Heroic Music - A Suite of Twelve Marches (Complete) - Georg Philipp Telemann - Brass Quintet, Timpani - Intermediate - Digital Download.Heroic Music (or Heldenmusik) is a suite of twelve short marches and processionals, written by Georg Philipp Telemann in 1728, and is associated with various attributes of Heroism such as Dignity, Bravery and Alertness. All twelve movements have now been transcribed and arranged by Regis Bookshar to be played by Trumpet Quintets or Brass Quintets. Some of them have also been arranged for Sextets, Septets, Octets, Nonets and Brass Choirs. Some also include a Timpani. They can be purchased individually, or, if you prefer, as a complete set of all twelve at a huge saving.Any of these selections would be a wonderful addition to any music library, but this complete set of all twelve would be fabulous. They are perfectly suited to recitals and public performances, can stand alone as short interludes and are generally well received by audiences. They are suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing these arrangements. These selections are some of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. In the past, these compositions have often been performed by a soloist playing on a Piccolo Trumpet, but these new arrangements are Bb Trumpet friendly as one player stated after playing through them, making them much easier for most high school students.This selection, Heroic Music - A Suite of Twelve Marches (Complete), is arranged for a Brass Quintet with some selections having a Timpani. Kermit the Frog (his creator, Jim Henson, was behind the curtain) sings this song at the beginning of 1979's The Muppet Movie. It would be nominated for an Oscar for best original song, which subsequent history would indicate it should have won. The honor went to It Goes Like It Goes from the soundtrack of Norma Rae, which hasn't been heard since. The Rainbow Connection, meanwhile, has been covered by just about every singer and group in the universe, just short of the metal rockers. This arrangement is a challenge, although the parts are not technically difficult. I've used stairstep constructions throughout, so a quintet has to be tight and precise to maintain a steady tempo. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1458413). Basin Street sits on the edge of the French Quarter of New Orleans. A few years before this song was written, it served as the border of a red-light district known as Storyville. A city councilman named Sidney Story came up with the idea of creating a district to which prostitution would be limited, where it could be watched and regulated. So The District was created in 1897; it soon became known as Storyville, much to the chagrin of Councilman Story. During its 20-year official life, a visitor could buy a blue book for two bits that listed prostitutes alphabetically and by race and address. It was abolished in 1917 during World War I because it violated a rule that no house of prostitution could be within 5 miles of a military base. The Navy wanted its sailors pure of heart. It's also a place where jazz grew up. The bordellos hired musicians to entertain customers, who weren't particularly interested in the music. So the mostly black performers were free to experiment, to try new syncopated rhythms, to blend the sounds of African drums and plantation gospel to come up with what would become known as Dixieland music. Storyville (it would later mostly be razed for public housing, and still later begin to gentrify as property values rose) was where Spencer Williams wrote the song in 1928; Louis Armstrong, who spent some of his childhood nearby, first recorded it in 1928. American Cole Porter wrote it in 1935 while on a South Pacific cruise between Indonesia and Fiji aboard a British liner. Its roots are in a Latin dance from the French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. So it's somewhere between a minuet and a samba. The name of the dance, beguine, is Creole (probably pejorative) for white woman. The song was first performed in a Broadway musical called Jubilee. It didn't get much traction until Artie Shaw recorded it with his big band, in a purely swing mode, in 1938; it became the 3rd best-selling recording of the year and set off a new dance craze. Check out the drummer in the YouTube video of Shaw's band performing the song, with special attention to the drummer. It's a young and relatively quite subdued Buddy Rich. This arrangement, for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba, sticks pretty close to a Latin feel except for a swing break in the middle.If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to help.
