(1865–1936) lived
during a very
transitional period of
Russian music history,
active as a composer,
conductor, and teacher.
He was a part of the
Romantic school of
Russian music following
in the tradition of
Tchaikovsky, like his
fellow composers Borodin
and
Rimsky-Korsakov.During
his years at the
conservatory he
instructed many students
who chose to pursue the
modern trends set forth
by Debussy. Stravinsky,
Shostakovich, and even
Prokofiev took
instruction from
Glazunov. Although they
considered him
old-fashioned, he was
remembered as a
stabilizing influence
during transitional
times.Glazunov’s
music stayed within the
category of Russian
Romanticsm: nationalistic
with classical formality.
His list of works
includes numerous
symphonies, concertos,
piano and vocal works,
and chamber works
including seven string

sculpture, which in the

'Manhatten Abstraction'
appears as an amalgam of
some of the
compositorical habits
found in present pieces.
For instance, are present
here compositorical ideas
and melodic loans from
'Capriccio Pian'e Forte',
2nd String Quartet(1979),
'Four Compositions'
(1980), and 2nd Piano
Sonata(1982). The
question at hand is
mainly concerned with the
enhanced elaboration of
Ruders' use of the
classic English
change-ringing system: a
permuting method
pre-determining the order
of tone-appearances and
/or tone groups; a serial
technique in other words.
In spite of the rigidly
fixed material, Ruders
somehow manages to chisel
out a personal expression
by way of emphasising
contrasting elements
already existing within
the material itself. The
spiky, repetitive
sections form a
counterpart to a more
human violin-solo. This
dialectical tension is -
as hinted by the title -
a symphonic abstraction
of a fascinating
metropolis; the most
beautiful and the
ugliest. The subtitle: a
symphonic skyline
reflects the musical
erection of the Manhattan
profile, which under the
clear sky, materializes
into the most powerful
and compelling man-made
sculpture on earth. Thus
'Manhattan Abstraction'
is a homage to, as well
as a vision of, this
giant contraption of
concrete, glass, and
chrome.

wrote Introspeccion for
solo clarinet and,
although I had already
used the clarinet many
years ago (in 1963 with a
Duo for clarinet and
piano), I felt the need
to return to that
instrument again:
malleable, dynamic, with
a considerable tessitura
and an expressive and
effective timbre both in
pianissimo and
fortissimo.
Apart from
the Piano concerto I
wrote in 2003, over the
last four years I have
preferred to work with
chamber music. In 2005 I
used the clarinet again,
this time alongside the
classic string quartet, a
combination that has
always caught my
attention. So this is how
the Quinteto de la Sala
de Llevant arose, as a
work designed in a single
tempo that I think
follows along the same
lines marked by my
compositions in recent
years, in the sense that
all superfluous elements
are removed to leave a
strict musical discourse
that I hope can be
considered markedly
expressive.
The
Quinteto de la Sala de
Llevant was first
performed on 29 June 2005
at the Sala de Llevant in
the Library of Catalonia,
when I loaned my musical
archives to this
institution. It was
played by Josep Fuster
(to whom the work is
dedicated) on the
clarinet and the Glinka
Quartet (Ala Voronkova,
Guerassim Voronkov,
violins, Bernat Bofarull,
viola, Nabi
Cabestany). --The

2003, escribo
Introspeccion para
clarinete solo y, si bien
ya habia usado el
clarinete hace muchos
anos (en 1963 con un Duo
para clarinete y piano)
senti la necesidad de
volver al mismo
instrumento: ductil,
agil, de una tesitura
considerable y de un
timbre expresivo y eficaz
tanto en el pianissimo
como en el
fortisimo.
Exceptua
ndo el Concierto para
piano del 2003, en estos
ultimos cuatro anos he
trabajado preferentemente
la musica de camara. En
el 2005 vuelvo a usar el
clarinete, ahora junto al
clasico cuarteto de
cuerda, conjuncion que
siempre me habia llamado
la atencion. Nace, pues,
el Quinteto de la Sala de
Llevant, obra concebida
en un solo tiempo y que
creo que continua con la
linea marcada por el
autor durante estos
ultimos anos, en el
sentido de eliminar todo
elemento superfluo para
seguir un discurso
musical riguroso y que
querria marcadamente
expresivo.
El
estreno del Quinteto de

Matthias Sperger, no
doubt the leading double
bass player of his time,
was born on 23 March 1750
in the Lower Austrian
town of Feldsberg (today
Valtice, Czech Republic).
After studying in Vienna
and occupying various
posts in Pressburg and
Eberau, he was hired by
Grand Duke Friedrich
Franz I of
Mecklenburg-Schwerin for
the Duke's court ensemble
in Ludwigslust. There
Sperger died on 13 May
1812, a highly esteemed
man. His extensive
compositional oeuvre
(which includes 45
symphonies, chamher
works, church music and
concertos) found its
climax in his works for
double bass solo. His 18
concertos, sonatas and
chamber works for various
instrumental comhinations
off er the soloist
gratifying musical tasks
both from a musical as
well as a technical point
of view. The Adagio for
Double Bass and String
Quartet was composed
around 1796/97, no doubt
for the composer's own
use. The autograph
belongs to the
Landesbibliothek
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
(class. no. Mus. 5179).
The work is based on
thematic material from
the second movement of

enclosed for the solo
tuning customary today: F

string quartet Sir Roger
de Coverley for full
symphony orchestra and
Sir Henry Wood agreed, at
the last minute, to
include it in the last
night of the Queen's Hall
Promenade Concerts at the
end of that month. This
elaborate and colourful
orchestral version has
never been widely
performed, but has now
been brilliantly
transcribed by Alastair
Wheeler to provide a
miniature dance poem for
grade 5 level concert
band. Bridge's lively
treatment of one of
England's most famous
traditional dance
melodies will make a
fitting end to any
concert, with the strains
of Auld Lang Syne
introduced by Bridge as a
nod towards Sir Roger de
Coverley's traditional
function as the final
dance of a Christmas
Ball, as it was in Old
Mr. Fezziwig's party in
Dickens' A Christmas
Carol.

Divertimento I and
Divertimento II, for two
violins were composed in
1996. These two sister
compositions have the
additional attraction of
being unedited works
which are representative
of the composer's most
recent style. This
etymological description,
which defines a
personality rather than
an established musical
style, takes the form of
a succession of
contrasting dynamic
movements. One of the
most outstanding features
is the way in which the
two instruments break
away from their usual
range of sounds to create
the ideal conditions for
suggesting their latent
extent of sound
possibilities in
compositions that could
be extended perfectly
well into a string
quartet. The interplay
between the two
instruments opens up a
whole range of
possibilities: short
motives in an imitative
style often braking out
into a repetition of
brief themes with a lot
of personality, sequences
of transformations,
repetitive rhythms, etc.
All theses show the
virtuosity of the players
on their own and together
and because of their
characteristics, they are
written in a very clear
tonal language, a times,
modal, oriental, or even
pentatonic. The
progression of the
movements is governed by
a desire for variety:
between the fast opening
and closing movements
there is a sequence of
relaxed andante -some of
which are in an easy
two-part canon style- in
scherzzi -and these are
the lightest, most airy
fragments of the two

compuestos en el ano
1996. Un atractivo
adicional de estas dos
composiciones hermanas
raya en su condicion de
obras ineditas y
representativas de la
ultima manera del
compositor. La acepcion
etimologica, que define
un caracter mas que una
forma musical
establecida, se concreta
aqui en una sucesion de
movimientos contrastados
de gran dinamismo. Cabe
remarcar la capacidad de
los instrumentos para
superar su estricto
ambito sonoro y crear las
condiciones idoneas para
sugerir toda la amplitud
sonora latente en unas
composiciones que, con
toda propiedad, podrian
ser ampliadas en cuarteto
de cuerda. El juego al
que se someten los dos
instrumentos se halla
abierto a multiples
posibilidades: breves
motivos en estilo
imitativo susceptibles de
desembocar en elementos
tematicos reiterados,
poco desarrollados y de
fuerte personalidad,
mutaciones secuenciales,
ritmos obstinados, etc.,
que propician el
virtuosismo individual y
colectivo de los
ejecutantes y que, por
sus caracteristicas, se
inscriben en un lenguaje
tonal muy claro,
ocasionalmente abierto,
tambien, a trazos modales
y orientalizantes e,
incluso, a lo
pentatonico. El criterio
que rige la progresion de
los movimientos responde
a simples razones de
variedad: entre los
fragmentos extremos
rapidos, inicial y
conclusivo, una sucesion
de andante distendidos -a
veces en un descanso
estilo canonico a dos
voces- y de scherzo los
fragmentos mas ingravidos
y aereos de los
Divertimenti.
