Bach: French Suite No. 5, BWV 816, for Saxophone Quartet
Saxophone Quartet: 4 saxophones
Saxophone Quartet,Woodwind Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Te…
(+)
Saxophone Quartet,Woodwind Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1406650 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Historic,Standards. 59 pages. Jmsgu3 #989408. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1406650). The importance of Bach's French Suites lies in their unique blend of French and Italian styles despite the misleading title. These suites, composed between 1722 and 1725 for the clavier, showcase Bach's mastery in stylizing traditional dances like allemandes, courantes, sarabandes, and gigues. While named French Suites by later sources like Johann Nikolaus Forkel, they follow Italian conventions with some French influences. The suites offer a rich musical experience, bridging different European styles and serving as valuable teaching pieces. Despite the misleading title, Bach's French Suites are a testament to his compositional genius and continue to be cherished by musicians and audiences alike. The history behind Bach's French Suites is intertwined with a bittersweet period in Bach's life. In May 1720, Bach embarked on a trip, leaving his wife, Maria Barbara, and four children. Tragically, upon his return, he discovered that Maria Barbara had passed away. This loss led to a significant change in Bach's personal life as he became a single father mourning his wife. Despite this tragedy, Bach found love again with Anna Magdalena Wülcken, whom he married. As a gesture of affection and to cultivate her musical skills, Bach composed music for Anna Magdalena, including what would later become the French Suites. These suites were likely performed at court and reflected the couple's intimate musical companionship. The French Suites were not published during Bach's lifetime, possibly because he did not deem it challenging enough. Today, these suites offer an accessible path to Bach's music and are cherished for their stylized dance movements inspired by French and Italian forms.

These suites were likely performed at court and reflected the couple's intimate musical companionship. The French Suites were not published during Bach's lifetime, possibly because he did not deem it challenging enough. Baroque,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Historic,Standards. 25 pages. Jmsgu3 #987854. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1404790).

Arranged by Stephen Davies. Baroque. 49 pages. Stephen Davies #3480611. Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891915). The final composition of J.S.Bach is surprisingly triumphant, despite his demise just after bar 239. It's also a matter of scholarly conjecture that Bach wrote 'The Art of Fugue' for the keyboard, as some will argue that certain Contrapunctii (?!) are almost impossible to play, bearing in mind that the sustain pedal had yet to be invented. And thus, the most credible path would be that Bach wrote them as A) Academic exercises for study or B) To be played by a suitable ensemble. I'm going with the latter obviously! I include Donald Tovey's conclusion to the work, its brilliance is noted the world over, but surely not what Bach intended, but damn close! This Saxophone version is particularly LOUD!!, so, go make some noise!!

Saxophone Quartet,Woodwind Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1124310 Composed by Edward Elgar. Arranged by Robert Luke Thompson. 19th Century,Chamber,Classical,Film/TV,Patriotic. 10 pages. Monkspath Music #725064. Published by Monkspath Music (A0.1124310). Sir Edward Elgar’s compositional output was prolific, with many well-known pieces, including the Pomp & Circumstance marches, Dream of Gerontius, and of course, the Engima Variations. Elgar’s legacy has been widely debated, but there is no doubt of his influence on ‘English’ music and composers such as Ralph Vaughan Williams, but also further afield, on composers as diverse as Richard Strauss, Jean Sibelius, and Igor Stravinsky. Along with a central theme woven and varied throughout the work, each movement of Engima Variations is also a musical illustration, based on a family member or close friend of Elgar, and indeed Elgar himself. He dedicated the work “to my friends pictured withinâ€. “Nimrod†is the name given to the ninth movement, based on Elgar’s editor and publisher, Augustus J, Jaeger. Musically, there is an obvious hint at the 2nd movement of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata Pathetique, but beyond this there are beautiful legato lines spread across the whole ensemble and a wide variety of timbral, dynamic, and tempo colourations. “Nimrod†has become a popular piece as a standalone item – often featuring in funerals, memorial services, and other solemn events such as Remembrance Sunday. Hans Zimmer also adapts the piece for use in the score for the 2017 film Dunkirk, and has become a standard tune to represent stoic ‘Britishness’.
