Drifting?utilizes musical
passages to allude to the
image of something
drifting down a river in
the woods. It journeys
through twists and turns,
placid streams and
roaring rapids,
eventually making a grand
entrance into open
waters. The musical
passages in this piece

conjure images of
something, perhaps a
leaf, gently drifting
down a river in the
woods. It journeys

eventually making a grand

Drifting<

opens, soft pizzicato
strings are uttered in
the lower string voices,
while the upper voices
slowly swell into the
appearance of the main
motive in m. 9. This
theme develops and passes
through several voices
until being replaced by a
new motive in m. 36,
accompanied by driving
rhythms and frequent
modulations. A powerful
resurgence of the
original motive occurs in
m. 60. Melodic remnants
of the previous sections
are presented in a new
fashion as the piece
comes to a dramatic close
with all voices playing
in rhythmic unison in the
closing
measures.. The musical

The Skye Boat
Song, among the most
popular of all Scottish
folk tunes, deals with
the flight of Bonnie
Prince Charlie (Charles
Edward Stewart) from
Scotland to the Isle of
Skye in 1746, after
having been defeated on
Culloden Moor by the
English Army of King
George II. The present
setting, for either Tenor
or Bass Trombone and
Piano, is mostly lyrical
and passes through a
series of episodes that
evoke watery images in
various ways. A stormy
episode which
superimposes a more
martial tune (relying
heavily on the familiar
scotch snappy rhythm)
against a variation of
the original folk tune
leads to brief quotations
from Mendelssohn's
Hebrides overture (the
Isle of Skye is part of
the group of islands
known as the Hebrides)
before a short
recapitulation of the
theme. $22.50 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks

Yi’s beautiful and
highly-textured tone poem
was inspired by ancient
Chinese poetry; its
melodic ideas were
developed from musical
phrases characteristic of
Chinese opera. Wang
Ya’s original verse as
translated by Chen Yi
reads:“SONG OF SPRING
OUTING”Ten thousand
apricot trees by the
riverside,Spring flowers
bloom after the wind at
night.Covered over the
garden, colors dark and
light,Mirrored in the
green water
ripples. SONG OF
SPRING OUTING was
commissioned by the
Center for East Asian
Studies and the Asian
Classical Music
Initiative at the
University of Kansas in
2022 for Dr. Yi-Yang Chen
to premiere in 2023.The
work was inspired by an
ancient Chinese poem with
the same title:Song of
Spring Outingby Wang Ya
(Tang Dynasty)English
translation by Chen YiTen
thousand apricot trees by
the riverside,Spring
flowers bloom after the
wind at night.Covered
over the garden, colors
dark and light,Mirrored
in the green water
ripples.This inspiring
image is like taking a
walk through a beautiful
garden with layers of
colorful trees and
flowers, mirrored in the
green water.The opening
phrase of the music
introduces the signature
intervals, the leap of a
seventh found in Beijing
Opera fiddle’s
language, followed by
melodic material with a
major 2nd and perfect 4th
in pentatonic style as
the thematic materials.
[C-Bb-G in bars 1-2,
followed by the top
pitches A-B and Ab-E( in
bars 2-3]. This statement
is brought back
(Rehearsal F) in a
retrograded form of the
introduction at the
climatic end of the
piece.The musical form is
a combination of
variations on thematic
materials, and a rondo.
After the introductory
section, Rehearsal A
introduces an
improvisation-like
mountain song melody
(developed from the
pentatonic material in
the
introduction).Rehearsal B
brings in a lively
texture in short
groupings with staccato
in both hands (using the
seventh leap interval
introduced in the opening
of the piece).Rehearsals
C and D develop the
introduction’s
pentatonic melody and the
mountain tune (introduced
in Rehearsal A) with more
layers in the
texture.Rehearsal E
develops the material
presented in Rehearsal B,
with an extended range in
both ends of the
keyboard, increasing the
freshness and
excitement. $16.99 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 1 to 2 weeks

9x12 inches. A
mirage is an illusion,
something without
substance that does not
really exist. Although
not real, its
unattainable nature is
perfect for musical
inspiration. Composer
Jacob de Haan was
strolling through a
picturesque forest of the
Dutch Gelderland when he
thought he saw a body of
water. While there was no
water, its mere image
created waves that can be
relived in De
Haan’s original
composition, Mirage.
Mirage is
het Engelse synoniem voor
‘Fata
Morgana‘. De
creatieve aanleiding voor
deze compositie was dan
ook het verhaal van een
wandelaar die in een
boslandschap in
Gelderland water denkt te
zien. Het in het triodeel
deelsgezongen
‘wandelthemaâ€
brengt de vreugde die
de toeschouwer aan dit
natuurverschijnsel
beleeft bijzonder goed
tot
uitdrukking.
Mirag

kreativer Anstoß
für diese
Komposition diente Jacob
de Haan ein
Spaziergänger, der
durch eine Waldlandschaft
im holländischen
Gelderland geht und dabei
glaubt, ein Gewässer
zu sehen. Das im Trio
teilweise gesungene
Spaziergangs“-Thema
bringt die Freude an
diesem Naturerlebnis
besonders gut zum
Ausdruck.

lumière donne la
sensation de
l’existence
d’une nappe
d’eau au pied
d’un arbre. Mirage

de le découvrir. Ce

que le Thème de la

partiellement chanté.

Hosokawa says:The lotus

thirty-minute composition
exposes a musical theme
whose rampant changes are
set in three movements
that correspond to some
of the famous eight
triagrams of the 'I GING'
(the Book of Changes):
TSCHEN is the awakener,
the thunder, to which the
properties of the
provocative, Violent,
associated with impetuous
growth. KAN as depth and
abyss has the image of
water, which corresponds
to the moon and
everything mysterious,
difficult to understand

(logically this movement
is based on a 12-tone
series and a shifted,
mirror-symmetrical
rhythm). TOUEI is the
pleasure, the friends,
the happiness, the

changes do not want to
imitate Asian models in
terms of rhythm or
melody, but rather remain
in the language
conventions of Western
music in the sound
material. The bridging to
Chinese music succeeds
above all through the use
of the sheng (one of the
oldest musical
instruments) and the
formal implementation of
the given spiritual
principles in tonal
growth processes. Enjot

one of the dedicatory
poems to his verse play
The Shadowy Waters
(1906), William Butler
Yeats asks: Is Eden far
away...? Do our woods and
winds and verponds cover
more quiet woods, More
shining winds, more
star-glimmering ponds? Is
Eden out of time and out
of space? How do you
answer such questions? We
have only the vague
elusive promptings of our
own mysterious, troubled
hearts to tell us that
the Eden we long for is
there, somewhere beyond
the physical world which
frames our existence, in
another realm of
different dimensions. And
- what is most painful to
admit - that it is closed
to us in the form in
which we live and
breathe, even if at times
we do have
intimations..., Yeats is
telling us that this
paradise, this Eden we
yearn for is here -
present even if
invisible, palpable even
if intangible. In his
Second Symphony, Mahler
meets an angel who tells
him he can't get into
heaven, he's locked out.
The news is shattering.
What follows is an
inconsolable sorrowing,
the same sorrowing that
comes when we wake to the
realization that we too
are locked out of Eden.
Eden is the heaven of our
longing and desire for
release from pain and
suffering. Eden is the
image in our restive
minds that reflects the
reconciled, resolved,
quiescent state of soul
we hunger for. But Eden
eludes -because it is not
a place. It is a state of
soul which answers none
of the illusory,
hampering conditions that
shape and bind us to the
real world of our bodies,
our appetites, our
passions, and our
beliefs. I have turned
Yeats' question Is Eden
out of time and out of
space? into its own
answering. However near
we may sense its presence
at times, Eden remains
unreachable, ungraspable,
unknowable, unthinkable.
It forever eludes us. I
wrote this music the way
I did to shut out -with
quietness and
otherworldliness - the
clamor and clang of the
raucous Garish Day, to
turn away its tumult and
noise, to negate its
stridency and chaos.
Perhaps in the cleansing
stillness and blessing of
this emptied-out state of
soul, Eden, through still
hidden, may not be so far
way; though still
unreachable, may be close
enough almost to
touch. In one of the
