Washed up on
the Phaeacian shore after
a shipwreck, Odysseus is
introduced to King
Alcinous. As he sits in
the palace, he tells the
Phaeacians of his
wanderings since leaving
Troy. Odysseus and his
men fi rst landed on the
island of the Cicones
wherethey sacked the city
of Ismarus. From there,
great storms swept them
to the land of the
hospitable Lotus Eaters.
Then they sailed to the
land of the Cyclopes.
Odysseus and twelve of
his men entered the cave
of Polyphemus. After the
single-eyed giantmade
handfuls of his men into
meals, Odysseus fi nally
defeated him. He got him
drunk and once he had
fallen asleep, he and his
men stabbed a glowing
spike into the
Cyclop’s single
eye, completely blinding
him. They escaped by
clinging to the belliesof
some sheep. Once aboard,
Odysseus taunted the
Cyclop by revealing him
his true identity.
Enraged, Polyphemus
hurled rocks at the ship,
trying to sink it. After
leaving the
Cyclopes’ island,
they arrived at the home
of Aeolus, ruler of the
winds.Aeolus off ered
Odysseus a bag trapping
all the strong winds
within except one - the
one which would take him
straight back to Ithaca.
As the ship came within
sight of Ithaca, the
crewmen, curious about
the bag, decided to open
it. The winds escapedand
stirred up a storm.
Odysseus and his crew
came to the land of the
cannibalistic
Laestrygonians, who sank
all but one of the ships.
The survivors went next
to Aeaea, the island of
the witch-goddess Circe.
Odysseus sent out a
scouting party butCirce
turned them into pigs.
With the help of an
antidote the god Hermes
had given him, Odysseus
managed to overpower the
goddess and forced her to
change his men back to
human form. When it was
time for Odysseus to
leave, Circe told him to
sail tothe realm of the
dead to speak with the
spirit of the seer
Tiresias. One
day’s sailing took
them to the land of the
Cimmerians. There, he
performed sacrifi ces to
attract the souls of the
dead. Tiresias told him
what would happen to him
next. He thengot to talk
with his mother,
Anticleia, and met the
spirits of Agamemnon,
Achilles, Patroclus,
Antilochus, Ajax and
others. He then saw the
souls of the damned
Tityos, Tantalus, and
Sisyphus. Odysseus soon
found himself mobbed by
souls. He
becamefrightened, ran
back to his ship, and
sailed away. While back
at Aeaea, Circe told him
about the dangers he
would have to face on his
way back home. She
advised him to avoid
hearing the song of the
Sirens; but if he really
felt he had to hear,
thenhe should be tied to
the mast of the ship,
which he did. Odysseus
then successfully steered
his crew past Charybdis
(a violent whirlpool) and
Scylla (a multiple-headed
monster), but Scylla
managed to devour six of
his men. Finally,
Odysseus and hissurviving
crew approached the
island where the Sun god
kept sacred cattle.
Odysseus wanted to sail
past, but the crewmen
persuaded him to let them
rest there. Odysseus
passed Circe’s
counsel on to his men.
Once he had fallen
asleep, his men
impiouslykilled and ate
some of the cattle. When
the Sun god found out, he
asked Zeus to punish
them. Shortly after they
set sail from the island,
Zeus destroyed the ship
and all the men died
except for Odysseus.
After ten days, Odysseus
was washed up on

er an die Küste der

Sting’s
song about an Englishman
who lives in New York but
still sees himself as an
outsider became a huge
hit for the
singer-songwriter and has
gone on to be a true
classic. The central
message ‘Be
yourself, no matter what
they say’ is as
timeless and universal as
the melody of the song,
which in Roland
Kernen’s wind band
arrangement is sure to
delight your audience.
De Britse
singer-songwriter Sting
scoorde met dit lied over
een Engelsman die in New
York steeds een
vreemdeling is gebleven,
een grote hit, die
inmiddels een evergreen
is geworden. De boodschap
erachter ‘Blijf
jezelf, wat ze ook
zeggen’ is net zo
tijdloos en universeel
als de melodie, die in
deze blaasorkestversie
van Roland Kernen
uitstekend tot haar recht
komt.
Dem
britischen Sänger und
Songwriter Sting gelang
mit Lied über einen
Engländer, der in New
York stets ein Fremdling
belieben wird, ein
großer Hit, der
mittlerweile zum
Evergreen geworden ist.
Die zentrale Botschaft:
Bleib du selbst, egal,
was sie sagen“ ist
jedoch so zeitlos und
universal wie auch die
Melodie des Liedes, das
in Roland Kernens
Blasorchesterversion bei
jedem Publikum gut
ankommen wird.
In
questa canzone il
cantante e compositore
inglese Sting racconta la
storia di un inglese
eccentrico che arriva a
New York. Il messaggio
centrale « siate voi
stessi, non importa
ciò che gli altri
dicono », resta
attuale e universale,
così come
l’indimenticabile
melodia di questa
splendida canzone.

Sting’s
song about an Englishman
who lives in New York but
still sees himself as an
outsider became a huge
hit for the
singer-songwriter and has
gone on to be a true
classic. The central
message ‘Be
yourself, no matter what
they say’ is as
timeless and universal as
the melody of the song,
which in Roland
Kernen’s wind band
arrangement is sure to
delight your audience.
De Britse
singer-songwriter Sting
scoorde met dit lied over
een Engelsman die in New
York steeds een
vreemdeling is gebleven,
een grote hit, die
inmiddels een evergreen
is geworden. De boodschap
erachter ‘Blijf
jezelf, wat ze ook
zeggen’ is net zo
tijdloos en universeel
als de melodie, die in
deze blaasorkestversie
van Roland Kernen
uitstekend tot haar recht
komt.
Dem
britischen Sänger und
Songwriter Sting gelang
mit Lied über einen
Engländer, der in New
York stets ein Fremdling
belieben wird, ein
großer Hit, der
mittlerweile zum
Evergreen geworden ist.
Die zentrale Botschaft:
Bleib du selbst, egal,
was sie sagen“ ist
jedoch so zeitlos und
universal wie auch die
Melodie des Liedes, das
in Roland Kernens
Blasorchesterversion bei
jedem Publikum gut
ankommen wird.
In
questa canzone il
cantante e compositore
inglese Sting racconta la
storia di un inglese
eccentrico che arriva a
New York. Il messaggio
centrale « siate voi
stessi, non importa
ciò che gli altri
dicono », resta
attuale e universale,
così come
l’indimenticabile
melodia di questa
splendida canzone.

Following a
celebrated series of wind
ensemble tone poems about
national parks in the
American West, Dan
Welcher’s Upriver
celebrates the Lewis &
Clark Expedition from the
Missouri River to
Oregon’s Columbia
Gorge, following the
Louisiana Purchase of
1803. Welcher’s
imaginative textures and
inventiveness are freshly
modern, evoking our
American heritage,
including references to
Shenandoah and other folk
songs known to have been
sung on the expedition.
For advanced players.
Duration:
14’. In 1803,
President Thomas
Jefferson sent Meriwether
Lewis and William
Clark’s Corps of
Discovery to find a water
route to the Pacific and
explore the uncharted
West. He believed woolly
mammoths, erupting
volcanoes, and mountains
of pure salt awaited
them. What they found was
no less mind-boggling:
some 300 species unknown
to science, nearly 50
Indian tribes, and the
Rockies.Ihave been a
student of the Lewis and
Clark expedition, which
Thomas Jefferson called
the “Voyage of
Discovery,†for as
long as I can remember.
This astonishing journey,
lasting more than
two-and-a-half years,
began and ended in St.
Louis, Missouri —
and took the travelers up
more than a few rivers in
their quest to find the
Northwest Passage to the
Pacific Ocean. In an age
without speedy
communication, this was
akin to space travel out
of radio range in our own
time: no one knew if,
indeed, the party had
even survived the voyage
for more than a year.
Most of them were
soldiers. A few were
French-Canadian voyageurs
— hired trappers
and explorers, who were
fluent in French (spoken
extensively in the
region, due to earlier
explorers from France)
and in some of the Indian
languages they might
encounter. One of the
voyageurs, a man named
Pierre Cruzatte, also
happened to be a
better-than-average
fiddle player. In many
respects, the travelers
were completely on their
own for supplies and
survival, yet,
incredibly, only one of
them died during the
voyage. Jefferson had
outfitted them with food,
weapons, medicine, and
clothing — and
along with other
trinkets, a box of 200
jaw harps to be used in
trading with the Indians.
Their trip was long,
perilous to the point of
near catastrophe, and
arduous. The dream of a
Northwest Passage proved
ephemeral, but the
northwestern quarter of
the continent had finally
been explored, mapped,
and described to an
anxious world. When the
party returned to St.
Louis in 1806, and with
the Louisiana Purchase
now part of the United
States, they were greeted
as national heroes.Ihave
written a sizeable number
of works for wind
ensemble that draw their
inspiration from the
monumental spaces found
in the American West.
Four of them (Arches, The
Yellowstone Fires,
Glacier, and Zion) take
their names, and in large
part their being, from
actual national parks in
Utah, Wyoming, and
Montana. But Upriver,
although it found its
voice (and its finale) in
the magnificent Columbia
Gorge in Oregon, is about
a much larger region.
This piece, like its
brother works about the
national parks,
doesn’t try to
tell a story. Instead, it
captures the flavor of a
certain time, and of a
grand adventure. Cast in
one continuous movement
and lasting close to
fourteen minutes, the
piece falls into several
subsections, each with
its own heading: The
Dream (in which
Jefferson’s vision
of a vast expanse of
western land is opened);
The Promise, a chorale
that re-appears several
times in the course of
the piece and represents
the seriousness of the
presidential mission; The
River; The Voyageurs; The
River II ; Death and
Disappointment; Return to
the Voyage; and The River
III .The music includes
several quoted melodies,
one of which is familiar
to everyone as the
ultimate “river
song,†and which
becomes the
through-stream of the
work. All of the quoted
tunes were either sung by
the men on the voyage, or
played by
Cruzatte’s fiddle.
From various journals and
diaries, we know the men
found enjoyment and
solace in music, and
almost every night
encampment had at least a
bit of music in it. In
addition to Cruzatte,
there were two other
members of the party who
played the fiddle, and
others made do with
singing, or playing upon
sticks, bones, the
ever-present jaw harps,
and boat horns. From
Lewis’ journals, I
found all the tunes used
in Upriver: Shenandoah
(still popular after more
than 200 years),
V’la bon vent,
Soldier’s Joy,
Johnny Has Gone for a
Soldier, Come Ye Sinners
Poor and Needy (a hymn
sung to the tune
“Beech
Springâ€) and
Fisher’s Hornpipe.
The work follows an
emotional journey: not
necessarily step-by-step
with the Voyage of
Discovery heroes, but a
kind of grand arch.
Beginning in the mists of
history and myth,
traversing peaks and
valleys both real and
emotional (and a solemn
funeral scene), finding
help from native people,
and recalling their zeal
upon finding the one
great river that will, in
fact, take them to the
Pacific. When the men
finally roar through the
Columbia Gorge in their
boats (a feat that even
the Indians had not
attempted), the
magnificent river
combines its theme with
the chorale of
Jefferson’s
Promise. The Dream is
fulfilled: not quite the
one Jefferson had
imagined (there is no
navigable water passage
from the Missouri to the
Pacific), but the dream
of a continental
destiny.

Max Steiner was born in
Vienna in 1888, and grew
up surrounded by music.
He was a student of the
Imperial Academy of
Music, having among his
teachers Gustav Mahler.
In 1936 he signed an
agreement with Warner.
Steiner, considered the
father of symphonic music
in Hollywood style. One
of his most famous and
popular masterworks is,
without any doubt, Gone
with the Wind (1939). The
movie was an immediate
success and won ten
Academy Awards. In spite
of the years passed, this
movie still moves young
audiences around the
world. Lorenzo Bocci has
chosen the song Tara?s
Theme from this movie and
turned the romantic music
into an arrangement for
concert band.
Vom Winde verweht ist
einer der Filme, der
heute noch Generationen
vor dem Fernseher
vereint. Oft gezeigt,
wird jeder doch immer
wieder mitgerissen von
der tragischen
Liebesgeschichte inmitten
der Kriegswirren. Einen
nicht unwichtigen Anteil
an der bewegenden
Atmosphäre des
Filmklassikers hat die
großartige Musik von Max
Steiner, der als Urvater
der sinfonischen
Filmmusik im
Hollywoodstil gilt und
neben Vom Winde verweht
noch zahlreiche weitere
erfolgreiche Filme
vertonte. Lorenzo Bocci
wählte aus der Musik
Tara's Theme und
bearbeitete die
romantische Musik zu
einem Arrangement für

This piece
attempts to portray
atmospheric pictures
through music. The
opening section evokes
the somewhat misty and
hazy early morning
atmosphere surrounding
the ancient monument.
When the band reaches its
first dynamic climax itis
as if the massive
boulders are audible,
even touchable through
the use of minor 3rd
chords. The main theme,
constructed on the notes
CAFBG, symbolises the
arrangement of the
central boulders in the
shape of a horseshoe,
whichforms the focal
point of this huge
collection of stones.
Towards the end of the
work you will experience
a fantastic effect when
five soloists play a five
part hymn whilst other
members of the band
create a special
atmosphere byimitating a
choir of monks and
druids. A fantastic major
new concert work for
advanced

In The
Essence of Youth the
composer gives an insight
into childhood and youth
— inspired by his
own daughter. The opening
of sparking rhythms,
dynamic contrasts and
changes of time signature
paint a vivid picture of
the unpredictability of
children. The first and
second movements recount
the love — and also
tension and the worries
— in the
adult-child bond, through
dissonant harmonies but
also pretty melodies. The
fugue-like ending leads
to a final splendid
chorale: a picture of
proud parents with their
child!
In The
Essence of Youth
geeft de componist zijn
visie op de kindertijd en
de jeugd. Zijn eigen
dochter vormde hierbij
een belangrijke
inspiratiebron. De
opening staat met
opgewekte ritmes,
dynamische contrasten en
maatsoortwisselingenvoor
de spontaniteit van
kinderen. Het eerste en
tweede deel vertellen
over de liefde, zorg en
toewijding die horen bij
een ouder-kindrelatie.
Met dissonante
harmonieën, maar ook
met mooie melodieën
weet de componist
ditprachtig te
verbeelden. Een fuga
leidt ten slotte naar een
prachtig koraal: de
trotse ouders met hun
kind
verbeeldend.
In
The Essence of
Youth beschreibt der
Komponist sein Bild von
Kindheit und Jugend -
inspiriert von seiner
eigenen Tochter. Die
Eröffnung steht mit
aufgeweckten Rhythmen,
dynamischen Kontrasten,
Taktartwechseln für
die Unberechenbarkeit von
Kindern. Der erste und
zweite Satz erzählen
mit dissonanten
Harmonien, aber auch mit
schönen Melodien von
Spannungen, Liebe und
Sorge in der
Eltern-Kind-Beziehung.
Den Schluss bildet eine
Fuge, die zu einem
prachtvollen Choral
führt: ein Bild
stolzer Eltern mit ihrem
Kind!
The Essence of
Youth è un brano
che riflette ciò che
il compositore, ispirato
da sua figlia, considera
come le caratteristiche
tipiche della
gioventù.
Un’ouverture
spettacolare nella quale
contrasti dinamici e dai
ritmi vivaci si
susseguono come a
simboleggiare la
straordinaria energia dei
bambini. Il primo
movimento, sulla scia
dell’introduzione,
anticipa una parte di
solo che accompagna al
secondo movimento,
testimonianza
dell’amore
infinito dei genitori nei
confronti dei figli. Una
fuga basata sul tema
iniziale contraddistingue
il terzo movimento che
conduce
all’apoteosi
finale.
