The Messe de Minuit was written around 1694 for the Jesuit church of Saint-Louis in Paris.What is remarkable about this mass is the use of ten French noëls (Christmas carols) in the composition. In the liturgy the birth of Christ is celebrated with three masses: the first during the night of December 24th, the second in the early morning of December 25th, and the third on the day itself. A special atmosphere surrounds the first of these masses on account of the midnight hour, and so CharpenÂtier gave special expression to the long observed practice in France of including popular Christmas carols in the Christmas liturgy by including them in the composition of his midnight mass. Although the Council of Trent had forbidden this kind of borrowing of secular melodies in masses in principle, long established customs were tolerated. Charpentier’s justly famous Messe de Minuit represents a perfect synthesis between the secular and liturgical, and between the popular and learned. Adapting the vast majority of the Latin mass to French noëls, the Messe de Minuit’s fresnhess and joyful spirit perfectly represent Advent. While Charpentier used ten different noël’s through the course of the work, the most serious moment of the mass, the statements of Christ’s incarnation, his mortal existence, and his death under Pontius Pilate, is given wholly original, appropriately sober music.

The Messe de Minuit was written around 1694 for the Jesuit church of Saint-Louis in Paris.What is remarkable about this mass is the use of ten French noëls (Christmas carols) in the composition. In the liturgy the birth of Christ is celebrated with three masses: the first during the night of December 24th, the second in the early morning of December 25th, and the third on the day itself. A special atmosphere surrounds the first of these masses on account of the midnight hour, and so CharpenÂtier gave special expression to the long observed practice in France of including popular Christmas carols in the Christmas liturgy by including them in the composition of his midnight mass. Although the Council of Trent had forbidden this kind of borrowing of secular melodies in masses in principle, long established customs were tolerated. Charpentier’s justly famous Messe de Minuit represents a perfect synthesis between the secular and liturgical, and between the popular and learned. Adapting the vast majority of the Latin mass to French noëls, the Messe de Minuit’s fresnhess and joyful spirit perfectly represent Advent. While Charpentier used ten different noël’s through the course of the work, the most serious moment of the mass, the statements of Christ’s incarnation, his mortal existence, and his death under Pontius Pilate, is given wholly original, appropriately sober music.

I composed Dissolved over the stiflingly hot and humid Sydney summer of 2018-2019. It’s all about finding relief from the heat by plunging your body into the sea at twilight. I went with some friends to Sydney’s Coogee Beach one late afternoon, just as the sun was setting. We parked in a side street and walked barefoot across the road, still warm from a full day of blazing sunlight, over the prickly grass, down the concrete steps onto the soft sand and into the ocean. The feeling of being cleansed by this salt water was so strong, I felt compelled to write a song about it. Whilst my school peers in the late 80s and early 90s were collecting tapes for their VHS video recorders, my family were collecting hi-fidelity CD recordings of classical masterworks. Three of these CDs stick in my mind; a period instrument performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons performed by Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert; a recording of the 1812 overture which boasted Real Cannons (and also warned listeners against setting the volume too high because it might damage the equipment!); and A feather on the breath of God, an album of works by Hildegard performed by Gothic Voices with soloist Emma Kirkby. Thus began my life long love affair with the life and works of Hildegard. I have been performing this particular Hildegard chant O Virtus Sapientiae in solo piano recitals since around 2014. Basically, I have been freely improvising on it, so it’s different each time. Some ideas formed during those improvisations which have really stuck in my brain. I’ve transferred some of these into this a cappella work.
