In 3rd verse I've changed a key by a whole tone up, and melody is now in soprano, while alto and baritone harmonize. Small intermezzo leads to 4th verse, and new key (whole tone upper). Composing soulful and expressive choral music has been the trademark of Alwin Michael Schronen for many years. .A hauntingly beautiful testimony to that is his arrangement of Sally Gardens for three-part choir (SAB) and piano. This traditional Irish folk song is based on one of the first love poems by William Butler Yeats. Its melody is characterized by simplicity and catchiness which are maintained by Schronen in a clean and natural manner in an easy-to-play choral setting for one male and two female voices singing in unison over long passages and are only seldom .devided into .three voices. Published by Denny Glasscock (A0.923199). A new and different rendition of a very old and beloved christian hymn. After an instrumental introduction, based on the refrain from the original hymn by Robert Lowry (1864), the newly composed verses begin with a musical theme meant to represent flowing water in a rippling river or stream. The original lyrics are adapted for all five verses and the refrain. The first verse is followed by the refrain, adapted from the original hymn. After that the refrain follows verses 3 and 5. The song ends on the final refrain, as the tempo slows and the flowing water theme ends. The vocals start out unison, but quickly divide out to SAB parts, all in a comfortable range. The melody in the verses shifts from soprano to alto, just before it gets too low for some sopranos. As you listen to the example provided, you will hear a string trio playing in the accompaniment, along with the piano. In order to expose my small church choir to the joys of a cappella singing, I wrote this SAB arrangement with parts that are very singable and easy to learn. The first verse is in octaves/unison to allow the performers to get a confident start before breaking into three parts in the refrain. Verse two features the baritones carrying the melody, accompanied by gentle harmony in the other two parts. The sopranos have the tune in the third verse, while the altos and baritones echo them with an underlying harmonized canon. The final verse has a simple soprano descant over the melody in the lower voices. After a strong build in the final refrain, the piece ends gently. This arrangement is a reachable challenge for a small a cappella choir.

In that year the song peaked on the Australian Singles Chart at number 72. But whilst its initial impact was somewhat less than stellar, it has gone on to become one of those songs that is part of the national psyche and is well-known by most Australians.In I still Call Australia Home Peter Allen wrote of his longing, no matter where in the World he might travel, to always return home to Australia, where he could be near his family and friends once again. The song is now regarded as a heart-warming expression of Australian patriotism and nostalgia for home.Its adoption by Qantas in the mid 1990s as the centrepiece of a long-running advertising campaign exposed a new generation of Australians to the song and greatly boosted its popularity. The Qantas campaign became one of the top Australian television campaigns of all time. It has linked together Australians living at home with those travelling or living overseas. Beginning with a number of well-known Australian musicians, the campaign went on to become associated with the Australian Girls Choir, the National Boys Choir and the Gondwana National Indigenous Children’s Choir.The song has featured in television programs, benefit concerts, sporting event ceremonies, and was included in the musical, The Boy From Oz, which starred Todd McKenney as Peter Allen in the Australian production and Hugh Jackman in the title role when the musical transferred to Broadway.This arrangement, with piano accompaniment, is available in SATB, SSA, SAB and 2-Part voicings.

This hauntingly beautiful and artistic arrangement of She's Like the Swallow contains the original, very old Newfoundland folk text very rarely used due to it's tragic story line. It is in the genre of beware the uncaring man common in folk songs of Europe which served to teach and warn young girls about the dangers of infatuation. This genre travelled to the United States and Canada in the 1700's. The expression apron low/apron high is a common thread in this genre and refers to being pregnant. She's Like the Swallow tells the tragic tale of a young girl who has fallen in love with, no doubt, a handsome but uncaring man. The story is told from each character's perspective plus an observer (narrator). The girl ultimately creates her own funeral bower of rose petals (ripping them off in desperation as she frantically runs through a garden), lies down on this 'bed of roses' and dies.  You have probably heard this song many times without ever knowing the true meaning due to significant verses left out. You will need a skilled accompanist! The accompaniment utilizes significant word painting throughout to highlight the haunting melody line. Word painting depicts the swallow, uncaring cruelty, desperation, blindly going in circles, anger, church bells and fading away/dying. The conductor is free to take liberties with the tempi and dynamics in order to create a unique interpretation that will resonate with their own choral group. This arrangement of She's Like the Swallow is an exceptional festival or competition piece and one that should be in the repertoire of every skilled women's choir!
