From
the call of the open seas
to the wistful dance
section, this piece will
open the imagination of
your students and
audiences. Â Very
playable by young bands,
the piece features a
short opening ostinato
that develops into a tone
cluster and leads to
the ominous sounds of the
brass and percussion,
which depict the slow
lumbering ship on the
dangerous, open waters.
The piece continues
through a more lyrical
second section before a
dramatic return of the
opening material to close
out this contest/festival
style piece. From the
call of the open seas to
the wistful dance
section, this piece will
open the imagination of
your students and
audiences. Very playable
by young bands, the piece
features a short opening
ostinato that develops
into a tone cluster. This
leads to the ominous
sounds of the brass and
percussion, which depict
the slow lumbering ship
on the dangerous, open
waters. After a quickly
paced melody in the low
register for the
clarinets, the piece
gives way to an exciting
tutti section that
features horns and saxes
on an answering
countermelody.The second
section is a dance that
starts with low reeds and
a flute solo, but
develops into a full band
Spanish-sounding dance,
with melody in many
different places. The
recap is a reverse of the
beginning section and
again loosely represents
the danger of life on the
high seas.The short
ostinato that is used at
the beginning and in some
transitional moments is
based on the beginning
notes of Irish Tune from
County Derry, a favorite
of J. C. Sykes, who this
piece honors. Mr. Sykes
gave a lifetime to
teaching music to band
students in North
Carolina. The first four
notes in clarinet 1, the
first four in flute 1 and
the first four in
clarinet 2 make up the
first phrase from that
beautiful melody. Just
something to get students
thinking about
composition in a new
way.

Most
second-year bands have
some clarinet players who
are comfortable above the
break and others who are
not. By staying below the
break throughout, this
light and spirited
clarinet section feature
lets you give the entire
section a bit of the
limelight. It's a perfect
vehicle to help your
clarinet section learn to
shape a phrase, and the
cheerful melody lets you
program the piece
anywhere you like. It's
also a good selection to
use to take the pressure
off of the brass before a
particularly taxing major
work. Remind the
critically important
clarinet section that you
value their efforts as
much as any other
section. Breezy!

Every
one remembers the first
time that they saw a
snake. Though fascinating
to some and terrifying to
others, few animals are
as universally
mesmerizing. Composer
Tyler Arcari has crafted
a very fun piece making
use of auxiliary
percussion instruments to
emulate a snake's hiss or
ominous rattle. With very
strong and interesting
melodic material, and
scored to make a
developing band sound
great, this piece is sure
to be a favorite among
students. Everyone
remembers the first time
that they saw a snake.
The majority of people
have a base fear of them,
while others have a
“heebie-jeebiesâ
experience. We all
know how the great
explorer Dr. Indiana
Jones felt about snakes,
especially when he
famously fell into a
snake pit during Raiders
of the Lost Ark. However
you feel about snakes, a
pit of them certainly
sounds like an
adventure.About the
work:Snake Pit uses a lot
of auxiliary percussion
instruments. Some of
these sounds are intended
to subtly mimic the
sounds that snakes make.
The maraca in m. 4, of
course, is a
rattler’s call!
The Chinese cymbal is
intended to sound like
the “hiss†of
a not-so-friendly
serpent. The eighth-note
pattern at m. 9 is used
throughout as a
“creepyâ€
effect using dynamic
contrast so take care to
emphasize this when
present.I enjoy the gong
as a “colorâ€
instrument in the band. I
try to balance it with
the low brass. Take care
that at m. 42 the gong is
not “front-and
center†but more of
a support for the nice
accented chords in the
low brass. Also, the
trumpets can become
spaced too much here. The
accents are more for
emphasis and less
space.

opened in August 1855 by
the Englishmen Hudson,
Kennedy, and Smythe.
Today's most common route
to climb up, starting
from Saint-Gervais via
Aiguille du Gou ter
(3,863m), Do me du Gou
ter (4,304m), and Are te
des Bosses (4,547m), was
first used in 1861. Otto
M. Schwarz composed this
work inspired by
“the roof of
Europe†with its
luminous and huge
glaciers. Early in the
morning, mountain
climbers set off to the
peak; they witness the
sunrise, and experience
the hazards that the
journey up to the summit
brings along. A snowstorm
and falling rocks at Are
te des Bosses aggravate
their journey. A sudden
change of weather,
however, enables them to
reach the top after a
strenuous ascent. This
piece invites you to an
imaginary journey from
Saint-Gervais-les-Bains
via the “voie
royale†to the top
of Mont-Blanc.

Notes Elephant is, of
course, inspired by the
incredible mammals of the
same name. Their
column-like legs, long
trunks, and massive
presence will never cease
to amaze; however, it's
their trumpeting that
makes them stand out as
the instrumentalists of
the animal kingdom! In
this selection, an
elephant's slow gate and
general demeanor are
represented by a
methodical tempo and
lumbering texture.
Woodwinds will enjoy the
opportunity to perform
grace notes while
Elephant also offers
exposure to flams for
young percussionists.
At m. 33 the
trumpets and horns
recreate an elephant call
after slipping brown
paper bags, or lunch-bag
mutes, over their bells
(in their bells for horn
players). For the trumpet
players, the mutes can be
enhanced with an
additional balled-up
piece of paper placed at
the bottom of the bag
prior to slipping it over
the bell. Horns should
ball up the bag itself
and experiment with
placement to create the
most realistic tones
without stopping the
instrument. While
specific pitches are
noted, making the best
elephant sounds should
prioritized. Young
students always look
forward to experimenting
with mutes, and this
selection offers an
inexpensive and creative
way to do so at a young
age. Note to the
Conductor This piece can
be used to introduce or
reinforce the finer
points of staccato
playing. While many
students know to play
these notes short in
length, they may need
reminding that they
should also be played
lightly. This also may
allow for opportunities
in emphasizing
contrasting articulation
styles that are in this
piece. Younger students
will likely need a
reasonable amount of
practice in successfully
using the lunch-bag
mutes. Allowing
additional rehearsal time
for this is
recommended. Program

This
work is not only about
the flow of the Doubs,
Ranceuse, and Roide
rivers that converge at
Pont-de-Roide but also
about the flow of life
and history of this
French town. The
composition begins
festively and, after the
tempo picks up, the music
smoothly and rhythmically
depicts the happiness and
enthusiasm of the
inhabitants. The
ever-flowing waters of
the rivers introduce the
slow, melodic middle
section, which suddenly

return to sounds of
happiness and enthusiasm,
the work closes
majestically.

Nordanvind
is a tour de force
symphonic rhapsody that
is built on three
Scandinavian folk songs.
Composer Carl Strommen
has composed these
Viking-influenced
melodies into a concert
setting that brings out
all of the history of the
Scandinavian people. The
piece is at times bold
and aggressive, at other
times beautiful. Carl
employs all of the
instrumental colors of
the concert band to
create a new work for
more advanced
ensembles. Modern
Scandinavians are
descendants of the
Vikings, an adventuresome
people who were known for
their love of the sea,
their naval prowess, and
as fierce fighters . The
Scandinavian Vikings were
warriors from Denmark,
Norway, and Sweden who
traded, raided and
settled in various parts
of Europe, Russia, the
North Atlantic islands,
and the northeastern
coast of North America
.Starting around 1850,
over one million Swedes
left their homeland for
the United States in
search of religious
freedom and open farm
land . Augustana College
was founded in 1860 by
graduates of Swedish
universities and is
located on the
Mississippi River in Rock
Island, Illinois . Home
of the
“Vikings,â€
Augustana College is the
oldest Swedish- American
institution of higher
learning in the United
States . This powerful
and lively piece takes
inspiration from Swedish
history and from Swedish
folk songs and hymns
.Havsdrake (Dragon of the
Sea)The Nordanvind or
“North Windâ€
blows a cold wind during
a journey of a group of
courageous Viking rowers
. The
“Dragon-shipâ€
or long ships designed
for raiding and war was a
sophisticated, fast ship
able to navigate in very
shallow water . To
musically portray these
magnificent seafaring
vessels, the director is
encouraged to use an
Ocean Drum (or a rain
stick) during the
introduction . Wind
players may consider
blowing air through their
instruments to suggest
the North wind . Adding
men’s voices to
accompany the haunting
low brass and percussive
“rowerâ€
sounds can be helpful in
creating the dark and
ominous portrayal of
Viking adventurers
.Slangpolska efter Byss -
KalleIn Sweden, a
“polska†is a
partner dance where the
dancers spin each other
(släng in Swedish
“to sling or

Slangpolska efter Byss -
Kalle is attributed to
Byss-Kalle, who was a
notable Swedish folk
musician, specifically a
nyckelharpa player .
Slangpolska efter Byss -
Kalle is a traditional
“polskaâ€
dance song most often
played on the Nyckelharpa
or keyed fiddle and is
commonly heard in pubs
and at festive events
throughout Sweden .
Approximately 10,000
nyckelharpa players live
in Sweden today, and the
Swedish and the American
Nyckelharpa Associations
are dedicated to this
Swedish National
instrument . The director
is encouraged to share
video and audio examples
of the nyckelharpa
playing the original
Slangpolska efter Byss -
Kalle .Tryggare Kan Ingen
Vara (Children of the
Heavenly Father)Tryggare
Kan Ingen Vara Is a
traditional Swedish
melody, possibly of
German roots, and was
believed to be arranged
as a hymn by the Swedish
hymn writer, Karolina
Wilhelmina Sandell-Berg
(1832–1903) . As a
daughter of a Swedish
Lutheran minister, she
began writing poems as a
teenager and is said to
have written over 1,700
different texts . There
are two different
accounts as to the
inspiration for this hymn
. The first story is that
Lina (as she was called)
wrote the hymn to honor
her father and to say
thank you to him for
raising her and
protecting her . A second
belief is of her
witnessing the tragic
death of her father . She
and her father were on a
boat, when a wave threw
her father overboard . It
was said that the
profound effect of
watching her father drown
is what caused Lina to
write the text to this
hymn . Although this is a
treasured song to people
of Swedish descent
everywhere, it speaks to
all people about a father
tending and nourishing
his children, and
protecting them from evil

Rainb
ow in the Clouds is
based on an old
traditional spiritual,
possibly an
African-American song
from the 19th century,
entitled God Put a
Rainbow in the
Clouds. Composer
Carol Brittin Chambers
was inspired by poetic
Maya Angelou to create of
setting of this beautiful
song. It is lush and
beautiful throughout and
will highlight the
musicianship of your
students. This would
serve as a welcome change
of pace piece on your
program for concert or
contest. Rainbow in
the Clouds was
commissioned by the
Pflugerville Middle
School Wind Ensemble in
Pflugerville, Texas,
directed by Shauna
Satrom. The piece
premiered in May 2017, in
memory and celebration of
Luis Ham, who was an
Assistant Principal at
Pflugerville Middle
School.This piece is
based on an old
traditional spiritual,
possibly an
African-American song
from the nineteenth
century, entitled God Put
a Rainbow in the Clouds.
The first time I heard
reference to this song
was in a Maya Angelou
video, in which she sings
a portion of it:
“When it looked
like the sun
wouldn’t shine
anymore, Oh, God put a
rainbow in the
clouds.†In the
video, Dr. Angelou honors
those who have
demonstrated kindness to
her in the past, and she
suggests that we all try
to be a blessing to
others. The Pflugerville
community believed that
Mr. Ham, with his
positive outlook, was
definitely a
“rainbow in the
clouds†for other
people.The piece begins
with a full ensemble
introduction, followed by
a woodwind treatment of
the first verse with a
fairly reserved tempo and
straight eighth-note
rhythm. When brass pick
up the melody on the
second phrase, we start
to hear the song more
like the original
spiritual, with
dotted-eighth, sixteenth
rhythms. The middle
section of the piece at
m. 22 begins to move at a
slightly quicker tempo,
and the mood becomes
lighter. This section
becomes a
call-and-response between
a euphonium solo and
upper woodwinds. The
final section of the
piece involves everyone
playing together joyously
and full, eventually
winding down with two
more solo statements in
flute and euphonium.Note

piece to introduce or
reinforce the following
