The ancient
Egyptian empire began
around 3100 B.C. and
continued for over 3000
years until Alexander the
Great conquered the
country in 332 B.C. Over
the centuries, the
Egyptian empire grew and
flourished into a highly
developed society. They
invented hieroglyphics,
built towering pyramids
(including the Great
Pyramid of Giza, the
oldest of the Seven
Wonders of the World),
and the created many
household items we still
use today, including
toothbrushes, toothpaste,
eyeliner, black ink, and
the forerunner of
modern-day paper.
Included among their
achievements were a
series of highly
developed funerary
practices and beliefs in
the Afterlife. As the
average lifespan of an
Egyptian hovered around
30 years, living past the
death of oneAs physical
body was a legitimate
concern. Egyptians
believed that upon death,
their souls would
undertake a harrowing
journey through the
Netherworld. If they
survived the horrific
creatures and arduous
trials that awaited them,
then their souls would be
reunified with their
bodies (hence the need to
preserve the body through
mummification) and live
forever in a perfect
version of the life they
had lived in Egypt. To
achieve this, Egyptians
devised around 200
magical spells and
incantations to aid souls
on the path to the
Afterlife. These spells
are collectively called
The Book of the Dead.
Particular spells would
be chosen by the family
of the deceased and
inscribed on the tombAs
walls and scrolls of
papyrus, as well as on a
stone scarab placed over
the deceasedAs heart.
Subsequent collections of
spells and mortuary
texts, such as The Book
of Gates, assisted a soul
in navigating the twelve
stages of the
Netherworld. Not only did
these spells protect and
guide the soul on this
dangerous path, but they
also served as a
safeguard against any
unbecoming behavior an
Egyptian did while alive.
For instance, if a person
had robbed another while
alive, there was a spell
that would prevent the
soulAs heart from
revealing the truth when
in the Hall of Judgment.
Rites for the Afterlife
follows the path of a
soul to the Afterlife. In
Inscriptions from the
Book of the Dead
(movement 1), the soul
leaves the body and
begins the journey,
protected by spells and
incantations written on
the tombAs walls. In
Passage though the
Netherworld (movement 2),
the soul is now on a
funerary barque, being
towed through the
Netherworld by four of
the regionAs inhabitants.
We hear the soul slowly
chanting incantations as
the barque encounters
demons, serpents,
crocodiles, lakes of
fire, and other terrors.
The soul arrives at The
Hall of Judgment in
movement 3. Standing
before forty-two divine
judges, the soul
addresses each by name
and gives a A!negative
confessionA(r) connected
to each judge (i.e. A!I
did not rob,A(r) A!I did
not do violence,A(r) and
so on). Afterwards, the
soulAs heart is put on a
scale to be weighed
against a feather of
MaAat, the goddess of
truth. If the heart
weighs more than the
feather, it will be eaten
by Ammut, a hideous
creature that lies in
wait below the scale, and
the soul will die a
second and permanent
death (this was the worst
fear of the Egyptians).
But if the heart is in
balance with the feather,
the soul proceeds onward.
The final stage of the
journey is the arrival at
The Field of Reeds
(movement 4), which is a
perfect mirror image of
the soulAs life in
ancient Egypt. The soul
reunites with deceased
family members, makes
sacrifices to the
Egyptian gods and
goddess, harvests crops
from plentiful fields of
wheat under a brilliant
blue sky, and lives
forever next to the
abundant and nourishing
waters of the Nile. Rites
for the Afterlife was
commissioned by the
Barlow Endowment on

Reed Quintet, Calefax
Reed Quintet, and the

This
piece takes its title
from the eponymous poem
by Edgar Allan Poe.
Whittall had originally
intended to keep his
distance expressively
from Poe's Gothic world,
Poe's central image - a
decaying city in the
dimming West ruled by
death, slowly sinking
into watery oblivion -
was a powerful one.
Perhaps inevitably, the
piece took on shades of
the slow-motion
humanitarian disaster
unfolding on Europe's
southern shores, bringing
out undertones of
desperation, pursuit,
obsessive, elegiac
reflection, and
ultimately despair as it
slides into the
depths.

ser's note: Walter De La
Mare's poem Clouded with
snow paints an
atmospheric picture of
late afternoon in winter
and I was drawn to the
image of a bleak yet
beautiful landscape with
the faint glow of a
watery sun setting over
fields of white. I
attempted to create a
sense of wintery
stillness through the
'oo's of the opening bars
with their slightly bare
harmonies, out of which
the melody emerges. The
tune then weaves its way
through the upper and
lower voices, with the
texture thickening to
illustrate the shedding
of the sun's rays in
verse two and the drawing
in of the dark in verse
three. At the close, the
slower tempo, together
with the gentle
dissonance and long
melisma on the word
'floating', leaves us in
an atmosphere of moonlit
calmness.

DUNHU
ANG FANTASIA is a
fascinating 12-minute
drama inspired by art
from grottoes in the
ancient town of Dunhuang
in western China. These
frescoes preserve images
of music and dance
scenes, including the
postures and attitudes of
performers, and of the
musical instruments used.
Zhou Long’s music
begins with a mysterious
introduction driven by
drum-like textures,
followed by a series of
episodes, enhanced by
captions of the artwork
inspiring each section
and evocations of the
ancient musical
instruments. Commissio
ned and with fingering by
Zou Xiang, Dunhuang
Fantasia was composed in
the fall of 2017. The
music was inspired by the
art of the Mogaoku
grottoes in the ancient
town of Dunhuang in
western China. The
frescoes of the Dunhuang
grottos preserve a number
of music and dance
performance scenes,
including images of the
postures and attitudes of
performers, and of a
number of musical
instrument types are
used.The most popular
form of music indigenous
to this region is the
huar, a folk-song type
current among a number of
nationalities. The huar
is actually a kind of
mountain song. Along with
huar, Dunhuang pipa qupu
(Dunhuang pipa notation)
is also an inspiration
for elements in this
music.The music begins in
adagio as a mysterious
introduction. The
drum-like rhythm patterns
beating in the lowest
region of the piano, with
a muted-string sonority,
creates an expanded space
to enhance the echoes
from the grottos. This is
soon followed by the
first main section, Cup
of Happiness, featuring
the huar and Dunhuang
pipa melodies along with
the dance rhythm. In the
next section, Water Drum,
the music becomes medium
tempo. In the section
Dialogue in Presto, the
music becomes more active
and contrapuntal. The
section Tune: Changsha
Girl is in a faster tempo
as a dance scene. The
Coda starts with dense
rhythms, and tension is
gradually intensified to
reach a climax,
culminating in a return
of the opening
section.

De
Algunos Canciones de Juan
de la Cruz. This work was
commissioned by the BBC
for the 10th anniversary
of the BBC Northern
Singers in 1975. 'Dos
Coros is a setting for
voices of two poems by
the 16th century Spanish
mystic St John of the
Cross. St John is widely
considered to be the
greatest of the Spanish
mystic poets, because he
comes closest to
expressing what is
usually considered to be
inexpressible - mystical
experience. His poetry is
all about the intense
excitement of the union
with God, but,
paradoxically, the word
God is rarely used, and
not at all in the two
poems set here. Another
paradox is that he is
able to express great
serenity by employing the
imagery of rushing water,
flight and even
drunkenness. If mystical
experience is near
impossible to convey in
words, then maybe it is
natural that many
composers have taken up
the challenge of
conveying it in their own
medium.' Geoffrey

A sprite
is a small or elusive
supernatural being such
as an elf or pixie. This
piece is evocative of
just such beings. It is
playful in character,
portraying images of
these beings as they
dance about and frolic in
their own spaces---be
that wood, water, fields,
or even in our
imagination. These
sprites invite you to
play with them as you
listen to the music.

Reaching out to
the hearts and musical
sensibilities of a wide
range of Christian
believers, Fr. Tim
Valentine’s Rhythm
and Rhyme unites both
contemporary and
classical sounds with
inspired texts to create
a wonderful new
collection of music for
the church. I Saw a River
delights in the images of
water and light through
the glorious sounds of a
gospel choir, organ and
horn section. Translated
from one of St. Thomas
Aquinas's great hymns to
the Eucharist, O
Pilgrims' Meal is an
ideal communion hymn
lending itself easily to
unison congreageational
singing. Lamentation is a
heartbreakingly lovely
piece with a Renaissance
feel. From contemporary
to classical, spirited
joy to heartfelt sadness,
this great new collection
envelops all in the
“rhythm and
rhyme†of the
Church’s song.

As
the name implies, this
work portrays a morning
run up a mountain and the
feeling that comes with
the wonderful vistas that
surround. Students will
experience images of
beautiful vegetation and
fresh-water streams as
they traverse the
mountain path. All notes
are playable in D Major

of study, with no low
second fingers. The
adventurous theme and
accompaniments are
composed of simple
rhythms that sound great
and are easy to put
together.
