pe Gaubert
(1879–1941) was a
very important teacher
and flutist in our
classical flute playing
lineage. In this edition
we have gathered his
beautiful, shorter
compositions for flute
and piano all in one
place, to be cherished as
“Gaubert’s
Treasures.â€Philippe
Gaubert personified the
modern French school of
flute playing as
introduced by his teacher
Paul Taffanel
(1844–1908) at the
Paris Conservatory.
Gaubert was a
multitalented musician, a
marvelous flutist as well
as a gifted composer,
teacher and master
conductor. Over his
lifetime he became one of
the most important
musical figures in France
between the World Wars in
the first half of the
twentieth century.
Gaubert’s musical
andpedagogical gifts to
us are passed along
through generations of
students and continue to
touch the hearts of many
who listen to his fine,
and refined,
music.Philippe Gaubert
studied composition at
the Paris Conservatory
with Raoul Pugno, Xavier
Leroux, and then for a
brief time with Charles
Lenepvu. It was after
this study that he won
the famous Prix de Rome
second prize in
composition. Even with
his schooling of theory
and harmony in Paris, he
was deeply influenced by
other composers of the
time, namely Debussy,
Fauré and Dukas.
Between the years of
1905–1914
Gaubert’s early
workswere arrangements
and short pieces written
for the year-end final
exam pieces at the
Conservatory.Between
1914–1918 Gaubert
served in the French Army
during World War I, most
notably in the battle of
Verdun in 1916. This was
considered one of the
largest battles against
the Germans in WWI. He
was wounded but his
creativity level was not
dampened. He was rewarded
for his service and
awarded medals for his
bravery. It was during
this time that he found
the energy to compose his
Deux Esquisses or 2
Scenes, and sketched out
his first flute
sonata.Gaubert composed
his remaining five flute
and piano works after
1922 in Paris, and
clearly his poetic soul
was transformed from the
earlier years. He took in
new forms and styles of
compositions such as a
Suite, a Ballade and a
Sonatine. He also
completed his Second and
Third Sonatas for Flute
and Piano, all of them
dramatic works in terms
of compositional
techniques and grandeur
of tone.Gaubert composed
music easily throughout
his lifetime, especially
during summer breaks when
the orchestra and Paris
Opera seasons were on
hiatus and he was not
conducting. He loved
literature and poetry
which inspired over
thirty vocal works from
1903 through 1938.He also
wrote twenty-six
instrumental chamber
works for other
instruments: oboe,
cornet, clarinet,
trombone, violin, viola,
cello, harp and
combinations of these
instruments with piano.
Some of these were
commissioned jury pieces,
but many were for his
musician friends.Six
full-length stage works,
both ballets and operas
for the stage, several
tone poems and symphonies
were written throughout
his lifetime.This edition
represents eleven out of
the sixteen works from

many ways, teaching with
Music Learning Theory
(MLT) is like weaving a
tapestry. There are a
multitude of threads that
must be thoughtfully and
strategically woven
together to create the
intended piece.
—from the
Introduction Children are
capable of remarkably
sophisticated musical
skills and
understandings, and for
decades music teachers
have been using Edwin E.
Gordon’s
groundbreaking method to
successfully develop
independent music makers
and thinkers in their
classrooms. In Weaving It
All Together, author
Heather Shouldice draws
from her two decades of
experience with Music
Learning Theory (MLT) to
present practical
activities, ideas, and
strategies to help
elementary general music
teachers thoughtfully and
purposefully weave
together the many
instructional threads of
MLT. The book is divided
into three parts. Part I
(“The Big
Pictureâ€) presents
the core concepts and
tenets of MLT, including
a summary of
Gordon’s
foundational Skill
Learning Sequence. In
Part II
(“Navigating Skill
Learning
Sequenceâ€),
Shouldice dedicates a
chapter to each of the
eight levels in the Skill
Learning Sequence, with
suggestions for learning
activities and teaching
strategies for each. Part
III (“Weaving the
Threadsâ€) takes a
broad view of how
students’
audiation and musical
skill development can be
guided throughout the
elementary years, with
chapters devoted to
informal music guidance,
harmonic skill
development, instrumental
applications,
facilitating and
documenting individual
student growth,
implementing Learning
Sequence Activities
(LSAs), and planning and
sequencing instruction.
Equally suited for
veteran and novice
teachers alike, Weaving
It All Together provides
a detailed yet flexible
roadmap for music
instruction and bridges
the gap between
Gordon’s
theoretical ideas and
their practical
implementation in the
general music classroom.

Build Independent
Creative Listeners in
Choir. Composed by
Anthony Bernarducci.
Music Education. 140
pages. GIA Publications
#9545. Published by GIA
Publications (GI.G-9545).
ISBN
9781622772551. How
choir members listen
directly impacts the
quality of their music
making. Listening
Awareness is a practical
book that guides choral
singers—and
members of any music
ensemble—to become
more aware of their own
sound as well as the
sound of their ensemble.
The goal is to help
musicians take ownership
of the sound they create
so singers and musicians
learn to provide
effective feedback to
improve the sound of the
entire ensemble. Author
Anthony
Bernarducci’s
approach is simple:
Students need to be
taught to accurately hear
musical concepts before
they can apply them in
their own music making.
He provides a practical
and pedagogical approach
to concepts such as tone,
balance, form, and
texture. He also includes
exercises that apply
aural concepts to style
and nuance of historical
and contemporary
literature—always
recommending suggested
repertoire, composers,
and recordings for each
style period. Other
topics in Listening
Awareness include the
different levels of
listening, the impact of
seating position on
sound, strategies for
starting a new work, and
the characteristics of
harmony and melody.
Finally, Listening
Awareness includes
reproducible worksheets
to assist with many of
the exercises. States
Bernarducci, “Our
ability to listen,
evaluate, and transform
will need to be
constantly sharpened
throughout our careers,
our students’
abilities are no
exception to this
need.†Anthony
Bernarducci is Assistant
Professor of Music at
Clemson University, where
he conducts the
Men’s Choir and
mixed chamber choir
Cantorei. He also teaches
courses in music theory
and composition. $19.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 1 to 2 weeks | | |

English. The
Essence of Bebop is by
critically acclaimed New
York saxophonist Jim
Snidero and reveals the
heart and soul of this
groundbreaking jazz style
and is the first real
manual for mastering
bebop. The 10 fun-to-play
studies are inspired by
Miles Davis, Charlie
Parker, Dizzy Gillespie,
Sonny Rollins, John
Coltrane, and many more,
offering a unique basis
for in-depth study and
analysis. Historical
insights as well as
recommended listening and
reading make this edition
an indispensable part of
jazz education.
Each etude
includes a study guide
that covers jazz theory,
but also goes well beyond
the math, providing
insight into how bebop
masters mold solos into
profound musical
statements. Concepts of
shape, timing, balance
and pacing provide the
framework in which ideas
unfold and flow.
Additional examples,
practice suggestions,
historical perspectives,
listening and reading
suggestions (60-plus
pages total) result in an
instant classic that's
perfect for individual or
classroom study.
The downloadable
play-along recording has
versions with and without
the soloist, and features
Michael Dease (trombone),
Mike LeDonne (piano),
Peter Washington (bass),
and Joe Farnsworth
(drums).
But what
if you aren't a student
or a professional? The
Essence of Bebop still
has immense value to
those interested in bebop
and hard bop. By
encouraging readers to
understand the music's
intent, slow down their
listening, and focus on
the swinging, the series
can help a jazz newcomer
dig this cerebral, often
pulse-pounding music. -
