Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8208-E). French, Russian.The Russian version, Kol' slaven, sets the poetry of M. M. Kheraskov (1733–1807), a Mason. The hymn was first associated with Freemasonry in Russia, but its popularity quickly grew. It became an unofficial national anthem until it was superseded by Lvov's “God save the Tsar.†Except during the Soviet period (1917–1991), Kol' slaven has been used in Russia at public gatherings and military ceremonies such as the christening of ships, lowering or raising of the flag, and at military funerals. Kol' slaven also became popular among émigré Russians and has been associated with Russian emigration in many countries. The singing of hymns with multiple verses in chorale style is not a part of Russian Orthodox worship. For this reason, Bortniansky's hymn is not considered liturgical in the Russian Church but is used mostly for secular ceremonies. The language of the hymn is Russian (although with several archaic words and word endings) rather than the language of Russian Orthodox worship, Church Slavonic. In Germany, the hymn is used not only in worship but also for military ceremonies and is occasionally sung as a prelude to the German national anthem. This scholarly performance edition includes extensive notes concerning the history of Bortniansky and this piece, performance notes, the editorial method of the English singing version, and a pronunciation guide for the Russian transliteration.Duration: 4:15.

Ezra, Nehemiah, Haggai and Malachi contain many passages that point out the sin of the people. Joshua, the current high priest, is pictured in one of Zechariah’s visions as wearing filthy apparel, desperately needing cleansing. Sheep in Bible times are grown more for their wool and milk, not so much for the slaughterhouse. Zechariah likens the leadership of Judah to shepherds and flock owners who are primarily concerned with selling meat. But there is a good shepherd who intervenes to lead the flock. He is mistreated by the owners and the shepherds and paid the price of a slave for his efforts. The good shepherd, casts the price on the floor for the potter.♫ Zechariah is looking ahead to a time when the religious leaders of Judah were short on compassion and the needs of people. Jesus called Himself the Good Shepherd. We see several parallel’s here in John 10. He called the religious leaders of His day, thieves and robbers, and predators. All rights reserved.Composed by Adrienne Inglis in 2014 and premiered in 2014 in Austin, Texas, by the Westminster Presbyterian Church Sanctuary Choir, In Heaven and on Earth for SATB chorus, flute, and clà rsach, draws inspiration from the tune Love is the Cause of my Mourning from The Caledonian Pocket Companion Book 1, p. 27. The piece opens with the tune altered to G mixolydian mode. As the word exploited appears, a sinister-sounding E flat enters the harmony. Open octaves between soprano and bass show the emptying, followed by a shift to E phrygian mode with the word slave. Several dissonances emerge as the narrative gets darker. The flute and clà rsach represent chaos or hell with an aleatoric interlude of extended techniques involving tongue rams, flutter tonguing, multiphonics, spoken syllables, and lever glissandi. The harp then joyfully proclaims the new tonality of G major in a fanfare to introduce the text of praise and exaltation. The original source tune returns harmonically restored to G major.

The original song dates back to the era of slavery when it was common practice to sell children of slaves away from their parents. In this new adaptation, the theme of separation or alienation (away from home, apart from one's community is viewed as universal and eternal. Everyone at some time feels like a motherless child. But as one expresses these feelings, one realizes a common bond with humanity. And one is no longer alone. Thus a more hopeful refrain is woven into the lyrics of the spiritual:Hold on. Hold on, We are together. And we are one.
