The song is also known as “O Waly, Waly†which means something like “woe is meâ€. For such an old song, it is not surprising that there are many variations of the lyrics. An early version of the modern lyrics was consolidated by the British folksong collector Cecil Sharp in 1906, using multiple older sources in southern England. There are many sets of lyrics with different story-lines. This was because in the past, performers would often create new lyrics for the song. This melody has attracted an entire family of lyrics many of which bear little relationship to each other. The words used in this choral arrangement reflect the popular lyrics used during the twentieth century. The song was arranged for voice and piano in 1948 by British composer Benjamin Britten but in more recent times, was made popular by many folk singers notably The Seekers, Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. It has become one of the most popular folk songs today, largely because of its beautiful tune. But as with the lyrics, there are many variations on the melody with the result that no single variation can be considered the “correct†one.This SAB arrangement by Colin Kirkpatrick is ideal for high school or college choir. Each section of the choir as the melody line at some point and there are attractive and evocative counter-melodies. In the soprano part (which has one brief divisi section), the highest not is G5 which appears only once and is approached safely. The highest note in the alto part is C5 (in the middle of the treble staff). The baritone part lies between A flart 2 and D 3 (just above the staff) and well within the normal choral range. The piano part is an integral part of the arrangement and therefore essential. The music begins in E flat and modulates to C major. Running at just over three minutes, the work is sure to be popular with choir and audiences alike.

Here’s a new SSA choir arrangement of that ever-popular American folksong Shenandoah.  The original song probably has its origins among the French Canadians who traded with Native Americans around the Great Lakes during the sixteenth century. These traders exchanged weapons and tools for animal furs, especially beaver pelts. Paddling their canoes along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers the traders were well-known for their singing. However, as most of the traders were illiterate, the songs were never written down and went through numerous changes over the years and centuries. In most versions of the song, the lyrics tell of a seafarer, possibly a canoeing fur-trader, who was in love with the daughter of Shenandoah, a Native American Chief who lived in what is now the state of Virginia. Shenandoah was a real person: evidently an individual of commanding presence who lived for over a hundred years. Shenandoah became one of the most popular capstan shanties, a slow song which set a manageable pace for the crew in a heavy and lengthy task. Most versions of the song have a similar couplet at the end of each verse. In some transcriptions, the melody is written out entirely in 4/4 time; others use triple time and some arrangements use a mixture of both. In this version, the lyrics have been selected from different versions of the song. This SSA arrangement for choir and piano is conceived for boy choir or girl choir and within easy technical reach of amateur or school choirs. The top soprano note is high F on the treble staff and the other parts fall well within the usual choral range. Each section of the choir takes the melody at some point. With a running time of 04:00 this piece is enjoyable to sing and hear. It’s an essential addition to your choir’s repertoire.

After an instrumental introduction, based on the refrain from the original hymn by Robert Lowry (1864), the newly composed verses begin with a musical theme meant to represent flowing water in a rippling river or stream. The original lyrics are adapted for all five verses and the refrain. The first verse is followed by the refrain, adapted from the original hymn. After that the refrain follows verses 3 and 5. The song ends on the final refrain, as the tempo slows and the flowing water theme ends. The vocals start out unison, but quickly divide out to SAB parts, all in a comfortable range. The melody in the verses shifts from soprano to alto, just before it gets too low for some sopranos. However altos or baritones could probably sing the melody, as the highest notes are likely still contained within their upper range. Thus the piece could be performed as a solo for altos or baritones. Though the melody shifts, a bit, from soprano to alto, it is easily heard in continuity. Thus, intuitively, the audience, or congregation, will clearly hear the melody, and be easily able to sing along. The score provided here, contains the SAB parts and piano (with chord symbols). As you listen to the example provided, you will hear a string trio playing in the accompaniment, along with the piano. The violin, viola and violoncello adds a nice dimension to the accompaniment sound. An accompaniment track is also available under item no. S0.870603. This lovely folksong is thought to have come from Scotland, though similar versions have been recorded in other parts of Britain. The song is also known as “O Waly, Waly†(it rhymes with daily) which means something like “woe is meâ€. For such an old song, it is not surprising that there are many variations of the lyrics. There are many sets of lyrics with different story-lines. This was because performers would often create new lyrics for the song. This melody has attracted a family of lyrics many of which bear little relationship to each other. The words used in this choral arrangement reflect the popular lyrics used during the twentieth century. The song was made popular by many folk singers notably Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. It has become one of the most popular folk songs today, largely because of its beautiful tune. But as with the lyrics, there are many variations on the melody with the result that no single variation can be considered the “correct†one.This SAT arrangement by Colin Kirkpatrick is ideal for school choir, amateur choir or college choir especially when there are few male voices. Each section of the choir as the melody line at some point and there are attractive and evocative counter-melodies. It has been used in film and television programs and known to almost everyone in Britain. Skye (also known as “The Isle of Skyeâ€) is the largest island of the Inner Hebrides. With an area of about 640 square miles, the island is about sixty miles long and lies close to the Scottish mainland.  The boat in the song (“Speed bonny boatâ€) refers to a small sailing ship that in 1746 “carried the lad who was born to be king†to the Isle of Skye. The lad in question was Prince Charles Edward Stuart known affectionately as “Bonnie Prince Charlie.†The song also refers to the Battle of Culloden of April 1746, the last ever battle on British soil, fought between the British Army and the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie.  In June 1746 and disguised as a maid-servant, Charles was secretly transported from the Hebridean island of Benbecula to the more southerly Isle of Skye. This is the event to which the song refers. The Skye Boat Song has its roots in a traditional Gaelic melody. The lyrics in this arrangement are the familiar ones written in the 1870s by Sir Harold Edwin Boulton. This is an easy SSA arrangement, with all vocal parts well within range and difficult leaps avoided. There are no divisi sections or solos, though can obviously create solos if you want. The keyboard part also avoids technical hurdles. Your singers will surely enjoy this joyful melody, with its contrasting verse and attractive counter-melodies. Vocal ranges are Soprano 1: D4 – D5; Soprano 2: D4 - D5; Alto: G3 - D5.
