THREE
MYSTERIES OF NAGASAKI was
inspired by the eerie
darkness and ambiguous
bells of the oldest
Western church in Japan.
Dorff’s program
note describes
impressions of his visit
to Nagasaki while
withholding any
explanation of the three
movements. The 13-minute
work is a duo for violin
and one percussionist,
with an array of pitched
and unpitched ringing
metallic instruments plus
bass drum. THREE
MYSTERIES OF NAGASAKI was
inspired by the ambiguous
bells of the oldest
Western church in
Japan.In an island nation
that used to thrive on
isolation from the rest
of the world, Nagasaki
has long been a
vulnerable exception.
From the 16th through
19th centuries, it was
Japan’s only
international port, open
to Portuguese and Dutch
traders. From this sole
crossroads, Christianity
(along with European
food, flowers, and
language) began flowing
into the otherwise
insular culture. The US
Navy’s presence in
the 1800s added to
Nagasaki being
Japan’s exposed
Achilles’ heel,
which may be why
Puccini’s Madama
Butterfly is set in this
city, with
Cho-Cho-San’s
vulnerability symbolizing
the risk of openness to
Western
influence.I’ve had
occasion to visit
Nagasaki, and have never
felt so haunted. Aside
from the unspeakable
atrocity of 1945 and the
lasting presence of that
horror, there also
remains a mysterious air
of not really being in
pure Japan, or in the
present day. Nowhere was
this more obvious than
within the ÅŒura
Basilica, the earliest
Christian church built in
Japan. Decades after
visiting the basilica, I
still recall its oddly
distorted and slowly
pealing bells, and
timeless incense floating
in relative darkness. The
mysterious bells have
stayed with me both for
their own sonority, and
as a subconscious
reminder of everything
Nagasaki is and
was.Composed for a
violinist-percussionist
couple who ended a
decades-long relationship
just as I completed the
work (and never
performing it), it was
originally called simply
THREE MYSTERIES; I
couldn’t make a
direct reference in the
title because it felt too
raw. Looking back years
later, the updated title
THREE MYSTERIES OF
NAGASAKI seems to ask
more questions than it
answers.

was written as a
commission from Senzoku
Gakuen, one of the most
renowned conservatories
in Japan. Jan Van der
Roost has imbued it with
such a broad palette of
ensemble colours that it
puts the entire range of
instruments of the
orchestra in the
spotlight. The ostinato
element, which
characterises each of the
three movements in this
work, is sure to catch
the ear of any audience.

he was in elementary
school. Around Christmas
time every year in
Ichikawa City, seven
Chiba high school bands
hold a joint concert. For
the 20th anniversary the
composer was asked to
write a piece to be
performed to close the
concert. This piece was
first performed in 2010
by Tadashi Yoshida,
conductor and close
friend of Satoshi
Yagisawa, with a combined
wind orchestra from Chiba

2011 was a
disastrous year for
Japan: on March 11 the
northeast of the country
suffered a violent
earthquake, which
triggered a huge tsunami
and caused massive damage
to people and the
environment. The ensuing
problems with the nuclear
reactor at Fukushima only
increased the misery: a
black day in the
country’s
history…One almost
inevitable consequence of
such dramatic
circumstances is the
particular damage
suffered by the cultural
arts. And so it was in
Japan: various high
school wind orchestras in
the effected areas lost
their practice rooms
and/or instruments. It
will take a long time
before the damage
suffered is
repaired—and it
will take great effort to
overcome thepsychological
effects, too. Focusing on
the latter, Yutada
Nishida (director of The
Bandwagon radio program)
asked a few composers for
a simple work that could
be played by many
orchestras. It just so
happened that the Osakan
Philharmonic Winds (with
whom Jan Van der Roost
had conducted a concert
exclusively of his own
works on September 25th)
had had a similar idea.
This concert saw the
baptism of Song of Hope.
This piece immediately
struck a chord with
musicians and audience
alike: it begins bleakly
in the low register and
evolves to a more open,
optimistic close. There
really is hope for better
times!

devastante terremoto e al

gravi problemi al
reattore nucleare di

della cultura in
generale, e quello della
musica in particolare
hanno sofferto
immensamente a causa di
questi nefasti eventi
naturali. Song of
Hope è un brano
che ha profondamente
commosso esecutori e
pubblico.Song of
Hope inizia nel
registro acuto con suoni
oscuri e melanconici, ma
si sviluppa in un clima
di ottimismo, come a
voler simboleggiare un
futuro più sereno.

Tucci, Daniel Perantoni,
David Fedderly, Roger
Rocco, Markus Hotzel,
Alessandro Fossi, Kyle
Turner, Toby Hanks, and
Alan Baer. He also
studied with Roger Bobo
upon his move to
Japan. In 2001, he
won 1st prize in the
brass division of the
Great Wall International
Music Competition held by
the Chinese Music
Association. He plays
regularly with numerous
organizations including
Kyoto Symphony Orchestra,
Kyoto International Music
Festival Orchestra, Kyoto
Philharmonic Chamber
Orchestra, Japan Century
Symphony Orchestra, Izumi
Sinfonietta, Osaka
Municipal Symphonic Band,
and others. He was
selected as tubist of
Asian Youth Orchestra
where he performed from
2004~2007. He has been a
guest artist at ITECs in
2010, 2012 and 2014, and
also performed at
Tubamania 2013 (Bangkok)
and NERTEC 2013 and 2015
(Ithaca College). In
addition to his
performance work, he
conducts bands ranging
from the elementary level
to community
groups. He served as
instructor of tuba and
ensemble at Osaka College
of Music, and now, he is
freelance player, famous
clinician, arranger for
tuba ensemble and
translator for brass
musician who come to
Japan.

Wakakusa
Hill ligt ten oosten van
Nara in Japan en dankt
zijn naam aan het jonge
gras
(‘wakakusa’
betekent ‘jong
gras’). Aan de
voet van de heuvel zijn
beroemde tempels en
heiligdommen te vinden,
waaronder de Todai-tempel
en het Kasuga-altaar.De
heuvel is jaarlijks het
toneel van het
‘Yamayaki’-e
venement in de vijftiende
nacht van januari. Voor
deze gelegenheid maakt
men van de heuvel een
enorm vuurspektakel, de
vlammen van de vele
fakkels verlichten dande
nachtelijke hemel van
Nara.

Pacific
Dreams describes the
experience of Miguel, a
traveling composer from
Spain who, feeling
somewhat alienated from
his homeland, is
wandering through an area
of Sydney known as The
Rocks. At a small outdoor
market in a typical
street of this
oldcolonial
neighbourhood, he
discovers a print of
William DeShazos painting
Pacific Dreams Portrayed
in the painting is the
surf of one of the exotic
islands in the Pacific.
Next, with the impressive
Sydney Harbour Bridge
looming over the
narrowstreets of The
Rocks, he envisions
sultry Pacific beaches.
Suddenly a theme he once
composed about the lakes
in Japan comes to him. Is
it the Asian influences
present in cosmopolitan
Sydney that bring this
theme to mind? Or perhaps
the waters aroundSydney,
over which he could sail
to Tahiti? He is
uncertain. Could this
same theme be used to
create a new composition
about his feelings for
the metropolis Sydney?
How then to work his
Pacific Dreams into the
mix? Miguel is certainly
no fan ofHawaiian music.
Mayby he could use the
vocabularies of islands
like Hawaii and Tahiti,
their beautiful vowel
combinations being sung
ad libitum by a mixed
choir.With these ideas
and his newly purchased
print of Pacific Dreams,
he boards the Metroat
Circular Quay. He has a
final glimpse of the
harbour and the Sydney
Opera House as the train
races into the ground. On
to the hotel! To work! He
must compose!Maestoso :
Miguel is impressed as he
gazes upon the Sydney
Harbour Bridge. And yet,
hewants to go away from
this city. Away, to an
exotic island in the
Pacific.Steady Rock : In
the Rocks, musicians are
playing at a square.
Miguel basks in the
atmosphere but at the
same time he is
fantasizing about Hawaii
and Tahiti.Andante
Lamentoso :In his hotel
room, Miguel is feeling
sad and lonely in this
big city. He takes
comfort in his Pacific
Dreams.Allegro : Miguel
boards the boat that
takes him from Darling
Harbour to Circular Quay.
In his mind he is
traveling on to Hawaii.
Or is ithome, where the
bolero is playing? He is
pulled back to reality by
the skyline of
Sydney.
Wir

Call of
the Aboriginals Uluru -
Kata Tjuta was
commissioned by Nara
Municipal Ichijo Senior
High School Symphonic
Band, Nara City, Nara
Prefecture, Japan, to
commemorate their 60th
anniversary. Uluru, also
known as Ayers Rock, is
an immense monolith
rising in the vastness of
the Australian outback.
Famously also known as
Ayers Rock, it is listed
by UNESCO as a World
Heritage Site. It is a
sacred site for the
Aboriginal people of the
area, the Pitjantjatjara
Anangu, but has also
become a popular tourist
destination, creating
cultural and
environmental conflicts.
This work, which is
written in a style
typical of the composer,
tells a dramatic tale
adventure inspired bythe
life of the indigenous
people and the
magnificent scenery of
Uluru. This work is
suited for contests as
well as thematic
concerts.
Call

Sparkling
Brass was
commissioned by Osaka
Concert Brass, one of
Japan’s top brass
bands, and premiered by
them on 27th December
2018 during a concert
which celebrated their
10th Anniversary. The
work opens in lively mood
with fanfare-style
figures from the lower
band which are answered
by the cornets. This
interplay intensifies
until the mood calms
suddenly to introduce a
chorale which leads to a
duet-cadenza for cornet
and euphonium. The
rhythmic mood of the
opening soon returns and
leads to the main theme
of the work, a modal
caccia which
features various section
of the band. A short
bridge passage leads to a
change of key and a new
cantabile theme
which isintroduced by
euphoniums and baritone.
This is taken up by the
full band after another
change of key and leads
back to the caccia
theme. A transformed
version of the opening
fanfare returns to close
the work.
Sparkling
Brass werd geschreven
in opdracht van Osaka
Concert Brass voor een
concert ter gelegenheid
van het tienjarig bestaan
van die band. Het werk
opent in een levendige
sfeer, met fanfareachtige
motieven in het lage
koper, beantwoord door de
kornetten. Dit samenspel
wordt intenser tot de
sfeer plotseling rustiger
wordt en er een koraal
naar voren komt dat leidt

Brass wurde von Osaka
Concert Brass, einer der
führenden japanischen
Brass Bands, in Auftrag
gegeben und bei einem
Konzert zum
10-jährigen
Jubiläum
uraufgeführt. Das Werk

Tonartwechsel wird es von
der gesamten Brass Band
übernommen und
führt wieder zum
Caccia-Thema zurück.
Zum Schluss des Werkes
erklingt noch einmal eine
veränderte Version der
Eröffnungsfanfare.

De 35 km
lange Yamanobe no
Michi (weg aan de
voet van een berg) is de
oudste weg van Japan,
waarlangs ook de oudste
marktplaatsen en
handelslocaties te vinden
zijn. Deze indrukwekkende
en inspirerende
concertmars
weerspiegeltde huidige
bedrijvigheid langs de
Yamanobe no Michi,
evenals de eeuwenoude
geschiedenis die aan deze
weg verbonden
is.
Die 35 km
lange Yamanobe no Michi
('Strasse am Fuss eines
Berges') ist die alteste
Strasse Japans, entlang
derer die altesten Markte
und Handelsplatze aus

spiegelt die Aktivitaten

fanfare that could be
played as an opening
piece for any concert. It
will be perfect for

commissioned by Nara
Municipal Ichijo Senior
High School Symphonic
Band, Nara City, Nara
Prefecture, Japan, to
commemorate their 60th
anniversary. Uluru, also
known as Ayers Rock, is
an immense monolith
rising in the vastness of
the Australian outback.
Famously also known as
Ayers Rock, it is listed
by UNESCO as a World
Heritage Site. It is a
sacred site for the
Aboriginal people of the
area, the Pitjantjatjara
Anangu, but has also
become a popular tourist
destination, creating
cultural and
environmental conflicts.
This work, which is
written in a style
typical of the composer,
tells a dramatic tale
adventure inspired bythe
life of the indigenous
people and the
magnificent scenery of
Uluru. This work is
suited for contests as
well as thematic
concerts.

Brass was
commissioned by Osaka
Concert Brass, one of
Japan’s top brass
bands, and premiered by
them on 27th December
2018 during a concert
which celebrated their
10th Anniversary. The
work opens in lively mood
with fanfare-style
figures from the lower
band which are answered
by the cornets. This
interplay intensifies
until the mood calms
suddenly to introduce a
chorale which leads to a
duet-cadenza for cornet
and euphonium. The
rhythmic mood of the
opening soon returns and
leads to the main theme
of the work, a modal
caccia which
features various section
of the band. A short
bridge passage leads to a
change of key and a new
cantabile theme
which isintroduced by
euphoniums and baritone.
This is taken up by the
full band after another
change of key and leads
back to the caccia
theme. A transformed
version of the opening
fanfare returns to close
the work.

concert ter gelegenheid
van het tienjarig bestaan
van die band. Het werk
opent in een levendige
sfeer, met fanfareachtige

führt wieder zum
Caccia-Thema zurück.
Zum Schluss des Werkes
erklingt noch einmal eine
veränderte Version der
Eröffnungsfanfare.

Pacific Dreams
describes the experience
of Miguel, a traveling
composer from Spain who,
feeling somewhat
alienated from his
homeland, is wandering
through an area of Sydney
known as The Rocks. At a
small outdoor market in a
typical street of this
oldcolonial
neighbourhood, he
discovers a print of
William DeShazos painting
Pacific Dreams Portrayed
in the painting is the
surf of one of the exotic
islands in the Pacific.
Next, with the impressive
Sydney Harbour Bridge
looming over the
narrowstreets of The
Rocks, he envisions
sultry Pacific beaches.
Suddenly a theme he once
composed about the lakes
in Japan comes to him. Is
it the Asian influences
present in cosmopolitan
Sydney that bring this
theme to mind? Or perhaps
the waters aroundSydney,
over which he could sail
to Tahiti? He is
uncertain. Could this
same theme be used to
create a new composition
about his feelings for
the metropolis Sydney?
How then to work his
Pacific Dreams into the
mix? Miguel is certainly
no fan ofHawaiian music.
Mayby he could use the
vocabularies of islands
like Hawaii and Tahiti,
their beautiful vowel
combinations being sung
ad libitum by a mixed
choir.With these ideas
and his newly purchased
print of Pacific Dreams,
he boards the Metroat
Circular Quay. He has a
final glimpse of the
harbour and the Sydney
Opera House as the train
races into the ground. On
to the hotel! To work! He
must compose!Maestoso :
Miguel is impressed as he
gazes upon the Sydney
Harbour Bridge. And yet,
hewants to go away from
this city. Away, to an
exotic island in the
Pacific.Steady Rock : In
the Rocks, musicians are
playing at a square.
Miguel basks in the
atmosphere but at the
same time he is
fantasizing about Hawaii
and Tahiti.Andante
Lamentoso :In his hotel
room, Miguel is feeling
sad and lonely in this
big city. He takes
comfort in his Pacific
Dreams.Allegro : Miguel
boards the boat that
takes him from Darling
Harbour to Circular Quay.
In his mind he is
traveling on to Hawaii.
Or is ithome, where the
bolero is playing? He is
pulled back to reality by
the skyline of
Sydney.

composed specifically for
the 25th anniversary of
‘Brass-Aux-Saxesâ
™ in 2014,
coincidentally the 150th
anniversary of Adolphe
Sax, the inventor of the
saxophone. As a result,
Philip Sparke created
this work to pay homage
to Adolphe Sax. The work
is a series of variations
based on one original
theme and gives the
‘fanfare
orchestra’ a
unique and rare setting
you would usually only
find in Belgium, the
Netherlands and parts of
Japan. Consequently, this
shows all of the
different aspects of the
band through both colour
and
technique.

University, Saitama,
Japan and their
conductor, Yutaka
Nishida. The commission
marked the 50th year of
Yutaka Nishida’s
involvement with bands as
a player, conductor and
radio presenter. The
ceremonial Song of
Friendship opens with
an extended fanfare,
largely featuring the
brass section. This leads
to the main theme, which
develops slowly until it
is played by the full
band. A change of key
signals a contrasting
central section
containing a quiet
woodwind chorale, which
grows until the return of
the triumphant sounding
main theme. Elements of
the opening fanfare then
close the
work.

Kyoiku University.
“Kanreki†is
a special term used to
celebrate reaching the
age of 60 in Japan. The
composer was inspired by
some of Professor
Nakatsukasa’s
admirable characteristics
upon composing this work:
he speaks softly and at
the same level as his
students; he is
fashionable, stylish and
refined. The band
accompaniment is at a
moderate level of
difficulty, allowing the
solo flautist to choose
this work for many an
occasion.
