Piano Sonata No. 3 was written in 1960 during the composer's studies at HAMU (Music Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague) under Emil Hlobil. The first half of the 1960s was the period during which Fiser's musical language underwent fundamental change as he rapidly cultivated his own, distinctive style, established in Fifteen Prints after Durer's Apocalypse. This sonata thus also includes several essential traits which shift his compositional development further. The work has two movements, however, its internal structure abandons traditional form. The piece is divided into several short, mutually contrasting sections, whereby the distinctions between the adjacent parts are emphasised by the thematic and chordal treatment. These contrasts are also supported by the chosen dynamics, tempo and other expressional means. The harmony is largely based on traditional chords or their condensed form while, in certain passages, we will nevertheless come across semitone clusters or fourth chords. The melody is still chiefly diatonic; at times Fiser uses chromatic sequences. These new elements in Sonata No. 3 indicate an attempt to simplify his writing and ensure greatest transparency and impact. This endeavour became a basic characteristic of Fiser's compositions from the mid-1960s onwards. The sonata originally bore the postscript Fantasia, which was subsequently taken out by the composer. It was first performed by Ales Bilek in 1961. The new setting for this piece is based on the single edition to date (Panton, 1967); only with regard to a few inconsistencies in the score was it necessary to consult the composer's manuscript (kept at the National Museum - Czech Museum of Music).

This is an unique arrangement for string quartet, based on a theme by Erik Satie and to which other original themes have been added. The work will certainly be a delight for the public because the sound material is treated in both classical and jazzy style. Certainly this is a piece to be enjoyed by the players, but audiences have shown that they too share the same pleasure, for sure it is a smart choice for the players that want to achieve the acclaim from the audience. This piece of music is suitable both for concerts given by professionals and for auditions in schools, colleges, conservatories or can be used in various other private events.

Jan Van der Roost was commissioned to write this hymn by the “International Association for Human Rights†in Frankfurt. The commission specified that the instrumentation of this simple hymn should be so, that it can be performed by a variety of combinations of players. The piece starts with an “intrada†for brass ensemble based on the first bars of the hymn, but is “ad libitum†and can therefore be omitted. The coda can also be left out, depending on the available instrumentation. The piece should be played “legato†to accentuate its hymn-like character.

“A strongly influential piece of repertoire, the piece Sweet And Go for solo Oboe, composed by Armando Ghidoni for Marika Lombardi, elegantly explores the poetic and technical resources of the instrument. The diptych, approximately six minutes in length, opens with an Adagio, a free declamation in recitative that is an oasis of tenderness to which the glissandi bring a whiff of the Orient. In contrast to this voluptuous dream, the second section, marked Vivo brilante ben ritmato, enables the soloist to display a sparkling virtuosity. Melodies, rhythms, nuances and colours all contribute to this festival of ingenuity.&rdquo.

I strongly encourage the thorough study of the work of Jean-Baptiste ARBAN, among which his famous Twelve Celebrated Fantasies and Air Varies. These 12 tunes, among which this piece, include all difficulties faced by a trumpet player to control his instrument. I had, together with Mireille CAPET MERAUD, lot of fun doing the recording of these Airs Varies, and I wish you a lot of joy and fun to re-discover them in this brand new version... - Franck PULCINI ; Instruments: 1 Bb Cornet 1 Piano; Difficuly Level: Grade 5.

This piece for wordless voice and small ensemble was composed as part of Ellen Reid's Soundwalk, a site-specific work created for urban parks around the world. The title comes from Christian Cooper, a black birdwatcher whose confrontation with a white dogwalker in Central Park, New York, in 2020 made headlines around the world and on social media. In the piece, ReidÂ’s music imitates the birdsong of the various species that Cooper listed in an interview with her, the final words of the interview giving the work its title.

Dating back to the 13th century, the clock tower was located in the center of a town and used by townspeople to hear the time through bells and chimes ringing out. There are clock towers all over the world and they are wonderful landmarks to towns and communities. This work begins and ends with the Westminster Chimes theme, which is used by many clocks and clock towers, including Big Ben, the famous clock tower in London. Clock Tower contains many essential musical and technical skills for a beginning level band piece. The tick of the clock mechanism is imitated by pitched woodblocks, and the main theme is based on ascending and descending scale patterns, reinforcing note-reading ability for the beginning student. There are layers of new countermelodies and contrasting sections with dynamics and legato passages, giving the students an opportunity to play in different musical styles. There is a low brass and woodwind feature and a section introducing eighth notes to the upper winds. The sound between the woodwinds and the brass are also important, but many woodwind passages are cued in the brass in case a beginning band might need extra players to help with the balance and blend. This gives the director the opportunity to experiment with these cues and add a few other instruments when needed.Dating back to the 13th century, the clock tower was located in the center of a town and used by townspeople to hear the time through bells and chimes ringing out. Stephen Houghs Paradise, written as the test piece for the 2016 National Flute Association Piccolo Artist Competition does something a little bit different; as the composer himself says, I wanted to allow the piccolo to become the romantic lead to play the passionate hero. Written in three sections, Houghs piece is a typically thoughtful, stylish and welcome addition to the piccolo repertoire.

With his 'Concerto classico' composed in 1999, Bertold Hummel enables violin pupils with only limited technical skills to play an entire little violin concerto. The second movement, Elegy, is now also available as a separate edition for viola and piano. The melody of the Finnish folk song forming the thematic foundation of the movement is melancholy and gentle: a short simple theme which is introduced and then varied several times. To master this piece, it is sufficient for the violist to command the first position, and the piano part is easy to play as well. An ideal piece for pupils, competitions and for music-making at home.

A 'Last Night of the Proms' without this march - unthinkable! 'Pomp and Circumstance Military March No. 1' with its middle section, the hymn-like 'Land of Hope and Glory' by Edward Elgar (1857-1934), belongs to the finale of the London music event like the Radetzky March usually played as last piece to the New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The fame and popularity of the other four military marches composed by Elgar between 1901 and 1907 fade in comparison to this secret national anthem of Great Britain (although strongly rivalled by 'Rule, Britannia!'). It is, indeed, an equally rousing and catchy piece of music, and the catchy tune in the middle has just become a classical 'hit'. Thanks to the present edition, all those who do not have a large symphony orchestra at home can now play this rousing march by themselves.

This piece is dedicated to all the citizens who live, have lived, and will live in the US town of Algona, who commissioned the work to celebrate itâ??s 150th anniversary. With dark-tinted tones (low drums, heavy brass), this overture begins with a primitive sacred feel, it seems as if centuries-old Indian singing is heard once more. Gradually the sound becomes clearer and brighter as the same theme travels throughout the band in various guises and variants. Imposing tutti passages then give the band the chance to lavishly shine. This bright and catchy overture radiates spontaneous energy and as it features every section of the band all the players as well as the listenersare continually surprised and captivated. What kind of music would Mozart write if he were alive today and had been exposed to jazz, rock 'n' roll, and polytonality? This piece supposes that he would start with what he knew and then figure it out on the fly! Mozart's Sandbox is a piece rich with depth and humor, but thoughtfully scored for young bands.

As an educational and recital piece, Bertold Hummel's Sonatina Op. 35, composed in 1969, has accompanied many a young musician following his or her own path. Having sold a thousand times all over the world, it is one of the composer's best-known works and hasbeen included in the repertoire list for the 'Jugend musiziert' competition by the German Music Council. The three movements are characterized by warmth and exciting rhythms: in the powerful Maestoso, the sonority of the main theme is contrasted with a lyrical side theme; the recapitulation ends with an impulsive Fugato. The second movement Elegie consists of a single soulful melody over spherical harmonies of the piano. As a highlight, playful ease, marching rhythms and dramatic intensifications alternate in quick succession in the Finale vivace, followed by wild arpeggios that conclude the piece. Originally composed for violin, versions for viola and violoncello were already commonly used. To mark its 50th birthday, Simrock / Boosey & Hawkes present the work in a revised, newly set edition. Written in the 1990s by the composer himself and now available forthe first time, the versions for alto and tenor saxophone are valuable additions to the repertoire for beginning instrumentalists.

The theme that opens my Fantasy-Variations permeates the harmonic and melodic life of the 24 short episodes and coda that follow. However, in a few sections the relationships with the theme are more hidden than explicit; the fanciful connections between these portions and the opening theme suggested the work's hybrid title. Yet even in these more wide-ranging variations the opening theme is usually still hovering nearby, often as a quiet presence contrasting with more animated gestures. The piece may be understood as a kind of dream journal: a chain of brief entries that seem to vary greatly, yet rotate about a fixed constellation of types and obsessions, speaking a language of images at once logical and impossible, familiar and mysterious. I wrote the Fantasy-Variations for the Leonardo trio in 1991 with the support of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in composition. The theme that opens my Fantasy-Variations permeates the harmonic and melodic life of the 24 short episodes and coda that follow. However, in a few sections the relationships with the theme are more hidden than explicit; the fanciful connections between these portions and the opening theme suggested the work’s hybrid title. Yet even in these more wide-ranging variations the opening theme is usually still hovering nearby, often as a quiet presence contrasting with more animated gestures. The piece may be understood as a kind of dream journal: a chain of brief entries that seem to vary greatly, yet rotate about a fixed constellation of types and obsessions, speaking a language of images at once logical and impossible, familiar and mysterious.I wrote the Fantasy-Variations for the Leonardo trio in 1991 with the support of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in composition.

Brass Ensemble - Trumpet in Eb or D, 2 Bb Trumpets, Flugelhorn, Horn in F, 3 Trombones, Bass Trombone, Tuba. A large scale ensemble in a mature and confidant style. The opening section is slow, with gentle syncopation and sophisticated harmonies including very controlled dissonances to heighten the emotion and tension of the music. This is then followed by a riotous fast section with the modal feeling of a Scottish reel, with everyone getting a piece of the action. Frequent modulations and lively syncopations drive this music forward - you can almost hear the dancers stamp the floor! At the end of this section the syncopations wind down and the music returns to the material from the start of the piece, before winding down and relaxing even further to an almost mournful conclusion. The slower sections will require sensitive and musical playing and direction, whilst the fast section requires nimble fingers and tongues to get the best from the music. Suitable for players of Grade 6 upwards.

As the title suggests, this is a fiery and energetic, dynamic overture. Jan Van der Roost was commissioned to write the piece by the Japanese ‘Band of the NEC-Tamagawa Plant’ on the occasion of its 40th anniversary. From the first measure, the brass section sets the scene with rhythmical motives. Gradually we hear melodic and playful themes, often supported by (poly)rhythmic figures. A fermate in the trombone section prepares the way for the final theme, which virtuosically leads into a reprise of the first fanfare. The dynamic circle closes!

âWind Machinesâ can refer either to the various machines that are driven by the wind, or the soaring sound of a wind band. In a cinematic style, this composition takes us high in the sky, soaring above the majestic landscape in a glider. The bold rhythms, effective scoring and artful interplay between sections gives this piece the sophisticated sound and intensity of a much more advanced piece. Dur: ca. 2:20.
