This collection was specifically arranged to allow for flexible low brass instrumentation. The 4th part may be played on bass trombone or tuba, and the upper three trombone parts can easily be exchanged for baritones (b.c.) to the extent that these could be played solely by a baritone-tuba quartet.

Teil 1 des Buches legt die antiken Quellen in Bachs Umfeld offen und beschreibt die aktive Rezeption pythagoreischer Uberlieferung an der Thomasschule in Leipzig zu Bachs Zeit. Eine detaillierte Aufzahlung und Beschreibung pythagoreischer Kennzeichen in Autograph und Erstdruck der Kunst der Fuge schliesst sich an. In Teil 2 werden die gelaufigen Hypothesen zur Kunst der Fuge einer erkenntnistheoretischen Prufung unterzogen. Teil 3 beschaftigt sich mit der Auffuhrung bzw. Besetzung der Kunst der Fuge. Diese ist uber die Bachsche Auffuhrungspraxis hinaus von pythagoreischen Parametern bestimmt und konkretisiert sich in einem von Athanasius Kircher und Lorenz Christoph Mizler beschriebenen Stil, dem Stylus symphoniacus. Als Ergebnis tritt eine bisher nicht erkannte Besetzungsform zutage, welche das Werk endgultig vom Schicksal der Bearbeitung befreit. Hans-Eberhard Dentlers Erkenntnisse markieren einen bahnbrechenden Wendepunkt in der Erforschung dieses bis heute ratselhaften Kunstwerks.

Mention the key words Johann Sebastian and Magnificat, and one thinks involuntarily of his well-known Magnificat in D major BWV 243 or in E flat major BWV 243a. However, during the time of his tenure as St. Thomas Kantor, several times Bach also referred back to older settings of the Magnificat text and arranged these for his own purposes. Thus, for the first time it can be documented that in its original version the double choir Magnificat in C major BWV Anh. 30 contained in Bach's music library, which was originally handed down anonymously, was composed by Pietro Torri. Torri was the Music Director at the Court of the Bavarian House of Wittelsbach. For performance purposes in Leipzig in ca. 1742 Bach retained the substance of the work but composed additional parts for a 3rd trumpet and timpani. Johann Christian Bach was - as his father before him - only very seldom satisfied with the compositions that he put down on paper. Thus did this concerto too undergo many corrections/revisions by the composer and today consists of three movements of similar length. Although they were initially handed down separately at different locations, the motivic relationship as well as the melodic and figurative references among themselves clearly reveals the common identity of the three movements. Not only the final rondo is characterized by highly virtuoso passages, but both the slow, second movement as well as the introductory movement testify to youngest Bach son's compositional greatness, whose works later generations unjustly let almost fall into desuetude. All instruments get moving parts with vigorous melodies and countermelodies, while the original solos have been integrated into the sections. An excellent introduction to a classic piece of Baroque repertoire.
