SATB Choir SKU: HL.14020069 Composed by Claudio Monteverdi. Music Sales America. Classical. Book [Softcover]. Composed 2002. Chester Music #CH09717. Published by Chester Music (HL.14020069). L'Orfeo is an opera from 1607, based around the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice. It is often cited as the earliest opera still regularly performed today. The libretto was written by the Italian lawyer anddiplomat Alessandro Striggio (1573-1630), for a carnival in Mantua. The music was composed by the Italian priest Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643), arguably the greatest composer of the Renaissance era, who is bestknown for his madrigals as well as his sacred works such as the Vespers. The Choruses From L'Orfeo have been edited by the Italian composer, musicologist and editor Gian Francesco Malipiero(1882-1973). $7.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

| 15 Fugues (ASOT 102-116) for Keyboard. Three- and Four-Part Elaboration from the original Two-Part version Ut Orpheus
Harpsichord; Organ; Early Music SKU: UT.HS-282 Composed by Alessandro Sca...(+)
Harpsichord; Organ; Early Music SKU: UT.HS-282 Composed by Alessandro Scarlatti. Edited by Francesco Tasini. Saddle stitching. Classical. Ut Orpheus #HS 282. Published by Ut Orpheus (UT.HS-282). ISBN 9790215326446. 9 x 12 inches. The two-part composition has always been an essential stage in didactic treatises for teaching counterpoint; the Duo has been of fundamental importance, since the early decades of the sixteenth century, in the teaching of singing and in instrumental practice. The interpretation and performance of Scarlatti’s Fughe a Due require on the one hand a correct and prompt interpretation of the chords which are the basis of the movement and the relationship between the two parts, and on the other an indispensable invention of a third or even a fourth part (to ensure, above all, full and significant harmony). An indication of this practice of filling in is offered by the same ms. source containing Scarlatti’s Fughe a Due. In Fugue II in D minor, in the first eleven bars, we find indicated above the Bass a series of numbers showing the interval in relation to the respective upper line. These indications should not be confused with the numerical marking typical of the basso continuo and of the partimento, for they establish a clear sign of the usual practice exercised in the teaching of counterpoint in order to guide the student visually to pass safely and speedily from two to three or more parts; this type of numbering is often found in the counterpoint methods of the time, in particular in the section illustrating the Contrapunto semplice e Diminuito. These fifteen Fughe a Due, unlike the many Duos and Duets which figure in the counterpoint methods, are not a simple display of formulas, but they assert themselves as a calculated sample of characterized styles and genres, a series of pieces conceived with an exquisite sense of form. $30.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks

2 alto voice solos, 2 soprano voice solos, 2 bass voice solos, orchestra (2 Alto Voice Solos, 2 soprano voice solos, 2 bass voice solos, Orchestra) SKU: BA.BA04081 Opera in three acts. In his libretto for “ Riccardo primoâ€, Paolo Rolli drew on Antonio Lotti’s opera “ Isacio tiranno †which had been performed in Venice in 1710. Handel needed a text with two great women’s roles, for the two best female singers of the day were members of his troupe – Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni . He had already written the operas “Alessandro†and “ Admeto †for them. He began composing “ Riccardo †in spring 1727, completing the first version on 16 May. However, following the death of King George I on 11 June 1727, the theatres remained closed. For Handel, who had become a British citizen in February 1727, the accession of George II to the throne offered new possibilities, and he embarked on a revision of the opera. With this, he was able to offer a new opera for the coronation festivities, the hero of which was one of King George’s charismatic forebears. From May onwards, Handel thoroughly revised the present score, wrote some parts anew and expanded it with particularly splendid music. Handel and Rolli also improved the plot and introduced patriotic elements to honour the British monarchy. The historic background is the third crusade against Saladin, the Sultan of Egypt and Syria , who had recaptured Jerusalem in 1187. Although King Richard I captured Cyprus and together with French crusaders stormed the fortress of Akko in the Holy Land, the crusade ended with a ceasefire and Jerusalem remained in Saladin’s hands. Richard was given the title ‘Coeur-de-lion‹’ by the English for his great military ability and bravery, although the Sicilians had first given him this name because of his relentless cruelty in clashes around Messina . The vocal score is based on the Halle Handel Edition volume published in 2005, edited by Terence Best, and contains the second version of the opera which was premiered in November 1727.
