Par COMBIER JEROME. Il a été question pour moi d'imaginer un 'événement' artistique intégrant le texte d'Impromptu d'Ohio qui puisse à la fois être donné dans une salle d'exposition et à la fois joué en concert. L'installation impliquait la rencontre de Pierre Nouvel, la version concert celle de Joël Jouanneau.
Dans les deux situations aussi différentes soient-elles, j'ai tenté d'imaginer un événement qui tisse un lien indéfectible entre le texte de Samuel Beckett, l'écriture d'une partition pour trio à cordes et une création visuelle, qu'elle soit vidéaste ou scénique.
C'est dans les marges du texte, ses entrebâillements, que la musique trouvera son espace. Les silences du textes - notés un temps par l'écrivain - s'étireront jusqu'à s'ouvrir sur un espace proprement musical. La musique peu à peu adviendra conjointement au texte, si bien que tous deux coexisteront dans une alternance rythmée, chacun pourtant dans son devenir propre.
Je veux croire, comme il a cru pouvoir convoquer la musique de Beethoven ou de Schubert, que l'écriture de Beckett (et plus singulièrement la parole de ses personnages) dessine un rythme que l'on puisse conjuguer au rythme de la musique même. J'ose alors imaginer un lieu d'entredeux, ni tout à fait parole, ni tout à fait musique, comme un estran que recouvrerait alternativement l'un ou l'autre. J'ose imaginer que les deux mondes (parole et musique) puissent décrire des devenirs qui se répondent.
La structure de la musique prendra intiment appui sur celle du texte. Il n'est pas question d'analogie, cela n'aboutirait pas, mais de puiser dans l'agencement des mots, leurs répétitions, dans la structure paragraphique du texte, la possibilité d'agencer la musique même, possibilité qui puisse être pour moi - j'imagine - une autre façon d'entendre ce que j'écris. Noir gris serait donc avant tout une expérience de la forme et du temps.
Au terme de son épuration fictive, on pourrait appeler le lieu de l'être (ou le dispositif qui atteste la question de l'être dans la forme du lieu) un 'noir gris'. Cela pourrait suffire... un noir tel que nulle lumière n'est supportable en contraste, le noir incontrasté. Ce noir est suffisamment gris pour qu'aucune lumière ne puisse lui être opposé comme son Autre. *

Shortly after the Second World War, a combative movement of Danish, Belgian and Dutch artists chose the cobra snake - extremely dangerous yet considered sacred - as a symbol of their resistance to strict guideliness of form. The name 'Cobra' also happens to contain the first letters of the cities Copenhagen, Brussels ans Amsterdam, from where most of the movement's members came. The Cobra movement, which existed from November 1948 until November 1951, can with some justicication be called the last major avant-garde movement of the 20th century. The source of inspiration for the composition Cobra comes from four paintings: 'Obhobning' by the Dane Egill Jacobsen; 'La jeune fille et lamort' by the Belgian Pierre Alechinsky; 'Orgeldraaier' and 'Le rythme joyeux de la ville' by the Dutch artists Karel Appel and Corneille. Obhobning means 'pile-up', which is represented musically in the first part by a melodic and harmonic pilling up of perfect fourth's. The first part is also characterized by a rhythmic feeling, which the painting gives through its use of numerous black stripes. In the painting La jeune fille et la mort, Pierre Alechinsky places a young girl opposite Death. The second part features the constantly pulsating motion of live while a creeping, dark, melodic line develops. The tension between life and death is tangible as a battle reveals itself. In part three, one hears the Orgeldraaier by Karel Appel, as cheerful and playful as an organ grinder's music. The painting Le rythme joyeux de la ville by Corneille is busy and extremely dynamic, a perfect source of inspiration for a powerful, rhythmic ending to this composition. / Niveau : 4 / Pièce de concert / Répertoire / Concert Band ou Harmonie

The only known chamber music by Gustav Mahler is a movement for piano quartet from his student days at the Conservatorium in Vienna (1875-1878). The present new arrangements by Ronald Kornfeil go some way to addressing this gap while they also enrich the repertoire with pieces that are very interesting and demanding in their own right. The composer's rich song output includes his Wunderhorn songs, the Songs of a Wayfarer, the Rückert songs, the Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children) as well as movements from his symphonies and the Song of the Earth. This book includes a selection of pieces that best suit the sound of the flute while providing plenty of variety. The arrangements transform Mahler's songs from their original conception for voice and piano or orchestral accompaniment into a purely instrumental dialogue between two equally important instrumentalists. In most cases the colourful orchestral versions provide the starting point. The omission of the text also demands different compositional techniques to bring out the various effects between indulgent sweetness and grotesque irony.

In 1945 Bela Bartok described 'Mikrokosmos' as a cycle of 153 pieces for piano written for 'didactic' purposes, seeing them as a series of pieces in many different styles, representing a small world, or as the 'world of the little ones, the children'. Stylistically Mikrokosmos reflects the influence of folk music on Bartók's life and the rhythms and harmonies employed create music that is as modern today as when the cycle was written.
