quartet is laid out in a
three-movement structure,
with each movement based
on an early, middle, and
late work of the great
American impressionist
painter Mary Cassatt.
Although the movements
are separate, with
full-stop endings, the
music is connected by a
common scale-form,
derived from the name
MARY CASSATT, and by a
recurring theme that
introduces all three
movements. I see this
theme as Mary's Theme, a
personality that stays
intact while undergoing
gradual change. I
The Bacchante (1876)
[Pennsylvania Academy of
Fine Arts, Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania] The
painting shows a young
girl of Italian or
Spanish origin, playing a
small pair of cymbals.
Since Cassatt was trying
very hard to fit in at
the French Academy at the
time, she painted a lot
of these subjects, which
were considered typical
and universal. The style
of the painting doesn't
yet show Cassatt's
originality, except
perhaps for certain
details in the face.
Accordingly the music for
this movement is
Spanish/Italian, in a
similar period-style but
using the musical
signature described
above. The music begins
with Mary's Theme,
ruminative and slow, then
abruptly changes to an
alla Spagnola-type fast
3/4 - 6/8 meter. It
evokes the
Spanish-influenced music
of Ravel and Falla.
Midway through,
there's an accompanied
recitative for the viola,
which figures large in
this particular movement,
then back to a truncated
recapitulation of the
fast music. The overall
feeling is of a
well-made, rather
conventional movement in
a contemporary
Spanish/Italian style.
Cassatt's painting, too,
is rather conventional.
II At the Opera
(1880) [Museum of Fine

This painting is one of
Cassatt's most well known
works, and it hangs in
the Museum of Fine Arts
in Boston. The painting
shows a woman alone in a
box at the opera house,
completely dressed
(including gloves) and
looking through opera
glasses at someone or
something that is NOT on
the stage. Across the
auditorium from her, but
exactly at eye level, is
a gentleman with opera
glasses intently watching
her - though it is not
him that she's looking
at. It's an intriguing
picture. This
movement is far less
conventional than the
first movement, as the
painting is far less
conventional. The music
begins with a rapid,
Shostakovich-type
mini-overture lasting
less than a minute, based
on Mary's Theme. My
conjecture is that the
woman in the painting has
arrived late to the
opera, busily stumbling
into her box. What
happens next is a kind of
collage, a kind of
surrealistic overlaying
of two different
elements: the foreground
music, at first is a
direct quotation of
Soldier's Chorus from
Gounod's FAUST (an opera
Cassatt would certainly
have heard in the
brand-new Paris Opera
House at that time),
played by Violin II,
Viola, and Cello. This
music is played sul
ponticello in the melody
and col legno in the
marching accompaniment.
On top of this, the first
violin hovers at first on
a high harmonic, then
descends into a slow
melody, completely
separate from the Gounod.
It's as if the woman in
the painting is hearing
the opera onstage but is
not really interested in
it. Then the cello joins
the first violin in a
kind of love-duet (just
the two of them, at
first). This music isn't
at all Gounod-derived;
it's entirely from the

self-assured and not in
the least demure. It is
eight minutes long, and
is all about melody -
three melodies, to be
exact (Young Woman,
Green, and Sunlight). No
angst, no choppy rhythms,
just ever-unfolding
melody and lush
harmonies. I quote one
other French composer
here, too: Debussy's song
Green, from Ariettes
Oubliees. 1909 would have
been Debussy's heyday in
Paris, and it makes
perfect sense musically
as well as visually to do
this. Mary Cassatt
lived her last several
years in near-total
blindness, and as she
lost visual acuity, her
work became less sharply
defined - something akin
to late water lilies of
Monet, who suffered
similar vision loss. My
idea of making this
movement entirely melodic
was compounded by having
each of the three
melodies appear twice,
once in a pure form, and
the second time in a more
diffuse setting. This
makes an interesting two
ways form:

front of my piano and
started to work on this
piece, my hands seemed to

play these first two
chords, which set the
process in motion of
composing the
piece. After the somber
opening, the piece shifts
to a whimsical theme that
I hope brings about happy
thoughts of Linda and her
personality. It was also
my intent, however, to
include some musical
dissonance in the theme
that still reflected the
bittersweet loss at the
same time. The piece
develops into a secondary
theme that is a quasi
inversion of the main

Luggage], which had been
premiered in 1937 with
music by Darius Milhaud,
was reprised on 1 April
1944 at the Thé tre de
la Michodière; Francis
Poulenc was asked to
compose new stage music.
Theentire unpublished
score lay undiscovered
until Bérengère de
l’Épine, a
librarian at the
Bibliothèque
Historique de la Ville de
Paris, announced the
existence of a manuscript
in the Association de la
Régie Thé trale
collection.Poulenc
finalised the score
between 19 and 21 March
1944. It contains nine
songs, all written for a
small instrumental
ensemble including oboe,
clarinet, cello and
piano. However, at the
end of the manuscript,
the composer echoes the
second song Lent
[Slow] and creates
another version for cello
and piano; curiously, the
original version of the
song has not been erased
in the manuscript.
Poulenc seems to suggest
that we consider the
piece for cello and
piano, that we have
publishedhere, as a
different piece of music.

Wednesday 23 January 2013
by Marc Coppey,
accompanied by
Jean-François Heisser,
in the organ auditorium
of the Conservatoire
National Supérieur de
Musique et Danse de Paris
(CNSMDP), during
thesymposium for the
fiftieth anniversary of
Poulenc’s
death.Given in a dramatic
context, some elements
allow us to get an idea
of the character of the
piece, which Benoît
Seringe, Poulenc’s
beneficiary, judiciously
chose to name
Souvenirs.The main
character of
Anouilh’s play,
Gaston, is suffering from
amnesia at the end of
World War One. Several
families try to claim
him; they want him to be
their missing relative.
The Renaud family prove
to be particularly
stubborn, but Gaston
doesnot recognize himself
in the child and young
man they depict: a
ruthless and violent
person. In Act 1 Scene 3,
left alone for a moment,
overwhelmed by the story
of the “old
Gaston†that is
gradually coming to
light, and outraged by
the desire ofthose around
him to appropriate him
(to the detriment of the
person he would like to
be from now on), he
whispers these words:
“You all have
proof, photographs that
look like me, memories as
clear as day…
I’ve listened to
you all and it’s
slowlycausing a hybrid
person to rise up in me;
a person in which there
is a piece of each of
your sons and nothing of
me.†Poulenc chose
to place the second piece
from his stage music
score as these words are
spoken.He borrowed part
of the material, as he
often did, from an
earlier composition. In
this particular case, the
beginning is a recycled
version of the
“slow and
melancholicâ€
section from
L’Histoire de
Babar , composed
between 1940 and 1945,
andpremiered in 1946
(unless it is Babar
that reuses the
musical idea from
Voyageur ).The
eponymous elephant
decides to leave in
search of the great
forest. He embraces the
old lady, promises her he
will return and reassures
her that he will never
forget her. Left alone,
the old lady, feeling sad
and pensive, wonders when
she’ll seeher
friend Babar again. The
situation is similar to
that in Voyageur sans
bagage: solitude,
sadness, a distressing
and introspective time,
fear of oblivion, the
presence of
memories…

emprunte une composition
antérieure une part de
son matériau. Dans ce
cas précis, il
réutilise pour le
début du morceau la
section « Lent et
mélancolique » de
l’Histoire de
Babar, composée entre
1940 et 1945, créée
en1946 ( moins que ce ne
soit Babar qui
réutilise
l’idée musicale
du Voyageur). Le

s’est décidé
partir pour retrouver la

important pieces of music
to gain some glimpse into
the mind of the composer
by understanding the
times in which a piece
was written. The times
that brought this piece
into being, 2020, has
been a year like no other
in our lifetimes.With the
suffering of a once in a
century pandemic raging
in ever higher waves, and
millions of people around
the world confined to
their homes with a shared
attention span for the
first time in
generations, we watched
in horror the 8 minute 46
second killing of George
Floyd, a man previously
unknown to us, but now
unwillingly joining a
long list of names of
unarmed African Americans
killed by police. The
anguished backlash of
citizens around the
world, from Japan to New
Zealand to Germany to the
United States, of every
age, color, and creed,
has rallied for weeks and
months on end to demand
enough and that
“Black Lives
Matter.â€And yet, in
the midst of it all is an
America starkly divided
against itself with some
defiantly pushing back,
emboldened by
authoritarian-style
government actions
against its own citizens
occurring all over the
country. It is against
this backdrop that we
ever had a chance to know
of Elijah McClain. Here
in quarantine I sometimes
practice my scales in
front of the news. And
one day the mirror image
looking back at me from
the screen was a slight
young man, warm, affable
brown eyes, and also a
violin under his chin.
The newsreel-style camera
pan so familiar now, I
knew the only reason we
were gazing upon his
unfamous face was that he
too had been killed by
police nearly a year
before. But the
revelation of it in the
broadcast hit me
particularly hard.Ellen
Taaffe Zwilich, who is
not only one of the great
composers of our time, is
also a dear friend, and
called me the next day,
also deeply saddened by
the news. It was from
Ellen that I learned that
Elijah used to play for
the kittens at the local
animal shelter so they
wouldn’t be
lonely. This kind, gentle
soul was aggressively
taken into police custody
while saying, “I am
an introvert. Please
respect the boundaries
that I am speaking...
I’m going
home.†He was never
seen alive again.Ellen
and I spoke of the
sadness and the injustice
of this several times.
She felt a powerful
calling to contribute
something in a statement
and the result is the
piece you now hold in
your hands. I am deeply
honored to be the
dedicatee of the piece,
to have worked together
with Ellen on some of the
final details, and to pen
this score note. As an
invited alumna of the
Eastman School of Music,
I premiered the work for
their virtual event on
Diversity and Inclusion.
Each time I play it,
there is a persistent
lump in my throat because
Ellen has captured
something poignant and
powerful here.There are
great works which give
voice to important
moments for generations,
and this is one of them.

demonstration named the
Baltic Way also
known as the Baltic
Chain— was held in
the Baltic states of
Estonia, Latvia and
Lithuania by its citizens
in a call for
independence from the
Soviet Union. On 23rd
August 1989, some two
million participants
formed a human chain,
hand-in-hand all the way
from the Estonian capital
of Tallinn its Latvian
counterpart, Riga,
through to the Lithuanian
capital of Vilnius - six
hundred kilometres long.
It became the longest
human chain ever created
and turned out to be the
final push needed for
much sought-after
independence. This
historic event became the
source of inspiration for
this composition. The
introduction of thefirst
movement, ‘Struggle
for Independence’,
is based on a nocturne
for piano by the renowned
Lithuanian composer and
painter Mikalojus
Konstantinas iurlionis
(1875-1911), thematic
material from which has
been incorporated
throughout the whole
composition. The
melancholic beginning is
followed by a powerful
theme which reflects the
resolve of the Baltic
people. The sudden
aggressive, dissonant
chords and a dominant
and—in rhythmic
terms—contrary
bass drum announce that
the resistance is not
going smoothly. Just for
a moment, we hear the
anthem of the Soviet
Union in the lower brass,
but this is relentlessly
pushed to the background
by the rest of the band
playing the Lithuanian
national anthem,
‘Tautiška giesm
’ (Lithuania, our
homeland). The second
movement, ‘Decades
of Suffering’,
echoes life under the
Soviet Union's thumb. In
the pursuit of
independence, a peaceful
protest is planned in
which a human chain is
formed across the Baltic
states of Estonia, Latvia
and Lithuania. This
‘Chain of
Freedom’ is
depicted in the final
movement of the work.

demonstration named the
Baltic Way also
known as the Baltic
Chain— was held in
the Baltic states of
Estonia, Latvia and
Lithuania by its citizens
in a call for
independence from the
Soviet Union. On 23rd
August 1989, some two
million participants
formed a human chain,
hand-in-hand all the way
from the Estonian capital
of Tallinn its Latvian
counterpart, Riga,
through to the Lithuanian
capital of Vilnius - six
hundred kilometres long.
It became the longest
human chain ever created
and turned out to be the
final push needed for
much sought-after
independence. This
historic event became the
source of inspiration for
this composition. The
introduction of thefirst
movement, ‘Struggle
for Independence’,
is based on a nocturne
for piano by the renowned
Lithuanian composer and
painter Mikalojus
Konstantinas iurlionis
(1875-1911), thematic
material from which has
been incorporated
throughout the whole
composition. The
melancholic beginning is
followed by a powerful
theme which reflects the
resolve of the Baltic
people. The sudden
aggressive, dissonant
chords and a dominant
and—in rhythmic
terms—contrary
bass drum announce that
the resistance is not
going smoothly. Just for
a moment, we hear the
anthem of the Soviet
Union in the lower brass,
but this is relentlessly
pushed to the background
by the rest of the band
playing the Lithuanian
national anthem,
‘Tautiška giesm
’ (Lithuania, our
homeland). The second
movement, ‘Decades
of Suffering’,
echoes life under the
Soviet Union's thumb. In
the pursuit of
independence, a peaceful
protest is planned in
which a human chain is
formed across the Baltic
states of Estonia, Latvia
and Lithuania. This
‘Chain of
Freedom’ is
depicted in the final
movement of the work.
De Baltische Weg
(The Baltic Way)
was een demonstratie van
de bevolking van de
Baltische staten die in
1989 plaatsvond als een
roep om onafhankelijkheid

war 1989 eine
Demonstration von

zur Unabhängigkeit von
der Sowjetunion. Am 23.
August 1989 bildeten rund

awardee of two Guggenheim
fellowships, Julia Perry
studied composition with
Luigi Dallapiccola and
Nadia Boulanger, and
conducted her works on a
tour throughout Europe
with the Vienna
Philharmonic and the BBC
Orchestra. She would
become one of the first
African-American female
composers to have an
orchestral work performed
by the New York
Philharmonic. Although
she had an auspicious and
promising career in her
early life, it was
tragically cut short by a
series of strokes leading
to partial paralysis and
eventually, her death, at
age 55 in
1979.Perry’s
catalog is widely varied,
featuring thirteen
symphonies, numerous
chamber and solo works,
pieces for band, choral
and vocal music, and four
operas. Her Violin
Concerto, completed in
1968, shows the influence
of Dallapiccola’s
teachings: sharp harmonic
dissonances organized
around specific pitch
centers, short repetitive
patterns that establish
significant musical
materials, and
contrapuntal textures.
Her fastidious
performance markings in
the solo violin part
indicate her profound
understanding of the
instrument. Angular,
muscled, and sparkling by
turns, this piece is a
sophisticated entry to
the serious violinist's
concert repertoire.There
is no evidence or
documentation that the
Violin Concerto was ever
premiered or performed
during her lifetime,
despite the fact that the
composer prepared a full
score, piano reduction
and orchestral parts.
Regrettably, this is the
case with the majority of
her works composed in the
final decade of her
life. What is
extraordinary about Julia
Perry’s musical
career was the
astonishing success she
attained in her early
years. In her youth she
studied piano, voice,
violin and cello. She
began to compose in her
teenage years, her first
publication being a
choral work in 1947 by
Carl Fischer. Her Stabat
Mater was published in
1951 and would become one
of her most often
performed pieces, with
performances in Europe
and the United States. In
1953 she was awarded a
Guggenheim fellowship to
study with the Italian
composer Luigi
Dallapiccola, first at
the Berkshire Music
Center in Tanglewood,
later in Florence, Italy.
During this time, she
also pursued studies with
Nadia Boulanger in Paris
and was awarded a second
Guggenheim fellowship.
She studied conducting at
this time, touring Europe
in 1957 to conduct her
own works with the Vienna
Philharmonic and the BBC
Orchestra. During her
European sojourns, she
learned and mastered
French, German and
Italian. She would become
one of the first
African-American female
composers to have an
orchestral work performed
by the New York
Philharmonic.Perryâ€
s circumstances would
change dramatically once
she reached forty years
of age, having returned
permanently to the United
States. At some point in
the spring of 1970, she
suffered the first of two
strokes that would
paralyze her right side
and confine her to a
wheelchair for the rest
of her life. Nonetheless,
she continued to compose
and to promote her works
with publishers and
conductors. A second
stroke contributed to her
death in 1979 at age 55.
She likely endured harsh
ethnic and gender
discrimination in the
course of her career, and
her later years would
witness a period of
extreme civil unrest.
These matters and the
significance of music in
her life are undoubtedly
what led her to say,
“Music has a great
role to play in
establishing the
brotherhood of
man.â€Perry’s
catalog is widely varied,
featuring thirteen

organized around three
alternating tempos: Slow
(Å’ = 60), Moderate
(Å’ = 84) and Fast
(Å’ = 120). The
opening thirty-measure
cadenza for the solo
violin introduces most of
the thematic material for
the piece. The
orchestration commonly
features antiphonal
writing between
orchestral groups, for
example, strings
alternating with brass,
or strings alternating
with winds. The harp and
piano generally appear as
solo instruments, rather
than as members of the
orchestra. Her fastidious
performance markings in
the solo violin part
indicate her profound
understanding of the
instrument.There is no
