As an adult I occasionally try to remember and or capture child-like experiences-maybe not so much the actual event, but the emotive atmosphere left from impressions long ago embedded in the psyche.Each movement of this work is based on spontaneous and uncalculated musical imagery of dreams and childhood reflections. I have deliberately avoided the professional composer’s bag of developmental tricks and worked for a more free flow of simple melodic ideas: they go wherever they want.Movement IInspired by the feelings I had growing up on Merritt Island Florida with my older sister Barbara. This music was a gift to her on the occasion of her 2004 marriage in Flemington New Jersey. It was originally scored for a brass quartet with which I performed. I have written three other brass quintets, and when I started thinking about this one (my fourth) this seemed like a logical choice for a first movement.Movement IIBased on a tune that came to me in a dream. It is dedicated to my wife Lois (we also married in 2004) and has a formal title of Wake Up To A Melody. I originally scored it for jazz band-more specifically for the excellent Salt Lake Alternative Jazz Orchestra, and it has recently been recorded by that group. I like the simplicity of this melody, and felt it would make a natural second movement for this brass quintet.Movement IIIThe third and most difficult movement is Tangoragrondo. It is literally a rondo with a turn-of-the century (19th-20th) ragtime melody/gallop occupying the A theme followed by a Tango (inspired by trips to Santiago Chile) for the B theme. The return to the rag (A theme) is then followed by a fantasy development (C area) with a return to to the rag (A theme) followed by a coda that recalls material from the first movement. The form is quite simple- ABACA-Coda.The material was originally developed as a movement for my double concerto Letting Midnight Out On Bail written for the Duehlmeier-Gritton piano duo and orchestra. It was recorded by the Warsaw Philharmonic and has been released on CD. A second version for two pianos has also been recorded and released by the Duehlmeier-Gritton piano duo. This orchestration for brass quintet will be the final resting place for this chaotic rondo.

Peet du Toit #958338. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1373864). Black Coffee is a song with music by Sonny Burke and words by Paul Francis Webster. The song was published in 1948.It's first two measures are nearly identical to Mary Lou Williams' 1938 piece What's Your Story Morning Glory, and both songs share melodic motifs drawn from blues (including a strong melodic emphasis on the flat third and flat seventh intervals, known as blue notes). Williams felt that Burke and Webster plagiarized her composition, and reportedly considered taking legal action over the matter. The two songs have significant melodic and rhythmic differences after the first two measures of their respective 'A' sections, and Black Coffee has a unique bridge section that has no parallel in Morning Glory. However, during her piano solo, Williams plays both the identical feel and harmonies that appear on Black Coffee, with dominant chords moving up and down by half steps in lieu of staying on the tonic chord. While not a carbon copy, Burke and Webster arguably picked sections of What's Your Story Morning Glory to string together to create a new song. Coincidentally, jazz trumpeter Paul Webster (no relation to lyricist Paul Francis Webster) was given co-writer credit for Morning Glory by Williams when she published her song in 1938.My dear friend, Sam Harrill, has added his percussion magic some years later, and I am re-posting this for greater effect. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.1251338). Domine, ne in Furore by Orlando di Lasso has been arranged for brass quintet by Russell McKinney. The music is taken from the seven Penitential Psalms that Lasso presented for exclusive use in Albrecht’s court shortly after he was appointed Maestro in 1563. The seven Penitential Psalms (6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, & 143 in Anglican numbering) have been in specific liturgical use from early in Western Christianity and therefore were a significant offer to his patron. He added another dimension to his versions by setting each psalm in a different church mode. The numbers in his collection indicates the mode of the setting, rather than the number of the psalm. This arrangement is of the first two sections of Penitential Psalm No. 3 which is Psalm 38 set in the Phrygian Mode.This arrangement is appropriate for moderately advanced performers and does not present any serious challenges for technique, range or endurance.

The 120 Melodious Etudes of Marco Bordogni were introduced in a three-volume set in 1928 by Trombonist Joannes Rochut and have been used for almost 100 years as pedagogical tools primarily in the low brass world. Their bel canto style, using beautiful tone and precise legato is their hallmark. Bass Trombonist Nir Fishkin has artfully arranged 10 Melodious Etudes for Brass Quintet, Volume 2 which are suitable for moderately advanced performers. Mr. Fishkin's arrangements imaginatively spread the melody around between the five parts. The Trumpet parts are in B-flat and the Trombone part is in bass clef.

The music was composed by the German immigrant Fredrik Pacius, with words by Johan Ludvig Runeberg, and with this music it was performed for the first time on 13 May 1848. The Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem of the United States of America. The lyrics come from Defence of Fort M'Henry, a poem written on September 14, 1814, by the 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships of the Royal Navy in Baltimore Harbor during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. Key was inspired by the large American flag, the Star-Spangled Banner, flying triumphantly above the fort during the American victory. Jari Villanueva earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University and a Master of Music from Kent State University, Ohio. He retired from the US Air Force Band in Washington DC where he spent 23 years as a trumpeter, bugler and staff arranger. He started his publishing company JV MUSIC in 1995. A student of Bill Holcombe, he continues writing for different ensembles and his arrangements are played by bands, brass ensembles and brass quintets all over the country.
