shearman and Tailors Guild included a scene in which the mothers of Jewish children sang this haunting lullaby after hearing the horrifying order: Herod the king, In his raging, All young children to slay. The music is anonymous; the text believed to be by Robert Croo. ANGELS WE HAVE HEARD ON HIGH is probably of French origin, but the English long ago adopted it as their own. Besides the French text, Les Anges dans nos compagnes, it is known in several versions and by several titles, including Angels from the Realms of Glory, When the Crimson Sun Had Set, and Westminster Carol. It belongs to a category known as macaronic carols, which mix vernacular verses with Latin refrains - in this instance, Gloria in Excelsis Deo (Glory be to God on High). Ensemble instrumentation: 1 Piccolo, 8 Flute, 2 Oboe, 1 Bassoon 1, 1 Bassoon 2, 4 Bb Clarinet 1, 4 Bb Clarinet 2, 4 Bb Clarinet 3, 1 Eb Alto Clarinet, 3 Bb Bass Clarinet & Bb Contrabass Clarinet, 2 Eb Alto Saxophone 1, 2 Eb Alto Saxophone 2, 1 Bb Tenor Saxophone, 1 Eb Baritone Saxophone, 3 Bb Trumpet 1, 3 Bb Trumpet 2, 3 Bb Trumpet 3, 2 F Horn 1, 2 F Horn 2, 2 Trombone 1, 2 Trombone 2, 2 Trombone 3, 3 Euphonium (Bass Clef), 2 Euphonium (Treble Clef), 5 Tubas, 1 Timpani, 2 Bells & Chimes, 3 Percussion 1: small triangle, suspended cymbal, crash cymbal, snare drum, bass drum, 2 Percussion 2: large triangle, finger cymbals.

Programme Note CANTICA for cello and piano (1977)When in 1975 I had finished composing my Symphony no. 3 (begun in 1973), I wrote three simple melodies for two psalm texts by Ole Sarvig: The Year and Choral Hymn. These three tunes were derived from the same material as the second movement of the symphony and could be harmonized together in several different tempo relationships, like proportional canons. For this reason they inspired me to write several choral and instrumental works in the following decade: Frost Psalm, Winter Cantata, the tuba octet Now all the earth is white with snow, Canticles (and others).Cantica, meaning song or singing, was composed (forthe Danish musicians Hans Erik Dechert og Kjeld Hansen) as a instrumental little brother the long, polyphonic choral pieces. As in these the canonical melodies in Cantica drift from foreground to background, from cello to piano. The melodies are simple, diatonic and in traditional rhythms and the surface of the music in a way traditional. The intention of the composer with this easily understood expression is to lead the listeners ears to the many internal, proportional developments. The story is in a way hidden between the lines. In the myriads of rhythmic and tempo relations the Golden Mean (near to 2:3:5:8: et cetera) plays an important role, like in nature. Among the experiences giving by this natural phenomenon are - perhaps - the musical points to be found (?).Per Norgard(1997).

When Weber offered the sonatas for violin and piano to the publisher Andre from Offenbach in 1810, the latter refused to print them because they were 'too good and demanding'. In order to reach as large a target group of music-making amateurs as possible, the editors at that time increasingly saw to the works' easy playability. Fortunately, the sonatas nevertheless found their way into the repertoire of the violinists. This is a practical edition in two volumes based on the text of the Weber Complete Edition.

The Hill Versatility Studies for Trombone for F attachment have been around for a long time, but of out print. We are proud to have brought them back into the light again to stand out as the great studies they are. Here is what Charlie Vernon, a student of William Hill has to say about these studies: When I look back on my time with Mr. Hill, 95% of all lessons that I had with him were spent studying music fundamentals from Arban, Schlossberg and Bordogni. Along with those studies we also spent time working on the basic flexibility exercises, which we now have as the Versatility Studies. I am so thankful for his insistence on the importance of the basics because that way of teaching has become the way I practice and teach all my lessons. He was a great inspiration to all of his students, and with these old books I hope to help many players who will use them and become better players and teachers.

The chiaroscuro-technique developed by painters of the Italian renaissance served to intensify contrasts and effects of optical depth. In Klar/Obskur, I tried to transfer the general idea of this technique on the rather unusual instrumentation of two double-reed woodwinds and piano. On the one hand, a clear, well articulated playing is characteristic for these instruments, on the other hand, they have an often underestimated potential of 'twilight': air-sounds and fragile, shady colours have a especially attractive when being produced by double-reed instruments (which are often, and superficially regarded as being less capable of differentiated sounds than flute or clarinet). The piano, too, has a broad bandwidth of possibilities between percussive and delicate playing to complement the woodwinds which, in return, can absorb and continue the fading piano sounds. The beginning introduces the two contrasting elements that form the basic material for the piece: a clear, sharp chord, followed by fragile, dim sounds. The changes between these elements as well as their combination and amalgamation produce an enormous spectrum of colours and gesture. After this 'motto-like' opening follow four quite clearly separated short sections, each of them being characterised by a well-defined texture: a partly almost imperceptible air-sound passage, a short sequence of microintervallic notes, a burst of virtuosity and a recourse to the fragile sounds of the beginning. The second, longer main part consists of three sections merging subtly into each other: a short unisono-passage, marked elastic [federnd], is being dissolved into its basic elements; from these remainders, a confrontation of low, 'arcane' bassoon and piano sounds and a strongly ornamented melodic line of the oboe emerges, leading to a short but powerful climax. The piece is concluded by an extended, relaxed epilogue, containing a short piano solo and a duet of oboe and bassoon and, finally, a quotation of the 'elastic' character of the middle section.Benjamin Schweitzer.

The titular Three Moments are set into baroque forms, but the material itself is not inspired by that era. The first movement is very static with pulsing rhythm and three screams in the solo clarinet. They build to the third scream, when the first clarinet finally persuades the second to do the same. The Gigue is a riddle. There are three one-bar models and three five-bars melodies, all this in 5/8 metre. Every player gets the chance to explore each model and melody, but always in different circumstances. The Fugue is very academic (apart from allusions to the first movement at the end). There is twelfth interval in the theme which creates a feeling of more than three-voice fugue in some parts.

This was written to provide a significant challenge for the ladies who premiered this piece. The motif B-E-C#-C#-A shows up frequently, which is the the name of the flute player. It was originally called Duo, but when it was performed by Kelly and Chris Vaneman of Converse College, they renamed it Jitterbug at Midnight..
