Lokuttara means Ultramundane. It is the power that enables the mind to transcend beyond the world, or beyond the limits of our system. This piece is mainly focusing on the texture and timbre inspired by chanting or praying. For example, the texture of this piece is imitating the rhythm of speech or the singing of words or sounds, called reciting tones, as in a chant or a prayer. The timbre enlightens the listener to the sound and atmosphere beyond the material world, echoing the transcendence of Tibetan monk chants. The direction of the lines are mainly focused on the departure from a low register to a high register as if the mind transcends from the fiscal world to the the world beyond our system. The thematic and harmonic material are controlled by the set of pitches which function as the main material for the entire piece. Lokuttara consists of three main sections divided fast--slow--fast. Although the material is from the same pitch collection, the music in each section transforms into many different forms. Lokuttara is graciously commissioned by the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition at Brigham Young University for the United States Marine Band, Brigham Young University's Wind Symphony and Florida State University's Wind Orchestra as the Endowment's performing consortium who will premiere the work in 2015.

Concerto da Camera II is a work for six instruments which may be further grouped into three separate entities - clarinet, string quartet, piano. In this combination, chosen by the work's commissioning organizations (the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in conjunction with Mount Holyoke College), lies the work's first challenge. While pairings of any two of these three sound types abound in the concert literature, the three together form a far less common soundscape. The main difficulty appears in the necessity to reconcile the potential of both the clarinet and the piano of acting in a soloistic capacity when pitted against the string quartet. Indeed, the three movements of the Concerto deal with this problem in various ways, with the balance of power between the six instruments' potential for unity and contrast, solo and ensemble playing, continually shifting and changing.   Yet another, more delicate, balance of power is at play here, namely, the relationship between the external, foreground level of the piece and a subtler background level. What, at first, appear like small, gentle melodic strands, mere echoes or residues of the main events, gradually assume an inner life of their own. Never actually taking over yet always there, a salient, if quiet, factor within the work's compositional fabric and evolving organism.   Though each movement includes numerous tempo fluctuations, the overall thrust of the work clearly suggests a fast-slow-fast framework, with the last movement being a loosely structured, occasionally tempestuous Rondo.

The melodies from George Gershwin's (1898-1937) musicals, from 'Porgy and Bess', from orchestral pieces like 'Rhapsody in Blue' or 'An American in Paris', we all know them! But the career of the young musician started as a pianist in a music publishing house where he was to encourage customers to buy music by playing it. Soon he began to compose music himself and caught the attention of the Broadway, which paved the way to his international career. Inspired by Frederic Chopin's 24 Preludes, he began to write his own 'Preludes' for the piano in the mid-1920s: Of the five preludes composed by him, he used two for the violin composition 'Short Story' and presented the other three at a concert on 4 December 1926. These 'Preludes' combine classical moments and jazz elements into an effective whole and can be played individually or as a little jazz sonata (fast - slow - fast). Thanks to the present arrangement, the charming miniatures are now available in a version for solo instrument and piano accompaniment.

C. P. E. Bach was an innovator as an early Classical era composer, helping to develop the sonata form that was refined by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. Like his father, Carl Phillip Emanuel was prolific and showed signs of true genius.

Symphony No. 1, in three movements (fast-slow-fast), originally in D major, has been transposed down a step to C by arranger Justin Bland.

This very fine arrangement (the entire work) of about 12 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers and can be the cornerstone of a recital program.

This compact sinfonia is an early example of a true chamber sinfonia: that is, an offshoot of the Italian-style operatic overture intended from the start to be a free-standing composition for use in either public or private concerts. Wolff’s sinfonia adopts the usual Fast-Slow-Fast format, adopting the sonata form and style pioneered by Italian composers but developed more fully in Germany during the central decades of the eighteenth century. This composition, full of striking and effective contrasts of dynamics, mood and thematic content, anticipates in places the Sturm und Drang of middle-period Haydn and the finely sculpted melodic lines of C. P. E. Bach.

Originally written for violin and piano, William Grant Still's Suite for Violin and Orchestra was inspired by significant artists of the Harlem Renaissance.  Each of the three movements depict three sculptures created in the 1930s: Richmond Barthé’s African Dancer, Sargent Johnson’s Mother and Child, and Augusta Savage’s Gamin. The suite follows traditional fast-slow-fast Classical form. The first movement, African Dancer, illustrates the unrestrained urgency of the dancing figure using varying tempi and hints of the jazz. Mother and Child, later arranged for string orchestra alone, sings a gently syncopated melody in a soothing lullaby. The final movement, like the child in the sculpture Gamin, invokes mischievous and playful motifs with blues-infused fiddle techniques.
