Par JARRELL MICHAEL. La série des 'Assonances' de Michael Jarrell représente comme les 'Sequenze' de Berio l'idée de cycle, bien qu'elles ne soient pas forcément écrites pour instrument seul. Le compositeur les considère comme ses 'cahiers d'esquisses', 'comme un droit: celui de me concentrer sur une idée et de m'y sentir libre'*. Assonance pour clarinette solo - créé le 22 août 1984 à l'Aspen Festival (Colorado) par Nicholas Cox - est la première de cette série, elle illustre parfaitement l'idée exprimée par le compositeur. On ressent la limitation des moyens musicaux, bien que la virtuosité instrumentale ne soit quant à elle pas vraiment limitée... Michael Jarrell part de quelques éléments de base, telle cette première cellule que l'on va retrouver (au même titre que les autres éléments initiaux) sous différentes présentations: à un tempo plus lent, avec des trilles et des notes intercalées régulièrement ou encore sous la forme d'une reprise variée, très peu de temps avant la fin de l'oeuvre. L'ensemble de la pièce repose sur un réseau très précis de relations entre différents éléments musicaux relevant soit de phénomènes difficilement perceptibles consciemment (comme les précédents), soit, au contraire, de sections bien distinctes les unes des autres que l'auditeur perçoit facilement de par leurs relations d'opposition, de contraste ou de complémentarité. Le retour varié du début fait finalement place à une coda essentiellement fondée sur la dimension polyphonique de l'instrument, qui était sous-jacente depuis le début. L'oeuvre présenta ainsi deux 'parcours' simultanés: l'un, plutôt circulaire, qui revient finalement aux éléments du début après avoir suivi une certaine trajectoire, l'autre qui fait aboutir une idée musicale (la polyphonie) développée régulièrement et progressivement. Assonance illustre bien l'idée de son titre - une forme de rime ancestrale -, mais sa richesse, sa rigueur et sa poésie vont bien au-delà d'un procédé ! Dans Assonance, pour clarinette (1983), Jarrell, à la manière des Sequenza de Luciano Berio, écrit des états instrumentaux qui laissent supposer qu'une seule clarinette suffit à en dévoiler plusieurs. Parti comme souvent d'un motif aux contours sériels, il décline, comme des planches d'architecte ou des esquisses de peintre - idée gouvernant toute la série des Assonances -, des situations amorcées mais jamais terminées où alternent une vision du son qui transite par la virtuosité de l'instrumentiste et une sophistication de l'écriture, plus proche d'une rhétorique de l'ornementation que d'une syntaxe. Mais au lieu d'expérimenter, comme Berio dans la Sequenza pour clarinette, toutes les ressources de l'instrument, Michael Jarrell travaille avec ses virtualités, sans nous montrer ses fonctionnements, occupant l'espace de la partition en se laissant guider par la contrainte du dessin à inventer pour que la clarinette sonne au-delà de sa reconnaissance effective. Jarrell restreint le projet musical il se fixe des règles. En revanche, il multiplie les difficultés techniques, estimant qu'il est inutile de proposer de nouveaux effets si les musiciens ne peuvent les réaliser. L'utopie du timbre s'arrête là où commencent les contraintes de l'instrumentiste. A ce titre, il mélange les catégories: le précis et l'imprécis, le décisif et l'indécis, le fiable et le douteux. Michael Jarrell insiste sur le fait qu'il existe, par exemple, deux genres de sons multiphoniques: ceux entre parenthèses à caractère imprécis, ceux sans parenthèse qu'il faut jouer avec une grande exactitude. La question du même et du différent trouve avec le timbre un écho particulièrement éloquent. Si un mode de jeu, un énoncé rythmique ou une cellule mélodique peuvent signifier tout à la fois une volonté sonore et son contraire, c'est que la syntaxe qui charpente cette esthétique du simulacre est à la fois souple et rigoureuse, intuitive et cérébrale, improvisée et écrite, harmonique et sérielle, etc. Assonance pour clarinette seule est une pièce emblématique, elle représente en raccourci ce mélange de contraintes et de libertés où se façonne l'oeuvre de Jarrell.
