UPC: 038081331911.Jeep's Blues is one of many blues lines written by Ellington's star alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges. This one was for an Ellington small group recording under Hodges' name in the late 1930's. It's basically just the first 4 bars of the blues and then Hodges improvises the rest of the 12-bar form. Ellington's later big band arrangement is a very simple enlargement of that original 4-horn chart. There are 2 ensemble choruses, 2 solo choruses, 2 sax section choruses ending with a stride piano cadence. The opening is a loud and glorious ensemble; the closing is a soft and introspective sax section.

I arranged this piece at the request of my friends in the 2020-2021 Viking Jazz Ensemble at Wisconsin Lutheran High School. We hoped to do Blame it on the Boogie for that year's Prism concert, and they had asked my director to find an arrangement. He found one, but it was out of print. We were already playing an arrangement I did of Don't Start Now by Dua Lipa, so my friends turned to me and said, You can do one more, right? A year later, the 2021-2022 Jazz Ensemble performed this in front of 4 sold-out Prism concerts. This arrangement won first place in the WSMA 2022 Student Composition Project Arrangement Category- High School Division. This arrangement starts with the original melody and harmonies as presented on the original recording. The intro features bass and bari sax, the verse melody is passed to the saxophones, and the chorus is in the hands of the trumpets. I know. Scary. The second verse takes a turn, changing keys to the relative minor and changing feels into a jazz-latin groove. The melody starts in the trumpets and moves to the saxophones, while everyone else is comping on a montuno-based rhythm. The second chorus serves as a Breakdown section and transitions the piece into the solo section. The solo section is heavily inspired by the steel pan music of Trinidad and Tobago. The transition from the chorus into the solo section is stolen from Summersong, a piece of steel pan literature. The chord progression is ripped from the soca tune Pan in A Minor by Lord Kitchener. The backgrounds are traditional strum rhythms from the genre. The transition out of the solo section is a chromatic line also commonly used in steel pan music, especially pieces performed for the annual steel pan competition Panorama. The final chorus is presented in the same style and key as the original recording. Some slight changes are made in the backgrounds, and the entire band brings back the idea from the introduction to bring the piece to an end. This piece exists for one reason only: for you and the audience to have fun.

Sail Along Silvery Moon is a song written by Harry Tobias and Percy Wenrich in 1937 and originally performed by Bing Crosby, although covered later on by many artists including Andy Williams, Gene Autry and Slim Whitman. It reached #4 on the U.S. pop chart in 1937. in December 1957, saxophonist Billy Vaughn released an instrumental version of the song which went to #5 on the U.S. pop chart and #1 in Germany and in Canada. The following year, the song went #1 in Norway and made #4 in Australia. This arrangement for jazz ensemble follows the alto and tenor sax duet version by Vaughn, but makes these parts available for flute and clarinet if a doubling option is desired. There are short solos throughout, but nothing too complicated, it's a warm, nostalgic chart that would fit nicely into any programme.

After the cover, there are 21 pages of music: Ten pages for the full score; four pages for the group of blowing instruments (alto saxophone, B flat trumpet, and trombone); four pages for the piano and bass; and three pages for the two singers. Grouping the parts in this manner is natural and advantageous for this particular swing composition. These part groupings will help players in a group coordinate with each other from their group score. This is an excellent compromise between everyone working from the full score, and each player having a score with just the player’s individual part. The audio sample plays the full score.This product solves a problem that any composer of new jazz music faces: Unlike the popular standards, there aren’t any well-known and often-heard arrangements for a band to emulate. As the composer with only a lead sheet, I would have to convince your band to develop an arrangement from scratch, starting from nothing but the lead sheet! With so many attractive standard swing tunes to perform, a busy band may hesitate to put extra effort into an unknown tune. Problem solved! With this full arrangement of They Came Here to Dance, a band can better see and hear the tune’s full potential. It will be easier for a band to make any modifications to suit its particular mix of musicians and to better fit its style. With this arrangement, with written score, part group scores and audio sample, it will be as easy as working from the recording and score of a popular standard. All that’s missing from this arrangement is the percussion, because of the individuality of drummers. The band only needs a skilled jazz drummer to join in easily with this arrangement. The saxophone section needs flute, clarinet and bass clarinet, with only one alto and one tenor sax. The solo trumpet part is quite easy, spanning one octave; f-f'. The written-out jazz solo is not as difficult as it looks but nevertheless a bit more challenging. An easier solo can be written or improvised to be as difficult as the player dares, or given to someone else. The level is on the easier side of intermediate. Kids' Song was written in the mid- 1990s, apparently after listening to a lot of Isaac Hayes as an antidote to the then-ubiquitous Britpop and EDM. The style is a bit commercial and unashamedly schmaltzy - as you might find in a Broadway show from the time. The harmonies are like recently-poured cornflakes; slushy but slightly crunchy in places - and there's a funky middle section, as if you've mashed in a banana with maple syrup and Tabasco on it or something. Kids' Song was conceived as part of the obscure musical about the fortunes of a banjo-playing flapper from Burnley, Fifi Braithwaite, but dropped for stylistic reasons because the show was set in the late 1920s/ early 1930s. The sentiment is We're hungry. Why can't adults just be nice?.
