the Roman god of
financial gain, commerce,
travelers, boundaries,
luck, trickery,
merchants, and thieves. A
popular deity in Roman
culture, he was instantly
recognized by his unique
winged shoes (talaria)
and hat (petasos). With
its close proximity to
the sun and faster orbit
than all other planets,
the Romans named this
small celestial body
after the swift-winged
messenger of their
culture. It is not
surprising that in
Holst's major orchestral
suite The Planets that
Mercury utilizes such
light and swift themes.
There is some duality to
the title of the work.
Part of it involves my
impression of what a
playful chase of the
winged messenger sounds
like. The other part is
the opening motif chasing
two themes of Holst
around the rest of the
work. It was only after
developing the first few
ideas that I recognized
some of the commonalities
with some of those same
themes from Holst's
orchestral work. There
are several quotations
from that famous piece by
Holst (notably as both
are stated successively
at mm. 13-20). The idea
of someone having to
chase the Winged
Messenger struck me as a
unique title around which
to craft a work. One of
my core beliefs about
music is that it can be
imbued with meaning by a
composer, and as the
sonic story unfolds an
ensemble, director, and
audience members can draw
out their own meaning
from the experience. Who
exactly is chasing
Mercury? I leave that up
to the wonderfully
creative minds of the
young ladies and
gentlemen who have the
opportunity to bring this
work to life. The
opportunity to compose
music and allow student
musicians to give this
piece new life and draw
out different meanings is
a humbling experience.
Rehearsal Notes and
Suggestions As stated
earlier, the opening
motif (a range of a
seventh) comes back
frequently in the work in
a variety of settings and
textures. Throughout the
work, it is important for
students to recognize the
two themes from Holst
when they are present in
the sound canvas. If the
solos (clarinet and alto
saxophone) are utilized,
the supporting parts
around and underneath
those lines must be
sensitive and play in
such a way to properly
balance those parts.
There are number of muted
sections for the trumpet
section, and I would
advocate for all trumpets
acquiring the same mute
to contribute to unity in
timbre. The bold fanfare
sections (the first
occurs at m. 37) must be
presented with a unified
articulation style. As
the texture intensifies
prior to m. 169, it is
crucial for the ensemble
to play within themselves
and exercise musical
courtesy to allow all
voices to be heard as
they arrive at m. 181. My
thanks in advance for
your support of this
music, and I wish you

In his poem Mending Wall,

indeed!As the always
tricky Frost well knew:A
wall may be the strong

wall may be the mural
upon which we inscribe
the art and the history
of our people.A wall may
the sacred, embroidered
fabric that keeps us from
the cold.A wall may be
the skin of our lovers
and the dearest ones we
treasure.And so, the
barriers and walls
between us may be, at
last, paradoxically, the
special place where we as
neighbors meet together,
if only to repair those
walls and build them up
again.But walls and
barriers must also have a
passage through them or
what lies within and
without them will surely
starve and
die.“Mending

English-German-French-Dut
ch. Offenbach (1819
- 1880), who was born in
Germany, moved to Paris
when he was a teenage boy
and remained there for
much of his life. He
became especially famous
as a composer of numerous
operettas. and of one
famous opera: Les
Contes
d’Hoffmann
(The Tales of Hoffmann).
His operettas (or
‘musiquettesâ€
) were often based on
comical, or satirical
librettos. He makes fun
of Parisian daily life,
dignitaries, the
military, the
pretentiousness of the
Grand Opéra, and so
on. In that respect,
Offenbach’s
operettas are not really
comparable with those of
his German-speaking
contemporaries, for
example, Franz Lehár
and Johann Strauss the
Younger. Musically
speaking, we could
callOffenbach’s
operettas lively, funny,
melodious and catchy.For
La Belle
Hélène,
Offenbach drew from Greek
mythology. The story is
based on that of Helen of
Troy, but is set in
France, halfway through
the 19th century; it has
been turned into a satire
on the élite of that
time.The overture to
La Belle
Hélène was (and
still is) very
successful. Offenbach
combined a number of
arias and choruses from
the operetta to give a
taste of what is to
follow. Many overtures
which follow this form
lack unity and structure.
However, in this case the
composition has been well
thought-out.
Offenbach
(1819-1880), Duitser van
geboorte, verhuisde als
jongeman naar Parijs,
waar hij een groot deel
van zijn leven verbleef.
Hij werd vooral beroemd
als componist van
talrijke operettes en een
beroemde opera: Les
Contes
d’Hoffmann.
Zijn operettes (of
‘musiquettesâ€
) zijn qua libretto vaak
komisch en hilarisch, ja
zelfs satirisch. Hij
steekt hierin de draak
met het Parijse mondaine
leven, met
hoogwaardigheidsbekleders
, met militairen, met de
bombast van de Grand
Opéra, enzovoort. In
dat opzicht zijn
Offenbachs operettes
nauwelijks te vergelijken
met die in Duitsland van
bijvoorbeeld Franz
Lehár en Johann
Strauss jr. Muzikaal
gezien kunnen we zijn
operettes
levendig,geestig,
melodieus en goed in het
gehoor liggend
noemen.Voor La Belle
Hélène putte
Offenbach uit de Griekse
mythologie. Het verhaal
draait om Helena van
Troje, maar is verplaatst
naar Frankrijk,
halverwege de negentiende
eeuw; het is uitgewerkt
tot een satire op de
heersende elite.De
ouverture van La Belle
Hélène was (en
is nog altijd) zeer
succesvol. Offenbach
heeft hierin een aantal
aria’s en koren
uit de operette
samengevoegd - een
voorproefje dus op wat
komen gaat. Veel
ouvertures die zo zijn
gemaakt, missen eenheid
en structuur. In dit
geval is er echter sprake
van een goed doordachte
opbouw.
Der
gebürtige Deutsche
Jacques Offenbach
(1819-1880) zog im
Jugendalter nach Paris,
wo er den größten
Teil seines Lebens
verbrachte. Bekannt wurde
er vor allem als
Komponist zahlreicher
Operetten und einer
berühmten Oper: Les
Contes
d’Hoffmann
(Hoffmanns
Erzählungen). Seine
Operetten (oder
Musiquettes“)
basierte er häufig auf
komischen oder gar
satirischen Libretti.
Darin wird das mondäne
Pariser Leben karikiert
mit seinen
Würdenträgern,
Militärs, dem Pomp der
Grand Opéra und
dergleichen mehr. In
dieser Hinsicht sind
Offenbachs Operetten
vergleichbar mit den
deutschen Werken eines
Franz Lehár oder
Johann Strauss (Sohn).
Musikalisch betrachtet
können Offenbachs
Operetten alslebendig,
amüsant, melodiös
und eingängig
beschrieben werden.
Für La Belle
Hélène bediente
sich Offenbach der
griechischen Mythologie.
Die Handlung beruht auf
Helena von Troja, wurde
aber ins Frankreich der
Mitte des 19.
Jahrhunderts versetzt und
in eine Satire auf die
damals herrschende Elite
verwandelt.Die
Ouvertüre von La
Belle Hélène
war und ist sehr
erfolgreich. Offenbach
kombinierte darin eine
Reihe von Arien und
Chorstellen aus der
Operette und lieferte so
quasi einen Vorgeschmack
auf das Folgende. Vielen
auf diese Weise
entstandene Ouvertüren
mangelt es an
Einheitlichkeit und
Struktur. Diese
Ouvertüre zeugt jedoch
von einem gut
durchdachten Aufbau.

qu’il passe la
plus grande partie de sa

particulièrement
célèbre pour la
composition de nombreuses
opérettes et
d’un opéra
légendaire, Les
Contes
d’Hoffmann.
Ses opéras-bouffes (ou
« musiquettes »)
s’inspirent
souvent de livrets
comiques ou satiriques.
Il parodie la vie
quotidienne Paris, se
moque des dignitaires, de
l’armée, de la

suite. cet égard, les
œuvres
d’Offenbach ne
sont pas vraiment
comparables aux
opérettes de ses
contemporains

entraînants,
spirituels, mélodieux

légendes grecques des
plus illustres, cette
opérette se veut
être une satire sur
l’élite de
l’époque.Lâ€
™ouverture de La
Belle Hélène a
toujours été
très populaire.
Offenbach y glisse
plusieurs arias et
chœurs repris
ensuite dans l’un
ou l’autre acte de

afin d’en offrir
un avant-go t

nombreux compositeurs
écrivirent par la

Latin. Among
Haydn's over thirty
settings of the Latin
Ordinary, the Missa in
honorem Sanctae Ursula
occupies an outstanding
position, which,
according to the
autograph, was completed
on 5 August 1793. This
Mass has been referred to
as the most Mozartian of
all his masses. With its
song-like melodic
character, the unity of
the motivic material and
the harmonius balance
between festive and
reflective sections this
Mass is one of Haydn's
most successful and
inspired works. This
work, which in addition
to the usual Salzburg
church trio includes two
trumpets and timpani,
belongs to the category
of Missa solemnis. The
popular nickname
Chiemsee-Messe is bound
up with the history of
the origins of the work.
Haydn wrote the Mass for
the musically gifted nun,
Sebastiana Oswald, who
belonged to the
Benedictine cloister of
Frauenchiemsee. This work
soon found widespread
acceptance beyond the
originally intended
sphere of its origins, as
is indicated by the
numerous copies found in
Austrian convents. Score

Michael Haydn's masses
are associated either
with a specific
commission or with the
composition's dedicatee.
Thus, Haydn composed the
Missa in honorem Sti.
Gotthardi, also known as
the Admont Mass, for the
Admont Abbey located in
the region of Styria,
Austria, where Gotthard
Kuglmayr was the Abbot.
The mass combines formal
concentration with
liturgical function. The
songlike melody, the
unity of the motivic
material, and the
balanced harmony of
solemn and lyrical
passages show how
intensively Haydn
concerned himself with
the genre. Due to its
length and its
orchestration the mass
can be considered a type
of missa solemnis. Fugues
and fugal movements are
completely missing from
the Missa Admontis as is
any kind of contrapuntal
(including imitative)
composition. In so doing,
Haydn assured that the
required understanding of
the liturgical text would

Sonata 7, in D major,
Balicourt opens with a
suave, intricately
rhythmic Adagio. The
following Presto, with
its delightful interplay
between flute and bass,
including both octave
doubling and stretto
imitation, is the most
skittish movement to
emerge from the
composer’s pen.
The finale is a
‘sandwich’
movement, in which a
Minuetto encloses a
duple-metre Cantabile in
D minor. Although the
minuet could be said to
exemplify one of those
‘easy’
movements referred to in
Balicourt’s
prospectus for
subscribers, its complex,
prescribed ornamentation
requires sensitive
handling. Sonata 8, in E
minor, is strategically
placed as the final work
in the set, being one of
the longest as well as
the most conservative;
adopting the traditional
four-movement
configuration, it
continually harks back to
the grand Handelian
style. An eloquent
Andante ushers in a
Presto containing many,
slightly academic,
contrapuntal touches and
much chromaticism. The
subsequent Largo is only
five bars long: its plain
melodic line in minims
and crotchets is the
skeleton around which the
flautist is expected to
weave an elaborate
embroidery. For the
finale Balicourt
introduces, in effect, a
new version, in triple
metre, of the second
movement. The fact that
all four movements are in
E minor heightens the
sense of unity, which is
expressed very concretely
through their sharing of
some thematic
material. $22.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 4 to 6 weeks

brance was written in
November 2018. In
remembrance of what it
took for us to be here...
was the only original
program note. The piece
can mean different things
to different people;
however, it brings unity
to all under the theme of
remembrance. We fight for
many things: love,
patriotism, freedom,
ideology,
possession...all of which
have cost tremendous
sacrifice. It was the
battles, the blood and
sweat, and the sacrifice
of those that came before
us that created the world
as we know it.
Remembrance is a tender,
melancholic reflection
that silently gives
thanks to every step and
every sacrifice that was
made to bring us what we
have today. Yes, what we
have may not be
perfect--nor is it
anywhere near
complete--but with each
generation's
responsibility to carry
the torch and never
forget, hopefully we can
make everything worth it.
Performance Notes This
tender piece is an
excellent opportunity to
explore nuanced phrasing.
While many sections may
play similar parts, often
the phrasing and dynamics
are marked differently
across the band. Each of
these discrepancies
should be brought out and
add to the perpetual
motion of the piece.
Encourage confident, yet
subtle entrances and
furthermore, think about
the ends of notes as
important as the
beginning. Really bring
out the hairpins in
sections such as m. 29,
m. 67, and m. 81 as
expressive devices.
Despite the piece's major
key, through the various
levels of dissonance and
tension, both the
ensemble and the audience
should feel the
sacrifices and tragedy
that this piece
celebrates. The tempo
should not be much slower
than the marked tempos
and with the careful
observation of the
various tempo changes,
there should be a
constant momentum pushing
throughout the piece, all
the way past the end that
leaves the audience in
thought with an
uplifting, pensive, and
gentle clarinet
chord. Remembrance was
written in November 2018.

sacrifices and tragedy
that this piece
celebrates. The tempo
should not be much slower
than the marked tempos
and with the careful
observation of the
various tempo changes,
there should be a
constant momentum pushing
throughout the piece, all
the way past the end that
leaves the audience in
thought with an
uplifting, pensive, and
gentle clarinet
chord. Remembrance was
written in November 2018.
“In remembrance of
what it took for us to be
here...†was the
only original program
note. The piece can mean
different things to
different people;
however, it brings unity
to all under the theme of
remembrance.We fight for
many things: love,
patriotism, freedom,
ideology,
possession...all of which
have cost tremendous
sacrifice. It was the
battles, the blood and
sweat, and the sacrifice
of those that came before
us that created the world
as we know it.
Remembrance is a tender,
melancholic reflection
that silently gives
thanks to every step and
every sacrifice that was
made to bring us what we
have today. Yes, what we
have may not be
perfect—nor is it
anywhere near
complete—but with
each generation’s
responsibility to carry
the torch and never
forget, hopefully we can
make everything worth
it.Performance NotesThis
tender piece is an
excellent opportunity to
explore nuanced phrasing.
While many sections may
play similar parts, often
the phrasing and dynamics
are marked differently
across the band. Each of
these discrepancies
should be brought out and
add to the perpetual
motion of the piece.
Encourage confident, yet
subtle entrances and
furthermore, think about
the ends of notes as
important as the
beginning. Really bring
out the hairpins in
sections such as m. 29,
m. 67, and m. 81 as
expressive devices.
Despite the
piece’s major key,
through the various
levels of dissonance and
tension, both the
ensemble and the audience
should feel the
sacrifices and tragedy
that this piece
celebrates.The tempo
should not be much slower
than the marked tempos
and with the careful
observation of the
various tempo changes,
there should be a
constant momentum pushing
throughout the piece, all
the way past the end that
leaves the audience in
thought with an
uplifting, pensive, and
gentle clarinet
chord. $13.00 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 1 to 2 weeks
