Just Around the Riverbend from Pocahontas is part of a series of Disney piano solo arrangements for late beginner / grade 1.  Everyone can benefit by learning pieces they recognise, but in the early stages of learning, this can sometimes prove to be a challenge too far.  If the piece is too far outside the ability level of the student, frustration and self-doubt can creep in.The arrangements in this series concentrate on building connections between how the music looks, how it feels, and what it sounds like. To simplify learning, the arrangements are notated at half speed (where needed), do not require any use of sharps or flats, and are harmonised using a 5 - note hand position in the left hand.Short introductions have been added to highlight the hand position changes used in the song.  These give students the opportunity to build their confidence by navigating the changes of hand positions before encountering them in the recognisable part of the song.Catherine lives in a small rural village in Shropshire, England and has over 25 years experience teaching piano. Published by Brian Strohmetz (A0.1280306). Around the Bend is a journey of tranquility, adventure, and discovery down a section of the Monocacy Creek in Bethlehem, PA. The first section of the music that appears throughout the piece is a simple melody that is reminiscent of a simple art song. It represents the river flowing along peacefully on a beautiful day. Occasionally, we come across an area where the water hits a small obstacle that causes the water to change its path and speed. We hear this as violent 16th note interruptions in the music. The river then returns to its natural flow and pace. Further along we encounter a small waterfall area with rapids and obstacles. The music cascades and has a rhythmic drive representing the rapids and the swift moving waters. After we have traversed the rapids, we return to the calm waters of the river as it continuously flows peacefully. The next portion of our journey is inspired by a specific and unique section of the Monocacy, where we find the hidden ivy. Trees surround the creek. When looking into them, at a certain angle, you will find a tree covered in ivy hidden amongst the other trees. When we reach this point in our journey, the music starts off mysteriously as though looking through the trees. When we find the hidden ivy, we are greeted by a majestic melody that reflects this hidden beauty. The piano plays a rising arpeggio repeatedly, reflecting the ivy’s goal to grow higher and closer to the sky. Once we pass the ivy, we return to the peacefully flowing river. We approach a bend in the river that we cannot see beyond. There is a bit of trepidation, but as we start to go around the bend, everything ends peacefully, and we know everything will be fine. The river will keep moving and we will survive. For Cello & Piano.

This is a funky straight up blues tune that I've had for a while. Built around a steady, mechanical riff laid out in the bass guitar and guitar, this work features plenty of soli playing throughout the different sections. The smeary main theme, introduced by alto and bari sax in unison, is later picked up by the rest of the section as well as the trumpets in the playout at the end. The saxophones in particular are strongly encouraged to make the most out of the bends, scoops and dips as indicated. There is an open solo chorus for a guitar solo. This tune has gone by many names in my mind over the years (Texas Trout, Rudie-Nudie Blues, I Think Your Dog Has Worms), but have at last settled on Blues Against The Machine for the main title, as I think this captures the contrast between the bluesy melody with the machine-like riff.

This is my slightly more complex arrangement of Leaves from the Vine from the beloved animated series Avatar: the Last Airbender, as well as the more recent Netflix live-action adaptation by the same name. It is appropriate for intermediate harpists working with an instrument as small as 26 strings, ranging from the C below middle C to the third G above Middle C (though it can obviously also be played on a larger harp, as well). It is written in the key of B-flat Major with no accidentals or lever changes. As such, it could work on an instrument model without levers, so long as the instrument is tuned with Bs and Es flat. My own instrument is a Harpsicle Fullsicle Harp. But I believe it could also work, with one or two very minor modifications, on a Harp-E, some of the Roosebeck Pakistani harp models (though check your range to be sure), Dusty Strings Ravenna 26, or Musicmakers Sonnet 29.The intro, outro, and transitions of the song weave in a medley of other themes from Avatar: The Last Airbender, including excerpts from The Avatar's Love, Four Seasons, and the main title theme. The core of the arrangement, however, centers around on variations of Leaves from the Vine.I also have a simplified, beginner-appropriate arrangement of this piece published seperately. The Old Palmer Song is a favourite Australian folk song that is meant to be sung in a rollicking style that reflects the excitement and anticipation of hardy Australian colonials setting out in search of gold. Following hard on the heels of the great California gold rushes (1848 – 1855) came the discovery of payable quantities of gold in Australia. The first gold rush in Australia began in New South Wales in May 1851 after prospector Edward Hargraves discovered gold near Orange, at a site he called Ophir. Other discoveries quickly followed, including those at Ballarat and Bendigo in the colony of Victoria. Then came Rosewood and Gympie (1867) in Queensland; the Gawler region in South Australia in 1868; and Halls Creek (1885), Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie (1893) in Western Australia. One of Australia’s richest alluvial goldfields was that of the Palmer River in far north Queensland. The rush to the Palmer began in 1873 and lasted for about three years. The goldfields were nearly 100 miles inland from the small coastal settlement of Cooktown and the early prospectors had a hard time of it just getting to the field. Leaving Cooktown they crossed the coastal mangroves, then on through dense tropical rainforest, into the more open eucalypt forest beyond and then across the dry, inhospitable and rugged country of the hinterland dissected by wide and deep rivers. And always there was the risk of meeting with fierce resistance from the Aborigines whose tribal land they were travelling through. At the height of the rush there were around 35,000 prospectors on the Palmer (including a great many Chinese). By the time the rush was over, the Palmer had yielded over 100 tons of gold! The Old Palmer Song is set to the tune of Ten Thousand Miles Away, a shore ballad/sea shanty that probably originated in Ireland in the early 19th Century.

Abendlied (Evening Song) is from a cycle of 12 piano duets, Op. 85, written in 1849, a particularly prolific year of composition for Schumann. The great Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim took the final number, consisting merely of a completely unpianistic one-handed melody with chordal accompaniment for two hands, and arranged it for violin, oboe or flute. The present arrangement expands that list of instruments to include the Soprano Saxophone, in its infancy at the time the piece was composed. An alternate part for Alto Saxophone is also included. The soaring, free melody is reminiscent of Schumann’s Manfred music, written around the same time. This piece is very demanding in terms of breath control and phrasing.
