Other Woodwinds; Clarinet; Violin; Viola; Cello; Bass SKU: PE.EP73642 Composed by Roxanna Panufnik. Mixed Instruments - Clarinet & String Quartet; Solo Small Ensembles. Edition Peters. Contemporary; Multicultural. Book. 88 pages. Edition Peters #98-EP73642. Published by Edition Peters (PE.EP73642). ISBN 9790577022901. When I started work on this clarinet quintet, in October 2021, the 3-month-old Taliban takeover of Afghanistan was very fresh in everyones mind and there seemed to be a collective feeling of utter helplessness as the country descended into chaos and fear, once more. The idea for this piece came in a conversation with my Afghan friend, Gulwali Passarlay, in which he was expressing the hope that people would continue to think about Afghanistan and to remember, violent political upheaval aside, what an incredibly rich, beautiful and ancient culture this country has.
Part of this wonderful culture are the centuries-old, mythical tales, often with a moral message, that have been passed down through many generations. The Faithful Gazelle tells of a Beggar raised to riches by a magical Gazelle, only to lose everything again when she becomes sick and he ignores her pleas for help.
The clarinet with its enormous scope of timbre and pitch seemed the perfect vehicle for the Gazelle and the cello a gruff, then majestic, then gruff again Beggar!
I am deeply grateful to West Cork Chamber Festival for commissioning this work and to clarinettist Matt Hunt and the Signum Quartet for working so patiently on it, with me. Also to Gulwali Passarlay and specialist Afghan musicologists John Baily, Katherine St John and Dr Lloyd Miller for sharing their immense knowledge and love of Afghan music and culture. Roxanna Panufnik, 31 January 2022

Orchestra Cello, Contrabass, Piano, Viola, Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3 - Grade 3.5 SKU: CF.CAS91 Composed by Julie Lieberman. Carl Fischer Concert String Orchestra Series. Set of Score and Parts. With Standard notation. 16+16+10+4+10+10+12 pages. Duration 4 minutes, 31 seconds. Carl Fischer Music #CAS91. Published by Carl Fischer Music (CF.CAS91). ISBN 9781491142066. UPC: 680160630127. Key: G minor. This lighthearted quodlibet was commissioned by ASTA and premiered at the 2015 conference. It provides a fabulous tool to introduce your students to key musical themes across time. The score plays off of the musician's nocturnal mind to combine twelve historic themes by condensing and expanding them the way our subconscious mind often toys with daytime experiences. In total, this composition celebrates the string player's full potential: Where loyalty to the written note serves the imagination's creative playground. What is composition, if not a grand improvisation captured in a snapshot?. I am a firm advocate for creative conducting, so I encourage you to experiment with changes in tempi to segue between themes, and/or to take musical liberty with the actual transitions between the themes, as long as there is still a feeling of forward momentum. If you want to fulfill the theatricality of the score, it would be fabulous to look at the audience (with a raised eyebrow, or a smile on your face, or whatever facial expression you think suits these moments in the score) at m. 14 and again at m. 21.In addition, it will help to conduct with wider gestures when themes change or the volume suddenly drops or swells. This will help the audience understand that these sudden changes between themes or dynamics are intended and will also help the students highlight those spots (particularly across the complex thematic shifts between mm. 62 and 94).The grandiosity from m. 110 through the end can be pushed to its zenith, particularly if you control prior forte settings such that the end gets the grand push.CAS91FThemes in String Dreams include:1. Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star2. Second Kreutzer Etude3. Concerto in A Minor, Vivaldi 4. Cello Suite No. 1, Bach5. St. Louis Blues, W.C. Handy 6. Complete Works. 536 pages. Breitkopf and Haertel #BV 412. Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.BV-412). ISBN 9783765104121. 5.5 x 8.5 inches. German. Wagner spent the year 1860 with his wife in Paris. Three concerts with excerpts from his works had been held at the beginning of the year. Still entirely unknown in France, these pieces drew a great deal of attention and polarized the music-loving public. Wagner's main artistic goal at that time was to bring about a first performance of Tristan und Isolde. Although this plan came to naught in Paris, the imperial order to have Tannhauser played raised the tempting prospect of an international dissemination of his earlier works. The year 1860 also finally saw a decisive development in Wagner's struggle for amnesty, which had languished for several years. Wagner was once again allowed to tread on the soil of German states (with the exception of Saxony) for the purpose of performing his works. $82.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks

| Violoncello Sonatas Cello, Piano [Score] Breitkopf & Härtel
Cello and piano SKU: BR.EB-32083 Urtext. Composed by Camillo Schum...(+)
Cello and piano SKU: BR.EB-32083 Urtext. Composed by Camillo Schumann. Edited by Maria Kliegel. Solo instruments; stapled. Edition Breitkopf. With supplementary violoncello part marked by Maria Kliegel Sonata; Late-romantic. Score. 108 pages. Breitkopf and Haertel #EB 32083. Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.EB-32083). ISBN 9790004186299. 9 x 12 inches. There are many composers about whom it is believed, today, that they composed conservatively, or against the taste of their time. The question is also raised, today, which extract of this large amount of effective and high-quality music, unknown for the most part, should receive our attention; which of it is worth rediscovering or re-editing. Camillo Schumann is one of the most important representatives of these composers, but his works are still largely unknown today. He was born on 10 March 1872 in Konigstein, Saxony. His musical language combines the sound world of Brahms with the grand, late-romantic Liszt School. He wrote piano parts of incredible power and virtuosity, approaching the sounds of Rachmaninoff. His wonderfully individual melodic language makes these works a valuable testimony to a composer who never had his due recognition. The cello sonatas Opp. 59 (EB 32082) and 99 (EB 32083) are the first of three works for this combination. Op. 59 was composed around 1905/06, Op. 99 followed in 1932. Nothing is known so far of the circumstances of the composition of this work, including for whom it was composed. However, it is quite evident that Schumann wrote it, like most of his works, primarily for his own concerts and befriended musicians. The extensive entries in the piano part bear witness to a considerably practical approach. Crossed-out bars, notes added or crossed out in chords as well as a number of revisions of other kinds are more the rule than the exception. The composer's own fingerings written in the piano part also underline this assumption. The present edition contains two solo-parts each. One clean Urtext-part free of any additions from the editor and a second one with bowing marks and fingerings by Maria Kliegel who recorded both sonatas for the first time with the label Naxos. Both sonatas show evident resemblance to the works of this combination by Johannes Brahms and are therefore a must have for ambitious cellists.
With supplementary violoncello part marked by Maria Kliegel. $46.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks

Published by Carl Fischer Music (CF.SPS78). ISBN 9781491152553. UPC: 680160910052. Key: Bb major. Festival March is presented in a new edition arranged by Richard Summers. It is a tour de force composition for advanced bands and hearkens back to a bygone era during the golden age of the band movement. Directors and students will hear operatic music from composer Victor Herbert who is best known for his Christmas classic, Toyland. This is a richly scored masterpiece that deserves to return to standard status in concert band repertoire. We are proud to bring you this new setting of this cherished classic. Festival March by Victor Herbert was written for the Pittsburgh Symphony and first performed under Herbert’s direction in Chicago on Dec. 9, 1901 celebrating the 12th anniversary of Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre. Also known as the Auditorium Festival March, he included it many times for programs of a festival nature. The main theme Auld Lang Syne, a famous Scottish folk song, is incorporated many times along with brass fanfares, interludes and march melodies. This band arrangement is very similar to the original orchestral composition. The missing string parts, the addition of the saxophone section and other band instruments, editing of the superimposed triplets against sixteenth notes, to one or the other, and articulations suitable for the band, were major challenges. The style of early twentieth-century American music is captured here. This arrangement will give band musicians access to a fine piece of music that could only be appreciated by orchestra musicians up to now. Although suitable for many occasions, this piece is a great way to begin or end a December holiday concert.  Notes to the ConductorVictor Herbert’s music can be interpreted in a romantic style, which is the conductor’s responsibility to read in nuance and musicality. The beginning and other triple-tonguing sections of this piece have a March of the Toys quality to it.  The interludes and Auld Lang Syne sections are legato and musical. The March sections can also be shaped musically.About the ComposerVictor Herbert was born in Ireland in 1861 and raised in Germany. When he moved to America in 1886, he joined the Metropolitan Opera as principal cellist and eventually composed many works including forty-three operettas on Broadway from the 1890s to World War I, including Naughty Marietta and Babes in Toyland. Victor Herbert conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony from 1898 to 1904 and then was the conductor of his own Victor Herbert Orchestra. He formed ASCAP with a group of composers in 1914 and was the director until his death in 1924. Among his thirty-one compositions for orchestra, Festival March was a favorite of his and was eventually published by Carl Fischer Music.  . $150.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock

Chamber Music solo viola SKU: PR.114423570 And The People Went To Work...(+)
Chamber Music solo viola SKU: PR.114423570 And The People Went To Work. Composed by Adolphus Hailstork. 8 pages. Duration 9 minutes. Theodore Presser Company #114-42357. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.114423570). ISBN 9781491136386. UPC: 680160688920. One of the bravest and most potent calls to social action by one individual was the famous 1955 refusal by Rosa Parks to give up her bus seat, laying the groundwork for the ensuing civil rights movement. Hailstork’s title says it all, and his dramatically expressive work for solo viola declaims it all. Using a musical language that evokes action, blues, and power, along with a considerable infusion of contemplation and determination, ROSA PARKS SAID “NO†is a 9-minute instrumental monodrama perfect for any concert recital as well as special programming needs. The Montgomery bus boycott was a political and social protest campaign against the policy of racial segregation on the public transit system of Montgomery, Alabama. It was a foundational event in the civil rights movement in the United States. The campaign lasted from December 5, 1955 — the Monday after Rosa Parks, an African American woman, was arrested for her refusal to surrender her seat to a white person — to December 20, 1956, when the federal ruling Browder v. Gayle took effect, leading to a U.S. Supreme Court decision that declared the Alabama and Montgomery laws that segregated buses were unconstitutional.THE FIGHTIn addition to using private motor vehicles, some people used non-motorized means to get around, such as cycling, walking, or even riding mules or driving horse-drawn buggies. Some people also hitchhiked. During rush hours, sidewalks were often crowded. As the buses received few, if any, passengers, their officials asked the City Commission to allow stopping the service to black communities. Across the nation, black churches raised money to support the boycott and collected new and slightly used shoes to replace the tattered footwear of Montgomery’s black citizens, many of whom walked everywhere rather than ride the buses and submit to Jim Crow laws.THE TRIUMPHThe Montgomery bus boycott resounded far beyond the desegregation of public buses. It stimulated activism and participation from the South in the national Civil Rights Movement. $14.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock

In this textural tour de force, a trio of flutes creates unique sound colors and gestures to dramatically depict the archangels Michael (Warrior), Raphael (Healer), and Gabriel (Heralder). Advanced flutists will revel in this remarkable work, an intense and satisfying piece to perform as well as to hear. I have always been fascinated with the concept of archangels – huge, supernatural beings with gigantic wings who visit earth to carry out their heavenly tasks. Archangels are the “chief†angels in Judeo-Christian and Islamic religions. The precise number of these high-ranking celestial beings varies from one religious source to another (typically from four to seven). The three movements of Archangels depict Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel—the three archangels most commonly referenced.Michael is a warrior who is ever vigilant to march into battle against forces of evil. In art, he is often portrayed with his wings spread open in mid-flight and wielding a large sword that is raised into an attack position. The first movement begins in darkness with the foreboding sound of his large, beating wings. Suddenly, Michael appears in all of his terrible glory and wreaks havoc on an army of demons.Raphael is a Hebraic name that translates to “God heals,†and he is in charge of all manners of healing. Artwork of Raphael typically shows him holding a staff, and he is often pictured with the round cheeks associated with a young cherub. In this quiet middle movement, Raphael gently makes his rounds to tend to the sick.Gabriel is the heralder of news. In Christianity, Gabriel’s purpose is quite significant: he appears to Zechariah to announce the forthcoming birth of John the Baptist, and to Mary to announce the forthcoming birth of Jesus. Gabriel is often depicted holding a scepter, a stem of lilies, or an unfurled scroll. In this final movement of the piece, Gabriel trumpets his news for all to hear. $26.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

UPC: 680160014200. 8.5 x 11 inches. The idea of Song in Winter came from the imagination of the pine and the bamboo. They are so persistent and dauntless. Standing in the frigid winter, they are evergreens. In Chinese paintings, they are featured characters; in Chinese literature, they are praised as symbols against evil influences and unhealty trends. Chen Yi admires their beautiful appearances and their strong spirit and expresses their feelings through their music, which combines Chinese and Western musical materials and medium. The silence between the gestures is like the space in brush painting and calligraphy. Song in Winter is a trio written for harpsichord, dizi (bamboo flute) and zheng (Chinese zither). My idea for this piece came from the pine and the bamboo. Such persistent and dauntless trees! Standing in the frigid winter, they are evergreens. In Chinese paintings, they are the featured characters, while in Chinese literature, they are praised as symbols against evil influences and unhealthy trends. I admire their beautiful appearances and their strong spirit. I express my feelings through my music, which combines Chinese and Western musical materials and media. Using the harpsichord, an old Western instrument, and the zheng and dizi, two old Chinese instruments, I mix keyboard, plucking and blowing instruments into a whole. The silence between the gestures is like the space in Chinese brush painting and calligraphy. Although I have been living in a western society for seven years, I have found my thinking closely linked with Chinese arts. I merged them into my musical language in the trio. Song in Winter was commissioned and inspired by Prof. Joyce Lindorff, the winner of the Pro Musicis Foundation's international competition, for her March 23, 1994 concert at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, sponsored by the Foundation. It is dedicated to Ms. Lindorff and Ms. Susan Cheng, the founder and executive director of Music From China, who has been enthusiastically supporting Chinese new music in New York for many years. The work has been recorded on the album “Sparkle: Chamber Music of Chen Yi†on CRI, released in New York in 1999. The trio has also been adapted for quartet: flute, zheng (Chinese zither), piano and percussion, for ALEA III, for the premiere concert in Feb. 4, 1994, in Boston.—Chen Yi(born in China, 1953). $29.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

In 1953, with timpani and trumpets a la Marseillaise, a French piece of music once again captured public attention (Eurovision Hymn) and a composer was rediscovered: the first recording of Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Te Deum H 146 was released. The introductory fanfare not only praised God but the Sun King Louis XIV, and it opens one of the greatest works of French Baroque music. Magnificent celebration and ardent pleading, effective choruses, arias and small ensembles, plus instrumental interludes combine to create a harmonious whole, drawing its higher meaning from Charpentier's musical-theological interpretation of the Latin hymn of praise that it is based on. Sacred vocal music, Motets, Praise and thanks. Choral Score. H 146. 20 pages. Duration 25 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 21.032/05. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.2103205). ISBN 9790007240868. Language: Latin. Published by Peermusic Classical (HL.354338). ISBN 9781705107669. UPC: 840126936964. 9.0x12.0x0.109 inches. Richard Wilson was born in Cleveland on May 15, 1941. He studied piano with Roslyn Pettibone, Egbert Fischer, and Leonard Shure, andcello with Robert Ripley and Ernst Silberstein. After beginning composition studies with Roslyn Pettibone and Howard Whittaker, he went on in 1959 to Harvard, studying with Randall Thompson, G.W. Woodworth, and principally with Robert Moevs, and graduating in 1963 magna cum laude. Awarded the Frank Huntington Beebe Award for study abroad, he continued studying piano with Friedrich Wührer in Munich, and composition, again with Moevs, in Rome, where he also gave piano recitals. Wilson joined the faculty of Vassar College in 1966. He was appointed to the Mary Conover Mellon Professorship of Music there in 1988, and he has served three times as chairman of the Department of Music. Wilson has been commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony, the American Symphony, the New Juilliard Ensemble, the Koussevitzky Foundation, the Fromm Foundation, Chamber Music America, the Chicago Chamber Musicians, the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation, and the Library of Congress. His works have been heard in such American musical centers as New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Boston, Cleveland, and Los Angeles and at the Aspen Music Festival, but also in London, Berlin, Frankfurt, Zurich, Milan, Amsterdam, Graz, Leningrad, Stockholm, Tokyo, Bogota, and a number of Australian cities. The recipient in 1992 of a Guggenheim Fellowship, he was awarded the Elise L. Stoeger Prize of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in 1994, the Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2004, and has served as composer in residence with the American Symphony Orchestra since 1992. Wilson has been praised by 21st Century Music as a “splendidly talented and highly accomplished composer whose music rewards seeking out†and by the New York Sun as “possessed of a hard-won idiom that has grown and developed over the years into a probing blend of wit, classic form, modern harmony, and impressionistic color.†Writing in the New Yorker, Andrew Porter called his String Quartet No. 3 a “richly wrought and unusual composition,†while the New York Times called it “a work of substance and expressivity ... [that] merits a place in the active repertory.â€. $17.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock
