New for the 2019 Christmas Season, here is a Noël (a set of variations of a type popular in the French Baroque) on a somewhat less well known Advent Carol for manuals only. Venez, divin Messie (O Come Divine Messiah) is an anonymous 16th century tune to which Abbé Simon-Joseph Pellegrin added the words in the early 18th century. It is a charming melody and this new setting will provide organists with a little something beyond the ordinary Advent/Christmas fare.Originally conceived for harpsichord, this piece easily makes the transition to organ manuals. Performance time is between 9 and 10 minutes depending largely on the acoustics of the room. The attached audio file will tell you everything there is to say about the music. You will hear the entire tune plus the beginning and ending of each variation.

It's well-known and loved and is played across the world in pubs, on stage and at Irish music sessions. It is a great jig for beginners and experts alike.History: The title of this jig refers to the fair of the same name that was held in Donnybrook, Dublin. The fair was held from the 13th century up until the 1850’s and is also a slang term for a brawl or riot. In 1204, a license was granted to the corporation of Dublin by King John of England to hold an annual eight-day fair in Donnybrook. In 1252, the duration of the fair was extended to fifteen days. Over the subsequent centuries, the terms of holding the fair continued to change until it was decided in the 18th century that the fair would be held on the 26th of August on Donnybrook Green for a full fortnight. Published by Oliver Waterman (A0.1017653). My Fugue Study in Em, is a sneak peak into a collection of studies for guitar that I've composed called Classically Different. They are not meant for the beginner student, but they are pedagogical. They are the result of imagining what it would have been like to have the 6 string guitar a common place instrument during the 18th century. Would there have been powerhouse guitarist/composers like Sor and Giuliani of the 19th century? Would they have performed and composed like Bach Vivaldi and Weiss? Would Bach have composed a suite for it? I originally composed this Fugue for keyboard in my counterpoint class. As I started to arrange it for guitar and learn to play it, I realized that I was running into similar problems that guitarists have experienced since Tarrega first started transcribing Bach. I coincidentally rewrote a number of sequences and entrances of the subject to make it more guitar logical. There are still leaps by a 7th sprinkled in to continue a low melody an octave higher due to the range limitations of the 6 string guitar. I wonder if perhaps this would have been a useful mechanism for the hypothetical guitarists of the 18th century, or if they would have just composed for the instruments range. It is quite apparent to me that a great deal of Baroque music arranged for guitar makes great use of this without degradation to the original line. I use both tablature and standard notation for my scores with perhaps an overabundance of fingerings. I want to make it as easy as possible to understand the music for as many players as possible. .

We credit Isaac Watts for helping to popularize “hymns†over “Psalms†in Protestant churches in the 18th Century. The texts of “Psalms†came directly from the Bible; “hymns†were more interpretive and reflective. Whether to allow the use of hymns rather than Psalms in church was a controversial topic of the 17th and 18th centuries! ♫ Watts used Psalm 96 and 98 with Genesis 3 to create the lyrics of Joy to the World. For over a hundred years, the lyrics were sung to various Psalm tunes. ♫ Lowell Mason published our current version with the melody ANTIOCH in 1848. He attributed the melody to George Frederick Handel by Lowell. We can find several fragments of this melody in Handel’s music, there is no complete statement of the melody in Handel. And so ANTIOCH is now attributed to Mason. ♫ The Hallelujah Chorus serves as the introduction and the conclusion of this arrangement. It was first published within Messiah, an oratorio by George Frederick Handel in 1741. The lyrics were created by Charles Jennens from the King James Bible. ♫ “The Lord is come†is the present perfect tense. It seems archaic, yet the present perfect tense has a distinct meaning. It points to a current action that is sustained. It isn’t just that Christ came in the past.
