English. Micah 6:6-8;
Matthew 6:33.
This
is the kind of piece that
might sound more
difficult than it is.
Michael Trotta employs an
economy of choral
writing: The SATB parts
are sometimes unison,
move often by steps, are
repeated in the outer
sections, and have only
occasional divisi in the
treble voices. The text
is an innovative
combination of Old and
New Testament passages,
put in a
question-and-answer
format with the question
sung in a subdued matter
and the answer
intensifying in range,
complexity, and volume.
The piano and flute parts
flow more quickly than
the voices—save
for a short, contrasting
middle section—and
provide an underlying
momentum to this
expressive work.

The text
for When I Grow Up first
came to me while I was
teaching in Houston,
Texas. I noticed that my
students were becoming
more and more concerned
about what steps they had
to take as students to
secure a future for
themselves decades ahead.
Young people are finding
themselves having to make
lifelong decisions at a
time where they are still
in a season of
exploration and
wonderment. I then asked
myself, What happened to
discovery through play
and imagination?With the
help of one of my former
and forever choir
students, Monica Juarez,
we took my original text
and created illustrations
of a young Coty in New
Orleans, Louisiana
imagining, in real time,
all of the things that
she could be! It was
important to me that the
images were of real
things that I had seen
growing up every day.That
we are limitless and that
it's only in the
pressures of growing up
that we can lose our
creativity, I hope this
text allows both singers
and conductor to let
their imagination take
the lead and shape the
journey ahead!Sing with
JOY!—Coty
Occasionally, when I get
to visit with young
people, I’ll ask,
Has anyone ever asked you
want to be when you grow
up? All the hands go up.
Children say yes, and
then proceed to tell me
what they want to be when
they grow up. So, then I
ask a follow-up question,
Why on earth do you have
to wait until
you’re a grown-up
to be somebody?!When I
first read through
Coty’s text, I was
so moved by how clear and
beautiful that message of
empowerment shines
through:I want to live,
and that begins now. I
want to be happy. And I
refuse to wait until I
grow up.I also was struck
by her imaginative use of
the four classical
elements—air,
water, fire, and
earth—to bring us
on a journey of discovery
and wonder.I’ve
tried my best to, not so
much set Coty’s
words to a tune, as to go
along with her on the
journey and see what
music would emerge. And
I’m so happy
you’ve joined us
on the journey,
too.Welcome!—Mark.

Col
orado Springs was
commissioned by the
United States Air Force
Academy Band, Lieutenant
Steve Grimo,
Commmander/Conductor.
Colorado Springs, home of
the USAF Academy, is set
in spectacular landscape
towards the southern end
of the Rocky Mountains
and is a popular tourist
resort for skiing and
hiking. The Academy plays
an important part in the
life of the area and
serves as a base for the
USAFA Band, one of the
professional bands
forming part of the
musical life of the U.S.
Air Force. The suite is
in three movements: 1.
The Springs (fanfare) -
“The Springsâ€
is the local residents'
name for the town, and
this first movement
starts with a stirring
fanfare for brass and
percussion, opening with
bold unison horns. The
rest of the brass join in
and woodwind add
decorative figures. After
a short change of style,
the opening material
reappears to close the
movement. 2. Seven Falls
- Seven Falls is a
spectacular waterfall
near to the town which
cascades 181 feet in
seven distinct steps down
a solid cliff of pikes
peak granite. In this
movement, high woodwinds
describe the sparkling
water as it descends to a
popular lookout post near
the bottom of the falls.
3. Pikes Peak - To the
north-west of the town
and reaching an altitude
14,110 feet, Pikes Peak
is the farthest east of
the big peaks in the
Rocky Mountain chain,
which contributed to its
early fame among
explorers and pioneers,
and made it the symbol of
the 1859 Gold Rush to
Colorado with the slogan,
“Pikes Peak or
Bust.†It is the
second-most visited
mountain in the world
behind Japan's Mount
Fuji. This atmospheric
movement describes the
majesty of the mountain
and is based around the
fanfare from the first
movement. Opening on a
solitary bassoon, it is
not long before the main
theme appears under
bubbling woodwinds. The
music reaches a
passionate climax at
which point the opening
fanfare reappears to
bring the whole work to a
close.

Nico
Schoeters took his first
percussion lessons with
Eric Buyle in the Academy
for Music and Word in
Boom, near Antwerp, after
getting the hang of it
through private lessons
by Jozef Vervliet.
Afterwards he continued
his music studies at the
Royal Conservatory of
Antwerp, where he was
taught by Leo Ouderits,
Carlo Willems and Koen
Wilmaers. In 1998 he
graduated there with
great distinction as
Master in percussion.
After cooperating on
various projects in
Belgium and abroad as a
freelance percussionist,
Nico took up a position
as a percussionist in the
National Orchestra of
Belgium. However, despite
of all his achievements
as a percussionist, Nico
Schoeters didn’t
take his first musical
steps by playing
percussion, but by
playing the piano. His
love for the piano
remained a common thread
in his musical career.
For example, he played
numerous gigs as a
pianist with his jazz
quartet ‘Just
Friends, consisting of a
number of top musicians
who are his friends. In
addition he started
composing piano works in
2012.
