To benefit
Chorus America, Stucky
allowed himself to be
auctioned off as a prize
- the high bidder would
receive a new work from
the composer. After a few
years and not really
hearing anything, Stucky
suddenly found himself up
against a deadline. He
reached back to a
favorite poem by A.R.
Ammons, Eyesight, which,
he says, Won't let...his
reader rest till the very
last word...one of those
sudden insights that
leave us
breathless.. This
piece has an odd history.
A few years ago, I agreed
to be one of
the“prizesâ€
in an auction to benefit
Chorus America: the
highest bidder wouldget a
new piece from me, while
their money went to the
organization. Thewinning
bid came from a
collection of several
professional choruses
anddirectors. But I was
always a little vague
about the details, and,
hearingnothing more about
it for a few years,
forgot the whole
thing.One day I received
a message from Thomas
Edward Morgan, directorof
the Ars Nova Chamber
Singers in Boulder: they
had scheduled thepremiere
of my new piece for a few
weeks later, and could
they have themusic,
please? I needed a text,
quickly, and (as usual) I
was in a Los Angeleshotel
room, not at home with my
books. So I turned to the
internet andsoon tracked
down my favorite poet,
A.R. Ammons
(1926-2001).Once I
stumbled on
“Eyesight,†I
remembered having loved
the poemyears before.
Archie must have loved
it, too, because he
included it bothin his
Collected Poems 1951-1971
and in the later Selected
Poems. It haseverything
you want in an Archie
Ammons poem: what Edward
Hirschcalled his
“offbeat, sideways,
unpredictable
radiance,†his
“homespunglory.â
It has one of his
trademark conversations
with a mountain
(perhapsfrom his native
North Carolina), it has
the fluid motion from one
line tothe next
(enjambment, if you want
to get technical) that
won’t let him
orhis reader rest till
the very last word of the
very last line, and it
has in thatlast line one
of those sudden insights
that leave us breathless:
“some thingsthat go
are gone.â€I miss
Archie, but he’s
not gone. I’m
grateful for the
wonderful poems heleft
us, and I’m
grateful that he was
always generous and kind
when I hadthe chutzpah to
add my music to his.

Eric
Ewazen’s THREE
INVENTIONS were inspired
by Bach’s Two-part
Inventions, yet they
sound thoroughly like
Ewazen. Composed for
harpsichord (with a piano
adaptation following
later), Ewazen’s
inventions maintain a
pure “one note per
hand†texture until
their final chord, with
strong-but-free imitative
counterpoint between the
two voices. While Ewazen
may be best known for his
wind music, he is a
pianist himself, and
composers’ works
for their own instrument
are a direct insight into
how they write for their
own performances. The
piano adaptation of THREE
INVENTIONS is also
available as a separate
publication. THREE
INVENTIONS was written
for my dear friend Maria
Rojas, who premiered the
work on a faculty recital
at Juilliard. Maria is
both a pianist and a
harpsichordist, and I
first met her when she
gave a demonstration of
the harpsichord for the
students in my theory
classes.I’ve
always been captivated by
Bach’s series of
Two-Part and Three-Part
Inventions. With the
Two-Part Inventions,
I’m amazed how
Bach could create such
wonderful intricacy and
counterpoint with only
two voices. I
consequently modeled my
inventions after the
counterpoint of Bach,
involving the traditional
contrapuntal devices he
used: imitation,
development, harmonic and
modal shifts,
fragmentation, and
sequence, essentially
creating a dialog between
two completely equal
voices conversing with
each other!Bach wrote 15
Two-Part Inventions (as
well as 15 Three-Part
Inventions, not to
mention the 48 preludes
and fugues in The
Well-Tempered Clavier!),
and that’s just
the start of his
voluminous repertoire for
the keyboard! I was happy
just to write
three!!!Each of my
inventions has a
distinctive mood. The
first is in a relaxed,
yet cheerful C Major
tonality (as a nod to
Bach’s Invention
No. 1 in C Major); the
second is heartfelt and
lyrical; and the third
invention (involving a
Gigue rhythm in the
compound meter of 12/8)
is energetic, and full of
life and spontaneity. The
third is primarily in a
minor tonality, resulting
in a feeling of drama,
bringing the THREE
INVENTIONS to an exciting
finale.

Heavenly
Father was commissioned
by Sydney Chamber Choir
for a concert in 2022
which featured Heinrich
Schütz’s
Musikalische Exequien.
Melodic lines from
Schütz’s work
are used throughout
Heavenly Father: the
first soprano melody in
the opening chorus at
‘Herr Gott Vater in
Himmel’ is
featured at the beginning
and repeated throughout,
as are the melodies, for
example, at ‘Also
hat Gott die Welt
geliebt’, and at
‘seinem
verklärten
Leibe’, among
other places.
In a
conversation about what
this commission would be,
it was agreed that the
sense of the work would
be about the circle of
life expressed in
Musikalische Exequien
rather than about death
itself. It is because of
this ‘sense’
that the end of Heavenly
Father is reversed,
illustrating a musical
circle: the lower voices
sing the ‘Herr Gott
Vater in Himmel’
phrase backwards, and the
upper voices sing the
melodies backwards that
were sung by the lower
voices at the
beginning.

These
conversations about music
took place between
Wilhelm Furtwangler and
Walter Abendroth in 1937.
They always deal with a
certain topic, such as
with the question of
different possibilities
of interpretation, with
the interaction between
artist and audience, with
the relationship between
orchestra and conductor,
with classical and
modern, tonal and atonal
music. Wilhelm
Furtwangler voices his
opinion in a lively and
spirited manner, always
being aware of his
artistic mission and
never losing his sense of
clarity and logic in the
music. Walter Abendroth
writes: 'The extent to
which conscious
intellectual work for its
part is rooted in the
immediate experience of
the work of art and is
induced only from there
to feel this and follow
that will certainly be of
particular appeal to the
readers of these
conversations.'.
