The Sea-Shells Waltz was written in 1880 as part of a musical challenge Innes posed to the great French cornetist, Jules Levy. They were both in New York performing as soloists with the legendary Gilmore band for some summer concerts. Levy would play a solo and Innes would follow with an even more elaborate one. One day Levy brought in a new solo in which he injected his own extemporaneous cadenza made up of everything he could do on the cornet. When his turn came to play, Innes also had something up his sleeve. He had written a brand new solo for the trombone, entitled The Sea-Shells Waltz with a minute and one-half cadenza.
This legendary musical duel brought forth a delightful solo that has been rediscovered and edited by Trombonist Chris Buckholz. The solo is about 8-minutes in length for advanced performers.

Fantasy for Trombone and Piano was written in 1981 as a Christmas present for Richard Raum while he and Elizabeth Raum were performing with the Regina Symphony. Ms. Raum is a highly respected Canadian composer with a catalog of outstanding compositions, many featuring brass instrument solos.
Fantasy for Trombone is dramatic, lyrical and very expressive, making it an ideal recital choice.
The work has gained immense popularity since its debut, having been performed and recorded by major artists worldwide. It is 6 1/2 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers.
Performers are Gordon Cherry, trombone and Joyce Cherry, piano from a live recital in 1986.

We try to influence what happens but usually, outside forces determine the direction of our lives. Sometimes it’s hard to distinguish between illusion and reality, and, in fact, often people much prefer illusion to reality. Mv. 1 - Illusion starts out with an obscure time signature and is constantly shifting tonalities so for a while, you aren’t quite sure where you are. Life is full of such deceptions.Mv. 2 - Fill the Wine Cup is a series of drinking songs with a lot of gayety and rollocking humour as the party gets more raucous, but eventually things get a little blurry and bombastic and the party winds down. The trombone, due to its ability to imitate drunken reeling with glissandos, is often cast in this role. M. 3 - Destiny seems to march on and on, with mankind hoping to control their future, but the implication is that fate is more powerful than one can control.M. 4 - The ultimate illusion: a Political Debate. The trombone starts out as the first candidate, and the saxophone is the other. The music is circus-like as befits many heated debates.Illusion was commissioned by Lucas Kaspar and JD Little. The original version was written for Alto Sax and Bass TromboneThe work of about 10 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers and may also be performed on a Trombone with an f-attachment.This work can be performed on a Trombone with an f-attachment and is appropriate for advanced performers.

The work is tonal, in three movements. The first movement, Moderato, is in sonata form largely in 6/8, with a lyrical trombone and sparkling piano moving between B and E-flat. The middle movement in A major labeled Andante sospirando has Eastern overtones, both rhythmic and tonal. In a sub-divided 3/4, the sound in the first half is a mystical Lydian, shifting the same melody to Ionian at the midpoint. A dramatic piano section punctuates both halves. The third movement, Allegro is a modified rondo form in a duple meter with an Americana sound. It brims with confidence and playfulness, alternating between C and G-flat, with sweeping themes and a driving, wilder midsection. Sonata No. 5 for Trombone and Piano is an outstanding work for contest, concert or recital. Difficulty level is medium-advanced. Performance time is 17:30. Member, ASCAP.

The Concertino is one of the featured works on Wolfe's beautiful new recording, REFLECTIONS. Here is what the composer says about his own work: The 'tritone' has been referred to as a dissonance for centuries, and has been called 'the devil in music'. This interval can be quite difficult to sing in tune, and can often grate on the ears, yet it can also have a great dramatic effect. It is tuly a 'devilish' little beast, and it is what inspired me. The devil's antagonist is surely an angel. So, imagine one's guardian angel on one shoulder, and 'Old Nick' on the other, battling for your conscience, and you will essentially have what this three movement piece is all about. Concertino is for very advanced performers and is about 15 minutes in length.

The F-major Romance is a tender, adagio cantabile movement full of beauty, requiring grace, poise and elegance to perform properly. It has been said that it could have been titled Song Without Words the music being so lyrical of character. 'Romance' may have been written as a slow movement to a Violin Concerto that was never completed. This arrangement by Gordon Cherry is a wonderful addition to the Trombone repertoire.Almost 10 minutes in length, this work for advanced performers will be a great addition to any recital.

David Fetter's brilliant new work Situation Update - Suite for Tenor Trombone and Piano is written in three contrasting movements totalling almost 11 minutes in length: 1. Swift 2. Longing 3. Exit Music Swift is marked Intense and is very rhythmic and angular. Longing is a beautiful lyrical movement marked Cantabile and Exit Music is marked Lively mixing chromatic, lyrical and syncopated segments, ending in a giant climax. Both the solo and accompaniment parts are written for advanced performers. The work's premier was performed in 2015 by retired Principal Trombonist of the Boston Symphony, Ronald Barron and accompanied at the Piano by composer Eric Ewazen. David's music allows the Trombonist to sing and soar in 3 contrasting movements filled with vivid colors, beautiful and expressive harmonies, and a wonderful flowing rhythmic energy. The outer movements crackle with energy, showcasing the amazing technique of soloist Ron Barron, as the melodic line shifts and changes with playful abandon, while the middle movement is heartfelt and lyrical, with beautiful melodic lines, supported by resonant, gorgeous harmonies. The work is a real tour de force and rightly deserves to take its place as a significant addition to the Trombone repertoire.
