This
seven-minute SATB setting
of a section of the 1640
text from the Bay Psalm
Book takes wing like the
birds it first mentions.
What would normally be a
somber litany of
affliction is set to
music that hints at
eternal things and the
saving power of God. The
middle section “I
said, ‘In the
middle of my days, O my
God, do not take away
me†is set,
amazingly, in Latin,
which gives a wonderful
contrast to the more
lyrical beginning. The
beginning material
returns as the Latin text
is now sung in English,
concluding “Thy
years throughout all ages
are.†This music is
sublime and
transcendent.

John Van
Buren's Gloria was
composed in 1996 for the
Maulbronner Kammerchor,
which introduced this
work in Germany and on
tours to Russia and
Argentina. It has since
also been heard in Italy,
Holland and the USA. John
Van Buren writes about
his work: The beginning
of my Gloria is initially
very restrained, even
cautious. It is extremely
chromatic, the sound only
gradually opening out to
become a song of praise.
The work grows in a
steady crescendo until it
arrives at an 8-part
fortissimo sound (B
major). Finally, the
expression of great
vitality gives place to a
soprano melody which
floats calmly above the
choral sound, and the
work dies away
pianissimo.

This simple
text can be interpreted
in many ways. Some of the
themes mentioned included
personal growth and
passing away. The central
message that I intended
to communicate is that of
community, of the
necessity of relying on
each other to achieve our
dreams. There may be
times when we have to
“fly†on our
own, but ultimately our
greatest strength is born
of our unity. The djembe
player is encouraged to
embellish the given
rhythm per the idiom of
the instrument. Adding
additional percussion is
also encouraged.Â
Percussion part is for
djembe.

This
familiar Christmas carol
is given an ethereal
setting by Brian L.
Hanson. Supported by a
gentle, lilting
accompaniment, the
strains of 'Still, Still,
Still' interweave in both
the accompaniment and
choral parts. Soaring
vocal lines, rich
harmonies, and
imaginative text painting
point to the wonder and
mystery of Christmas.
In the bleak
midwinter,
Frosty wind
made
moan, Earth
stood hard as
iron, Water
like a
stone; Snow
had fallen, snow on
snow, Snow
on snow, In
the bleak midwinter,
Long
ago.
Heaven cannot hold
Him, Nor
earth
sustain; Hea
v'n and earth shall flee
away When He
comes to
reign; In
the bleak midwinter,
A stable
place
sufficed The
Lord God
Almighty, Je
sus Christ.
Still, still,
still, One
can hear the falling
snow. For
all is hushed, the world
is
sleeping, Ho
ly star its vigil
keeping. Sti
ll, still,
still, One
can hear the falling
snow.
What can I give
Him, Poor as
I am? If I
were a
shepherd, I
would bring a
lamb; If I
were a Wise
Man, I would
do my
part; Yet
what I can I give
Him— W
hat can I give
Him? Give my
heart.

Alex
Freeman's (b. 1972)
Cathedral of Spring for
chamber choir (2019) to
poems of e.e. cummings
and Robert Frost was
commissioned and
premiered by Somnium
Ensemble. The composer
tells: For the
celebration of the 10th
anniversary of Somnium
Ensemble (Finland), I was
commissioned to write a
piece with spring as a
central theme. While
contemplating that and
perusing appropriate
poetry, I was inspired by
memories of the
night-time sky in early
spring--the warm air, the
teeming, buzzing energy
of life all around, and
an expansive dome of
stars overhead. I then
imagined that moment in
time as a kind of sacred
space; this is the point
where the cathedral
notion came to mind. The
frenetic and joyous
poetry of e.e. cummings,
from his Epithalamion,
gives an exclamatory
introduction to the set,
followed by his vision of
spring from the point of
view of giddy children in
his iconic poem, [in
Just-]. We then take a
moment to contemplate the
ephemerality of all this
beauty (spring giveth and
spring taketh away, i.e.
an offertorium of sorts);
Robert Frost's
Blue-Butterfly Day places
us in a moment where, by
chance, we find ourselves
enveloped by a delicately
fluttering swarm of
butterflies. Peaceful and
still, yet in constant
flux, we spend a some
time taking that
phenomenon in, while also
experiencing a twinge of
the realisation that this
is truly fleeting. The
final movement, returning
to a later stanza from
Epithalamion, cummings's
sparkling paean to May is
set as a kind of final
anthem..
