between Op. 1 (c.1751)
and Op. 2 (c.1761), were
‘among the finest
of their time’
while some of the others
were ‘remarkably
inventive and
original’ almost
sells this composer
short. Every single one
of these works, scored
for two violins, cello
and harpsichord, is
masterly and deserves a
permanent place in the
repertoire. Born in or
near Kassel, Fisher spent
several years in Holland,
teaching music from 1741
to 1745 at the university
of Leiden, before
emigrating to England.
After spending about two
years in London he
settled permanently in
Cambridge, where he
taught music to members
of the local music
society. His Op. 1 set,
dedicated to the same
society, epitomizes the
‘social’
character of the trio
sonata genre, where
individual virtuosity
yields its place to
amicable interaction
between the players.
Fisher was a cellist as
well as a violinist, and
this background is
brought out by the rare
eloquence of his bass
lines. The diversity of
movement types in these
ordinarily three-movement
sonatas is very
attractive. They include
powerful fugues,
expansive movements in
sonata form, languorous
middle movements
reminiscent of those in
operatic overtures and a
selection of dance
movements, all of which
mix baroque, galant and
classical elements in a
convincing synthesis.

Concerto 1945, inspired
by an American soldier,
(oboist from
Chicago)â â was
what Richard Strauss
noted down. And the
oboist 0nd soldier with
the American occupation
John de Lancie had indeed
asked Richard Strauss in
May 1945 whether he had
ever thought of writing
an oboe concerto. Strauss
answered in the negative,
but soon got to work
anyway. In October 1945,
he had completed the
score in Swiss exile; the
premiere took place in
Zurich in 1946. Not until
1948 did the first
edition appear in London,
presumably for the most
part without the
composer's involvement,
for both the printed
score and the orchestral
parts exhibit numerous
errors. Some of these
have been known for a
while, though others have
only now been discovered
by Hansjörg
Schellenberger through
his exact reconciliation
of the autograph full
score with the autograph
particella. The
world-class oboist thus
presents this concerto
for thefirst time in a
Henle Urtext edition in
both full score and piano
reduction!

Marcel Dupre. Dedicated
to Rene Vierne, this Op.
7 uses complex
figurations and pedals.
With such challenging
difficulty, the first and
third preludes were
pronounced?unplayable by
Charles-Marie Widor due
to their fast tempo,
their figurations and the
pedal chords. For a long
time, Dupre himself was
the only one able to play
them. Marcel Dupre is a
French organist who
reviewed some works by J.
S. Bach, including The
little Organ Book. He
composed numerous pieces
such as Lamento, Scherzo
and Titelooze Tombstone,
among others.

In the autumn of 1974
György Kurtág began
to copy selected pieces
from the series Games
into a music notebook for
Zoltán Kocsis who was
his student in earlier
years and who, throughout
his entire life, was one
of its most authentic
performers. Kocsis played
from this notebook in the
first public performance
of Games in 1974. The
gradually expanding
series of piano pieces
also appeared in print in
the course of later
decades however, he
always used this
collection - expanded
over 32 years since by
Kurtág - whenever he
played pieces from Games
in concert. Since the
time of this 1974
concert, as Kocsis wrote
later: ''I didn't know
that the spiral notebook
I received at thepremiere
would later become, as it
were, my permanent
companion. That I would
take it with me from
Japan to Canada, from
Australia to Iceland,
travelling to the world's
most prominent concert
halls, surviving fire
damage, flood, transport
catastrophes, theft
attempts, forced landings
and so on, and that -
well beyond the intention
of its being 'copied with
love' - it would include
works and sketches for
which this notebook would
become the principal
source.''The manuscript
gives a glimpse into
Kurtág's workshop from
the viewpoint of both
performers and
musicologists. The former
can understand more from
Kurtág's handwriting
about the composer's
intentions than from the
printed score. The
musicologists, however,
can study the historical
origins of the works:
some works can be found
here in more than one
version, others appear in
a version different from
the printed score.The
publication is
accompanied by a booklet
and a CD supplement. The
booklet contains Kocsis's
own personal preface, as
well as András
Wilheim's essay providing
information about the
collection and the pieces
contained therein. On the
CD we hear 11 works
performed by Kocsis, from
a recording made in 1982
which has not previously
been commercially
issued.

did not compose his
Visions fugitives â?? 20
â??fleeting visionsâ?
â?? in one go, but in
clusters between 1915 and
1917, immediately before
the Russian Revolution
that compelled him to
leave his native country
in 1918. We know from his
diaries that at least
some of them owe their
existence to
extra-musical impulses.
Thus several pieces were
inspired by people close
to him. Others impart his
emotional reaction to the
political situation with
its menacing brutality.
According to his own
statement, for example,
no. 19 â??was inspired
by the events of February
1917 in Petrogradâ?,
during the Revolution's
first phase. Technically
the pieces are not too
demanding, and are also
often used in teaching.
They now appear for the
first time in an Urtext
edition that considers
all the musical sources
created during the
composer's lifetime. In
his preface, Prokofiev
specialist Simon Morrison
provides biographical
context for the genesis
of this fantastic piano
cycle.

Francesca
da Rimini is a drama
for music in two acts by
Saverio Mercadante,
libretto by Felice
Romani; the text is
freely inspired by the
unfortunate events of the
two lovers, Francesca and
Paolo, of which Dante's
Comedy (canto V)
also
narrates. According to
some scholars, the first
performance of
Francesca da
Rimini took place in
Madrid in January 1828;
however, this date is not
reflected in the Diario
de Avisos de Madrid, a
publication that daily
reserved a conspicuous
space for news on the
shows staged in the
Spanish city: the years
between 1828 and 1831 in
fact do not mention the
work. Furthermore, no
printed libretto of
Mercadante's Francesca
da Rimini is
preserved today –
an inexplicable fact, if
one admits that the
performance took place.
The text of the opera can
be largely traced back to
the one prepared by
Romani for the homonymous
work by Antonio Carlini
(Naples 1825), which
Mercadante was able to
know before his stay in
Spain. Following the
missed Spanish premiere,
the opera should then
have been represented at
La Scala Theater in a
subsequent season, with
reliability the imminent
one of the 1831/32
carnival; but shortly
thereafter the impresario
died: thus the
contractual obligations
involving him were no
longer fulfilled, and,
for a second time,
Mercadante was then
forced to shelve the
plans about Francesca
da Rimini, put aside
now for several months.
In fact, the scoring
– very similar to
that of the operas
planned at La Scala in
the same Carnival period
– assumes that
Francesca da
Rimini was destined
for a theatre of great
means, like few others in
Italy besides La Scala.
But the failure of the
opera may also have been
due to the presence of
the part of an amoroso
en travesti,
Paolo, to whom Mercadante
assigns a prominent role
also in terms of music:
in 1831 and in Italy such
a solution was no longer
so frequent as a few
years before or in
provincial theatres, and
so this condition may
possibly have affected
the fate of the
negotiations in Milan,
and may explain how the
composer was then unable
to have the score
performed
elsewhere. This
critical edition is based
on manuscript copies
conserved in the Museo
internazionale e
Biblioteca della Musica
di Bologna (autograph
score) and in the
Biblioteca Histórica
Municipal in Madrid
(score and separate
parts).

reflected in the Diario
de Avisos de Madrid, a
publication that daily
reserved a conspicuous
space for news on the
shows staged in the
Spanish city: the years
between 1828 and 1831 in
fact do not mention the
work. Furthermore, no
printed libretto of
Mercadante's Francesca
da Rimini is
preserved today –
an inexplicable fact, if
one admits that the
performance took place.
The text of the opera can
be largely traced back to
the one prepared by
Romani for the homonymous
work by Antonio Carlini
(Naples 1825), which
Mercadante was able to
know before his stay in
Spain. Following the
missed Spanish premiere,
the opera should then
have been represented at
La Scala Theater in a
subsequent season, with
reliability the imminent
one of the 1831/32
carnival; but shortly
thereafter the impresario
died: thus the
contractual obligations
involving him were no
longer fulfilled, and,
for a second time,
Mercadante was then
forced to shelve the
plans about Francesca
da Rimini, put aside
now for several months.
In fact, the scoring
– very similar to
that of the operas
planned at La Scala in
the same Carnival period
– assumes that
Francesca da
Rimini was destined
for a theatre of great
means, like few others in
Italy besides La Scala.
But the failure of the
opera may also have been
due to the presence of
the part of an amoroso
en travesti,
Paolo, to whom Mercadante
assigns a prominent role
also in terms of music:
in 1831 and in Italy such
a solution was no longer
so frequent as a few
years before or in
provincial theatres, and
so this condition may
possibly have affected
the fate of the
negotiations in Milan,
and may explain how the
composer was then unable
to have the score
performed
elsewhere. This
critical edition is based
on manuscript copies
conserved in the Museo
internazionale e
Biblioteca della Musica
di Bologna (autograph
score) and in the
Biblioteca Histórica
Municipal in Madrid
(score and separate
parts).

Noel is based
on the famous English
Carol The First Noel.
The age of this song
is not clear.Some
scientists argue that tis
song is from early
thirteenth century,
others say that it's from
the sixteenth
century. The first
publication was in
'Christmas Carols,
Ancient and Modern',
compiled by William B.
Sandys. (London,
1833). The exact
origin is unknown. By
Norman influences on the
text, with the result
that the spelling of the
song is not certified
(Noel, Nowell), an
individual will sometimes
claim that France is the
cradle of this song, but
in general assumes that
the First Noel 'for the
first time somewhere in
England
sung.

In
the autumn of 1974
György Kurtág began
to copy selected pieces
from the series Games
into a music notebook for
Zoltán Kocsis who had
been his student in
earlier years and who,
even today, is one of its
most authentic
performers. Kocsis played
from this notebook in the
first public performance
of Games in 1974. The
gradually expanding
series of piano pieces
also appeared in print in
the course of later
decades; however, since
then he has used this
collection - expanded
over 32 years since by
Kurtág - whenever he
plays pieces from Games
in concert. Since the
time of this 1974
concert, as he writes: 'I
didn't know that the
spiral notebook I
received at the premiere
would later become, as it
were, my permanent
companion. That I would
take it with me from
Japan to Canada, from
Australia to Iceland,
travelling to the world's
most prominent concert
halls, surviving fire
damage, flood, transport
catastrophes, theft
attempts, forced landings
and so on, and that -
well beyond the intention
of its being 'copied with
love' - it would include
works and sketches for
which this notebook would
become the principal
source.' The manuscript
gives a glimpse into
Kurtág's workshop from
the viewpoint of both
performers and
musicologists. The former
can understand more from
Kurtág's handwriting
about the composer's
intentions than from the
printed score. The
musicologists, however,
can study the historical
origins of the works:
some works can be found
here in more than one
version, others appear in
a version different from
the printed score. The
publication is
accompanied by a booklet
and a CD supplement. The
booklet contains Kocsis's
own personal preface, as
well as András
Wilheim's essay providing
information about the
collection and the pieces
contained therein. On the
CD we hear 11 works
performed by Kocsis, from
a recording made in 1982
which has not previously
been commercially
issued.
