Invictus: A
Passion addresses one of
the world’s most
powerful stories through
the lens of the modern
world. The texts, written
or inspired by women,
describe not only human
suffering and persecution
but also the human
capacity for love and
humility in the face of
tyranny. Composer Howard
Goodall is uniquely
suited to bring these
texts to life with music
of emotional clarity and
sweeping force. This
movement, scored for
soprano solo, SATB choir
and piano, expresses the
unimaginable pain felt by
a mother seeing her child
torn away from her at a
slave auction. To this
harrowing account are
appended the words of
William Wilberforce,
spoken in the House of
Commons on 18th April
1791, “You may
choose to look the other
way but you can never say
again that you did not
know.†Duration

Since
the bassoon is my own
instrument, many people
have asked me why I've
written so little for the
instrument. Beyond my
early Concerto Da Camera
for bassoon and small
orchestra, written for
Leonard Sharrow in 1975,
I've not written a single
piece that features the
bassoon as a solo vehicle
(though I have written
three woodwind quintets).
When I first began
composing seriously,
critics were quick to
point out that my
orchestral writing
revealed nothing of my
roots as a woodwind
player--and bassoonists
asked why my pieces
didn't have more bassoon
solos. Perhaps I was so
aware that people were
looking at me as a
bassoonist/composer that
I was determined to
remove that stigma. Now
that my transformation
from performer to
composer is complete,
however, it's time to
re-address my instrument.
I wanted this new piece
to be serious rather than
whimsical. The Wind Won't
Listen represents my
return to the bassoon as
the highly expressive,
poetic soul that it is.
As such, it
shouldn't come as a
surprise that the piece
is based on a poem, and
that the title of the
piece as well as both its
movement titles come from
lines in that poem. I
first read Beth Gylys'
poem Split at the
MacDowell Colony in the
summer of 2001, and it
made a big impression on
me. My personal life had
been ruptured by divorce
in the preceding year.
This poem, with its dry
insistence on observation
rather than feeling,
expressed the wrung-out
state of my emotions at
the time better than any
I had seen. I set it to
music, as a song,
immediately. In this
format, for voice and
piano, I was able to put
a musical note to every
word of the poem. The
first lines of the poem,
Everyone I know is
crying, or should be
crying, became a melody
that haunted me even
without the words.
The work for bassoon and
string quartet is an
outgrowth of the song.
The first movement is
labeled Romanza, and has
a loose formal arch
structure of A-B-C-B-A,
with B and C being fast
sections framed by the
lamenting A music. In
addition to hearing the
bassoon's first notes
attached to the lines
Everyone I know is
crying, there's a sense
of agitation, of loss, of
longing, and at times of
desperation in the music.
At one point, the opening
theme from Tristan even
appears in the strings.
The second
movement follows, without
a real pause--the
pizzicato final chords of
the first movement
becoming the increasingly
aggressive opening chords
of the second. The
recitative is actually a
foreshadowing of the
basic theme that will be
varied, again to the
words of the song: Life
makes itself without us.
Don't let me tell you how
it is. Go out. Look. The
recitative begins in an
anguished state, but
subsides into more gentle
singing by the end, when
it simply falls into an
ostinato 5/8-3/4 pattern
to begin the variations.
Marked Very steady tempo;
Dancing, this set of
variations consists of
three dances, each faster
than the previous. The
first, in the
aforementioned 5/8-3/4
meter, gives way to a 3/8
scherzo, which in turn
takes on a furious 2/4
scurrying motion. The
music becomes breathless,
almost pulse-less, and an
ethereal theme appears in
the violins while the
rushing music continues,
sotto voce in the
bassoon. This new theme
is also from the song:
Why do I do this? The
wind won't listen. The
bassoon re-states its
Everyone I know is crying
melody from the first
movement, and at length
the 5/8-3/4 music
returns, more subdued
this time. The piece ends
on a major-minor chord,
suspended. The
Wind Won't Listen is
dedicated to the man who
commissioned it,
bassoonist Steven
Dibner--who shares my
passion for poetry and
language. --Dan
Welcher.

Bob
Moore has done it again!
If you have any of his
previous liturgical
meditations, suites,
preludes, or miniatures,
you’ll want to
fill out your collection
with this new set. These
five pieces for solo
instrument with piano
accompaniment have a
witting charm and
graceful elegance to
them. While they would be
highly useful during
various liturgical
moments or as background
music, instrumentalists
and pianists alike will
find them to be perfect
programmatic pieces to
keep nearby throughout
the year. Another
important feature is the
flexibility—the
repeats and endings
provided allow for
adaptation depending on
time constraints. A
separate instrument part
is included in the
collection, and a flute,
oboe, violin, or any C
instrument may be
used.

1. My Beautiful
Island (in the present) -
The character is that of
a young woman who sings
joyfully and exuberantly
of the beauty of her
island - a magnificent
paradise. 2. Oh Home of
Sweet Tranquility (20
years later) - The woman
is beginning to realize
that her cherished island
is beginning to disappear
due to the encroaching
waves, storms and ever
increasing heat. The
bloom of her idealism and
youth has been replaced
with something more
dreadful. 3. The Song
Itself We Have Forgotten
(an additional 20 years
later) - The island
clearly is doomed due to
rising seas resulting in
the evacuation of the
entire island. She is
experiencing a slow
simmering shock, is
dis-regulated, mumbling,
and thoroughly
disbelieving in what is
taking place. Out in the
distance I imagined an
ocean liner on the
horizon. She’s
standing on a long line
to be transported to the
ship that will take her
to an unknown destination
and destiny. 4. Aubade -
(a love poem welcoming or
lamenting the arrival of
dawn) As expressed by a
seagull riding the wind
above the ocean, my take
of it relates to the arc
of universal existence -
Beginning, Middle (life
expressed), End.
Performance Note:
Island Elegy and Aubade
may be performed by 3
sopranos - one for each
song- or by one soprano.
In the latter case the
final Aubade may be
performed via a

all three parts or two
parts with the soprano
singing the top part.
Alternatively, the

Arranged
for SATB choir, two
keyboards, strings, and
optional harp, with
soprano, tenor (optional)
and baritone soloists,
this fresh and unorthodox
interpretation reflects
on the words of the Latin
Mass by juxtaposing them
with poems in English.
This movement is entirely
in Latin and is a
beautiful SATB setting
(with accompaniment) of
the “Agnus
Dei†text. A tenor
or baritone soloist is
featured. Sweet and
flowing, this movement
makes a perfect
stand-alone anthem for
your choir. Duration
4:29.

Words by Paul Laurence
Dunbar.
Death by
Tyshawn Sorey was
commissioned by the L. A.
Opera for a streaming
premiere by mezzo-soprano
Amanda Lynn Bottoms in
February 2021, with
pianist Howard Watkins.
Its text, by the great
Black poet Paul Laurence
Dunbar, imagines just a
glimmer of light dawning
over a bleak, nightmarish
landscape, haunted by
death, which the composer
explicitly connects to
the current conditions
and precarity of Black
life in America in the
20th and 21st centuries.
(Dunbar himself died in
1906 at the age of 33).
This slow and melancholy
setting expands the poem
into a five-minute
lament.
This
piano/vocal score
includes the full text of
the poem as well as a
brief program note from
the composer. Clarifying
the racial contexts
surrounding the piece,
Sorey requests that the
roles of both vocalist
and pianist be played
exclusively by Black
American
performers.

Carrickfergus
is a city in Northern
Ireland, and this Irish
folk song of the same
name has been sung for
more than 300 years. It
is about a person longing
to be home, but the sea
is wide and he or she
can't cross over. The
person laments that as
aging occurs, friends and
family are missed more
and more. One of the most
beautiful melodies I've
ever heard, it has been
performed by soloists
Charlotte Church, Joan
Baez, and Jackie Evanko
and groups, The
Chieftains and Celtic
Woman. I hope you enjoy
singing this beautiful

A cool
viola feature! Beginning
with a solo introduction
invoking a Celtic lament,
it morphs into a driving
rock pulse of 3+3+2.
Unlike most rock tunes,
there is no need for
drums, guitar, or piano
as those roles have been
assigned entirely to the
strings. So take the
leap!
