Blythe accepted Hall's proposal, and her request was that Hall write a song cycle for contralto voice. In recounting her motivation for writing this piece, Hall - in a discussion with Blythe at the Fall Island Vocal Arts Seminar (where Hall was the Guest Composer in 2018) - said You know what I think is really so wonderful is how you [Blythe] communicate, from here to there, right to the audience...it just speaks, the words, the text, come right...right to the heart of each person...I was thinking, what a wonderful person, what a wonderful voice...to be able to communicate...I've just got the most perfect singer to take these songs, this wonderful subject of love, and present it to the worldThe seven poems Hall set in Of That So Sweet Imprisonment were chosen from James Joyce's early book of poems, Chamber Music (Elkin Mathews, London) published in 1907. This work isdedicated to him in tribute – as both an important American composer and a significantcontributor to America’s contemporary musical life.The work’s basic source material is the plainchant Ave maris stella (“Hail, star of the seaâ€) –appropriate because of Duquesne’s standing and history as a Catholic university. When thecomposition of this work first began, the original plan was for a celebratory and vibrant piece.As the planning progressed, however, personal circumstances intervened and began to changethe work’s tone – becoming substantially bleaker and more obsessive.The title of the first movement, Pentimento, is defined as “an underlying image in a painting,as an earlier painting, that shows through when the top layer of paint has become transparentwith age.†The melodic and harmonic material for the movement is entirely drawn from theplainchant source, although it is completely transformed and covered up – as in a pentimento.At various points, one can begin to hear the original plainchant “peek out†in subtle ways.The opening section of the movement obsesses again and again on what sounds like a“beginning†– as though it is trying to begin again and again. After a brief bassoon cadenza, afast and driving section starts, marked “sinister.†After driving through a series oftransformations on the plainchant material, a bridge passage leads to further attempts at the“beginning†again. Finally, these attempts are given up, and the plainchant material (theunderlying layer) begins to show through quietly – in preparation for the next movement.In the second movement, Interrupted Motet, the plainchant theme is used in a morestraightforward fashion. After the opening declamatory statements, the following sectionsmove between more free developmental techniques, based on the first movement’stransformations, and “motet†sections – using cantus firmus methods and textures fromRenaissance music. The tone and palate is, however, much darker and more obsessive.There is a brooding ponderousness to these contrapuntal developments. Although it borrows its short melodic and rhythmic motif from Debussy’s still and calm work, its mood is diametrically opposed – in truth, an appropriate title for this movement might well be blood in the snow! After the texture unwinds, shatters, and disintegrates, the three instruments feel their way in the dark and gradually attempt to piece things back together. Nevertheless, the piano concludes with a muffled, resigned version of its introductory gesture, suggesting that nothing has been resolved. The second movement oscillates between contemplative and playful moods. This ambivalence is present from the start, when the searching violin solo of the opening is punctuated by playful bird-like comments from the piano. The clarinet ushers in a faster middle section during which the three instruments have a dialogue and both the bird idea and the violin’s rising

Around the Cauldron was inspired by the three witches from Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. With a nod to multi-movement pieces such as Schumann's Scenes From Childhood and Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition, Around the Cauldron is comprised of seven short scenes, each of which evokes a mood that resonates with an image of three witches gathered around a cauldron in a dark forest, muttering spells, and adding selected creatures to a bubbling stew. The movements carry individual titles: In Dusk, Pounce, Transmutation, Boiling, Witches Waltz, Newts’ Lament, and Sacrificial. Most of the melodies in the piece were tailored to fit lines from the original Shakespearean text and were also arranged as songs for a production of Macbeth at Ramapo College of New Jersey. Thus, the main theme sets the play’s immortal opening words: Fair is foul and foul is fair / Hover through the fog and filthy air. Honoring the three witches, the piece reflects the number three in its rhythms, which highlight groups of three beats; in its themes, which are constructed of three phrases; and in its instrumentation, which suggests that each instrument represents a different witch. Around the Cauldron was commissioned by Concert Artists Guild with support from the Adele and John Gray Endowment Fund for Lysander Piano Trio, which is fittingly named after another Shakespearean character.

The idea to compose a shorter work closely related to Antonin Dvořák's Mass in D major op. 86 came from the director of the course, Prof. Annedore Hacker-Jakobi, from which, after the composer's intensive study of Dvořák's tonally very bright Mass, a dark intermezzo developed as an insert between the Credo and the Sanctus. In the process, Dvořák's scoring was adopted unchanged. The frame text comes from the Credo and was deliberately chosen in reference to Olivier Messiaen's work of the same name. The central text Salvum me fac comes from Psalm 68 and has come down to us as a Gregorian responsorial chant. The title et expecto, intentionally omits the s in et exspecto contained in the ordinarium missae and emphasizes the contradictory meaning between the (Er)warten and the (Er)schauen.

The Grim Reaper’s Suite consists of five humorous and at the same dark pieces for five guitars to celebrate the humanity of the Grim Reaper. Two of these pieces are the well-known tune of Happy Birthday in two different and witty variations. The work was conceived to be performed live during the projection of a film by Apostolos Paraskevas called I Finally Did It. The work was premiered in 2009 by an array of well-known soloists at the Iserlohn Guitar Festival in Germany. Duration: approx. 10 minutes Apostolos Paraskevas is a classical guitarist and composer as well as an award-winning film director and producer. He has received multiple international awards for his compositions and was nominated for a Grammy Award. He is the only guitarist ever to have a major orchestral piece performed at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Lukas Foss––and the only musician who has performed there in a Grim Reaper outfit. He was the founder and served for 16 years as the artistic director of the International Guitar Congress-Festival of Corfu, Greece. He is a voting member of the Recording Academy (Grammys). After his undergraduate music studies in Volos he pursued advanced studies in classical guitar with Costas Cotsiolis (diploma, 1990) and Leo Brouwer (Havana 1984, 1988), as well as postgraduate studies in composition with Lukas Foss and Theodore Antoniou (DMA in composition, Boston University, 1998). Paraskevas embarked on a successful career as a guitar soloist and contemporary composer, achieving distinctions in both disciplines: Grammy nomination for Chase Dance (Bridge Records, 1999); first prize for Night Wanderings (Lukas Foss Composition Competition, 2000); first prize for Phygein Adynaton (National Composers Conference, 1997); and numerous prestigious commissions, performances, and publications. Following teaching posts at Northeastern and Boston Universities, Paraskevas has taught since 2001 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston (professor of composition and classical guitar). His eclectic compositional style arises as an idiosyncratic integration of seemingly conflicting influences – from avant-garde approaches to harmonic structure, form, and timbre, to pop-folk modal and rhythmical concepts – amalgamated into a personal evocative musical language, characterized by rhythmic verve, melodic grace, dramatic (and sometimes unexpectedly humorous) gestures, and ritualistic or theatrical elements. The latter feature has also led Paraskevas to the creation of films, notably the acclaimed I Finally Did It (Gold award, California Film Awards 2010), dealing wittily with Death, a recurring extra-musical theme in his music. Des Baches Weigenlied (The Brook’s Lullaby)This is the final song in Die Schöne Mullerin, and is a lullaby for the travelling miller as he drowns himself in the brook that he followed throughout his journey. The girl he was serenading in Morgengruss did not return his feelings and eventually fell in love with a hunter instead, which is why the miller chooses to commit suicide at the end of the story. Written in strophic form, this song is very repetitive and should be performed in a hypnotic and stately manner, in order to conjure up the image of the gently flowing water rocking the protagonist into an eternal sleep. Des Baches Wiegenlied serves the same role as Der Leiermann, and while they both provide a very bleak conclusion to a song cycle, Des Baches Wiegenlied should create a mood of peaceful sadness and sorrow, rather than the dark desolation of its Winterreise counterpart; it is, after all, a lullaby.This classic Schubert song has been arranged for voice and acoustic guitar in order to provide an alternative accompaniment option for singers who want to perform Schubert’s lieder with guitar instead of piano.

'Landscape With Deserted House' is a piece of a dark and very individual character, almost a 'gothic piece'. The topos of the deserted house comes from the literature of Victorian England, but also points toward the present time, especially toward Northern Europe where, after half a century of migration from the countryside, countless houses and estates are unoccupied and left to decay. It is especially the percussion part of 'Landscape With Deserted House', mainly played on simple everyday objects, that refers to this aspect of the title while the other instruments create a sound space full of peculiar poetry in finely tuned mixtures. A piece which will delight every professional musician with experience in modern playing techniques.
