“Published in 1953, the Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra was composed by the French composer, conductor and winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1927, Henri Tomasi (1901-1971). This concerto was dedicated to Ulysse Delécluse (1907-1995), a French Clarinettist known for his transcription of 'Quinze études' by J. S. Bach for the clarinet. Each of its three movements were chosen to be the examination pieces at the Paris Conservatoire, the first movement for the Examination Solo in 1953 and the second and third for the Contest Solo in 1966. This concerto begins with an unconventional start, the clarinet playing on its own and being joined later by the orchestra. It also contains some unusual material such as polychords and dissonances through the piece. Notes on this concerto by Henri Tomasi himself were written in 1957, describing the importance of the improvisation for the principal topic.â€.

More Imaginary Folksongs (for violin and orchestra) should be seen as a companion piece to my Three Imaginary Folksongs (for clarinet and orchestra), written in 2017. Both have been written to feature a member of the orchestra which commissioned the pieces – in the clarinet pieces it was the principal clarinettist, Jacqueline Thomas, and in the present piece, the leader, Leo Byrne. As with the clarinet pieces, the present pieces might be heard as coming from imaginary places, referencing elements of the styles of earlier folksong-inspired composers. The plaintive tone of the first folksong contrasts with the livelier, dance-like patterns of the second.

Xavier Montsalvatge (1912-2002) was a consummate Spanish composer who explored many 20th century styles including Impressionism, Serialism, Modernism, and Wagnerism, while maintaining a distinctive Catalan character. He first came to prominence in 1940, after the Spanish Civil War, and is seen to represent the lost generation which was active in the second half of the 1900's. He helped to advance Spanish music from the Nationalistic style that dominated before the war, and began to introduce West Indian influences into European music. Self-Parafrasis for Clarinet and Piano was written around 1968, when Montsalvatge was just coming into the height of his compositional prowess. This work, originally for clarinet and tape, was revised by the composer in 2019 and re-scored for two clarinets. The piece is preferably played with the clarinet soloist onstage playing the upper stave while the lower stave is played offstage by a second clarinettist. The name 'solo' refers more to a state of mind than a literal description of the piece.

Grand Rag is part of a project in which 67 composers each composed a piece for solo musicians of ANAM (Australian National Academy of Music) in 2021. Elena Kats-Chernin wrote her piece in close collaboration with clarinettist Oliver Crofts for his creative and virtuoso skills. As in many of her ragtimes, the composer is interested in powerful expression and working with a limited tonal material. The clarinet part alternates between low and high registers in various sections. The piano is an equal partner, with clusters and clashing rhythms, pedal points as well as an unusual trill fantasy.
