Among his secular works were a number of collections of polkas and waltzes written for solo piano. This series of works presents arrangements of a number of Davis’ compositions prepared for the instrumentation of Alford’s “Hungry Five†polka band books and serve as a fine addendum to those familiar pieces. While the clarinet parts tend to be the most active, they often feature diatonic scalar patterns. All parts should remain accessible to most intermediate-level players. The “Blue Bird’s Call†Polka (originally published in 1876) contains onomatopoeic chirps in the clarinet parts that make for a light and fun addition to any program. “Good Enough†Polka (originally published in 1874) is an example of Davis’ standard composition form used throughout most of this collection. “Harvest Home†Waltz (originally published in 1873) adds a pleasant waltz to the collection. Its melody is first presented simply,then embellishments are added as the piece continues. Davis’ aptly-titled “Jolly Friend†Polka (originally published in 1874) is a jovial tune with a bouncy melody that moves the clarinetists nimbly around a bit! “Lake-Side†Polka (originally published in 1874) has more participation in the Trumpet and Trombone parts than are found in much of the rest of this collection. “Nimble Toe†Polka (originally published in 1874) passes the melodic and accompaniment elements around the ensemble for a bit of variety for the players. This set makes up a good suite for concert performance. Although listed as a tuba ensemble compositions, euphoniums usually play the higher two parts. All three are written in five parts. Optional substitute parts for French Horn and Flüglehorn are also included in this set, as well as euphonium parts in treble clef.Salutation Fanfarewas composed in 1985 for performance at the New York Brass Conference at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City. That year, famous tubist Harvey Phillips was being honored at a special concert. This piece started the concert with the composer conducting an ensemble of about twenty euphonium and tuba players made up of Indiana University alumni, free-lance musicians and other friends of Mr. Phillips. The piece is based on the phrase Harvey Phillips Mr. Tuba. Simple Giftsis a traditional American folksong that has been arranged by many composers over the years. This arrangement was done in 1990 for performance at the International Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association Conference held in Sapporo, Japan. It was premiered by the Colonial Tuba Quartet that year. It has been arranged in four parts as well as this arrangement in five parts.Octubafest Polkawas composed in 1976 at the request of Harvey Phillips for performance at the Octubafest activities at Indiana University. It was premiered by the Indiana University Tuba Ensemble that year, conducted by Harvey Phillips. Mr. Phillips was the first to use the word Octubafest, probably in 1974 or 1975. Octubafest celebrations have taken place at many schools and universities ever since, usually in the month of October. He said that having an Octubafest celebration early in the school year provided an opportunity for new students entering college to get to know each other. At Indiana University during Harvey Phillips’ tenure (1973 – 1996) the Octubafest concerts were always followed by a party at Harvey’s house, making for a good time for all. Gregory Fritze is a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer and conductor. He recently retired from Berklee College of Music where he was Professor and Chair of Composition, serving on the faculty from 1979 to 2016. He has written over ninety compositions for orchestra, band, chamber ensembles and soloists. He has won over sixty composition awards both nationally and internationally, including First Prize in the 1991 TUBA International Etude Composition Competition, for his Twenty Characteristic Etudes for Tubaan important part of the tuba pedagogy repertoire. His compositions include works published by several publishers in the United States, South America and Europe and have been performed extensively throughout the world. He has been a frequent traveler to Spain since 1993 and has promoted compositions by Spanish composers around the world. He is the only composer who has been commissioned six times by Spanish bands for Certamen competitions, with each band winning first prize. He has thirty-three compositions commercially recorded on Albany Records, MSR Classics, Crystal Records, Mark Records and others. He has been a guest lecturer, conductor and performer at many colleges, universities and music festivals in the United States, Canada, Japan, South America and Europe. He was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1954 and has Composition degrees from the Boston Conservatory and Indiana University. He now resides in Daytona Beach Shores, Florida.

The Pizzicato Polka was written in 1869 by brothers Josef and Johann Strauss (Jr), originally for plucked strings and glockenspiel. The polka is a lively dance in 2/4 time which originated in Bohemia but spread rapidly throughout Europe and beyond. The name is believed to derive from pulka, the Bohemian term for half-step, which describes the rapid shifts in weight from one foot to another. For dancing, a polka would be played at a consistent tempo but concert performances of the Pizzicato Polka traditionally involve significant rubato. Here, the decision is largely left up to the performers.This arrangement is designed for double reed duo of oboe and bassoon. The upper part can, however, also be played on flute. The piece has been classed as 'advanced intermediate' as, in order to perform it effectively, players require precise articulation and dexterous finger-work as well as sensitivity to the interplay between the two parts. Pizzicato Polka makes an enjoyable addition to either a recital programme or just to general repertoire.

The opera was part of Smetana’s aim to create a native Czech music after the conductor Johann von Herbeck commented that Czechs were incapable of making music of their own. Whilst he avoided the direct use of folksongs, Smetana did use numerous traditional Bohemian dance forms, such as the furiant and the polka, leading to music that was Czech in spirit.“Sold Brideâ€, a more accurate translation of the original Czech title (Prodaná nevÄ›sta), tells the story of two lovers (MaÅ™enka and Jenik) who want to marry despite MaÅ™enka’s father’s obligations for his daughter to marry the son of a wealthy landowner, Micha. Scheming, condition proposals and secret identities leads to a happy ending.The polka was not in the original 1866 version. A revision in October 1866 saw the addition of a gypsy dance near the start of act 2. But by the next performance in January 1869, this had been replaced by a polka. In June 1869, a new polka replaced the January version’s (as well as being moved to the end of act 1) and this is the one that we know and love today.This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. Arranged double wind quintet/bass The Slavonic Dances (Czech: Slovanské tance) are a series of 16 orchestral pieces composed by AntonÃn Dvořák in 1878 and 1886 and published in two sets as Op. 46 and Op. 72 respectively. Originally written for piano four hands, the Slavonic Dances were inspired by Johannes Brahms's own Hungarian Dances and were orchestrated at the request of Dvořák's publisher soon after composition. The pieces, lively and full of national character, were well received at the time and today are considered among the composer's most memorable works, occasionally making appearances in popular culture. Contrary to what the title might suggest, the dances are not so much inspired by Slavic folk music generally, but specifically by styles and forms from Bohemia. In these pieces, Dvořák never actually quotes folk melodies, but evokes their style and spirit by using traditional rhythmic patterns and structures in keeping with traditional folk dances.This is my arrangement of No 3 Polka from the first set Op.46 In Simrock's original edition of the piano duet, no. 3 was the D major Sousedská and no. 6 the A flat major Polka - an order apparently approved by Dvořák. Their positions were reversed in the orchestral version. The term polka referring to the dance is derived from the Czech word Polka meaning Polish woman (feminine form corresponding to Polák, a Pole). Czech cultural historian ÄŒenÄ›k ZÃbrt also attributes the term to the Czech word půlka (half), referring to both the half-tempo 2 4 and the half-jump step of the dance.[2] The word was widely introduced into the major European languages in the early 1840s.

Lyrics were added in 1934, subsequently gaining worldwide popularity during World War II as a drinking song. It was claimed many times that the song was written in the country where it had just become a hit. TIME Magazine wrote that Germans insisted it was an old Bavarian drinking song. Americans and British thought it was one of their own. Anyhow, they all sang it. Its actual composer was not widely known until after the war.

Phil Beaman #3925321. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844583). This fun piece is loosely based on a popular Russian folk polka. In 1853 Charles Czerny took this polka tune and created a piano etude as part of his set Amusement des Juenes Amateurs. I have taken some of his themes and adapted and arranged them for instrumental solo. I have assembled them into a Rondo form: Intro-A-B-A-C-A-D-A-Coda. It is an etude (study) to sharpen your playing of scales, arpeggios, melodic interval leaps, and various articulations. But it doesn't at all sound like an exercise because of the playful nature of the polka. This dramatic piece shows your technical accomplishments while delivering a crowd pleasing tune with great flourish.I have marked it as Intermediate in difficulty as a general average.
