A Song of Winter—Snowmen & Icicles
PhyllisAvidan Louke
Length: 6:45
Difficulty: 3 to 3+

Evocative of a cold and windy dayin winter, A Song of Winter explores the contrasts between thesmoothness and roundness of a snowman and the hardness and jaggedness oficicles.

Beginning with a winter stormwith wind and swirling snow, the wind calms, and the building of a snowmanbegins with the rolling of a snowball. The rolling forms the biggest ball of the snowman (represented by thebass and alto flutes), which is briefly interrupted by a playful snowballfight. The flutes continue the melodyfor the rolling of the second ball of the snowman, followed by the piccolorepresenting the rolling of the smallest ball (the head of the snowman). The melody is smooth and round in a lilting I time.

With the snowman complete, thewind and swirling snow return to lead into the Icicles section. The jaggedness of the icicles is representedby the jaggedness of syncopation in a marcato style with the melody skippinglarger intervals than the Snowmen melody. Visually, the score shows the jagged shape ofthe icicles. Double-tongued ascendingand descending lines, add to hard and brittle feeling of the icicles, as wellas to the shape of the melody. Thepiccolo adds the glistening, shimmering effect of sunlight reflecting off the icicles. Eventually, fragments of the Snowmenmelody are interspersed with the Icicles, followed by a final windstorm, which calms at the end of the piece.

Christmas
Winter
Winter Holidays
Stormy
Concert
Original Composition

The Twelve Days Of Christmas

1 Piano,4 Hands,Piano Duet - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1114900 By John Denver. By Traditional English Carol. Arranged by Wendy Hellmann. Children,Christmas,Holiday,Traditional. Score. 7 pages. Gwendolyn Hellmann #716741. Published by Gwendolyn Hellmann (A0.1114900). This beloved holiday classic is arranged with the early beginner in mind and is perfectly suitable for students nearing the end of the Bastien Primer B or Alfred Primer C method series. Piano Primo is written in Middle C Position, uses eighth notes, and is played one octave higher than written throughout the piece. There are also several spots where the left hand crosses over the right hand to reach a note that is outside of Middle C Position. Notes are also slightly enlarged for easier reading. Piano Secondo is ideal for a teacher or intermediate student who is comfortable with reading both hands in bass clef. The harmony changes ever so slightly with each iteration. Only 5 days are written here, but it would be easy to add repeated bars to get through all 12 days. Either way, this makes for a great piece for a young student at a winter recital! The PDF download contains both a full score and a set of individual parts - Piano Primo and Piano Secondo. Both parts are formatted to avoid any page turns.

Harp - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.797493 Composed by Carol Wood. Celtic,Halloween,Holiday,New Age,Spiritual. Score. 22 pages. Afghan Press Music for the Harp #4886961. Published by Afghan Press Music for the Harp (A0.797493). While all eight of these Celtic holidays may not be truly ancient, several of them certainly are; some, like Samhain, have had Christianizing veils cast over them but have kept many of the pre-Christian customs associated with their celebration. Interested harpists will find a wealth of available information about these holidays, their names, and their customs. Imbolc, February 1st or 2nd, is also the Feast of St. Bridget or Brigid and is associated with the ancient goddess of that name in Celtic mythology.Ostara is the name sometimes given to the neo-Celtic celebration of the Spring Equinox. This piece depicts the dawn of the day and of the year. Beltaine, the joyous celebration of spring’s warmth and wealth of flowers and new greenery, occurs on the first day of May. The longest day of the year and the shortest night mark the Summer Solstice-Midsummer. Since long before Shakespeare’s funny and lyrical play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Summer Solstice has been associated with magic.Lughnasadh, on August 1st, is the festival of the first harvest. A version of the name of this festival survives in Manx and Scots Gaelic as well as in Irish Gaelic, and the name itself derives from Lugh, one of the most important Celtic godsMabon marks the Autumn Equinox and the end of summer; for me, it is a wistful moment of the year-extremely beautiful yet transitory. Samhain is one of the most significant celebrations in the Celtic year- the word itself means the end of summer, the beginning of the dark part of the year. It survives even in non-Celtic countries as Halloween, thanks to its adoption into the Christian calendar as All Hallows’ Eve. It is said to be the time when the veils between this world and the next are at their most thin. The Winter Solstice is marked in many European cultures as a time for celebrating the birth of the new light and a time for decorating with evergreens like holly. For The Holly King, modal and traditional versions of the carol The Holly and the Ivy, were used because of the lyrics’ references to the rising of the sun, and the running of the deer.

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.632278 Composed by Fishel Pustilnik. Arranged by Fishel Pustilnik. Children,Film/TV,Jazz,Pop. Score. 2 pages. F & N Enterprise #2831661. Published by F & N Enterprise (A0.632278). Piano piece from famous Volume 5 of Jazz & Pop Piano Paradise. The composition is easy to read, fun to play and sound professional when performed. Arranged by Fishel Pustilnik, very well known as Composer/Publisher. His books Jazz & Pop Piano Paradise (Volumes 1-5) have become a commercial success and a hit with music teachers and students in Canada. (Thousands books already sold in Canada). They are also starting to enter the US, Brazil, Norway, Russia, Holland, Israel, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Greece, Latvia and UK markets. This is a wonderful new publication. These pieces offer much appeal for the young pianist and excellent choice for a supplementary book for students from Grade 3 to 8. Lore Ruschiensky, Editor, (from review in The Canadian Music Teacher) Yesterday I spent at least two pleasure filled hours playing through your imaginatively inventive compositions. Congratulations! I trust students will decide to program your well crafted and entertaining works on recitals and examinations. Review from Dr. Jack Behrens, B.Sc. (Julliard), PH.D (Harvard), Director of Academic Studies, The Glenn Gould School I liked this book the best so far. Great work! You have a gift for melody and your arrangements are very playable. Congratulations on the 3rd Volume. Mark Carlstein, Hal Leonard, Keyboard Publications.

Christian,Christmas,Holiday,Religious. 17 pages. Connie Boss #915473. Published by Connie Boss (A0.1327432). This lovely lullaby is an Austrian carol from the 1800's. I built from the original by adding extra lyrics and changing up the melody slightly to the end of each verse. The lyrics are from We Three Kings, Silent Night and What Child is This. Each additional lyric ties into the verses of the song and adds an extension to the verse. This version has the verses broken up between the voices until the last verse. There are no repeat endings - it plays all the way through. This is for SATB quartet or choir and piano. Any questions or requests, email cdboss@cvalley.netLyrics:Still, still, stillOne can hear the falling snowFor all is hushedThe world is sleepingHoly Star its vigil keepingStill, still, stillOne can hear the falling snowO star of wonder, star of nightO star with royal beauty brightStill, still, stillOne can hear the falling snowSleep, sleep, sleep'Tis the eve of our Savior’s birthThe night is peaceful all around youClose your eyesLet sleep surround youSleep, sleep, sleep'Tis the eve of our Savior’s birthRound yon virgin, mother and childHoly infant tender and mildSleep, sleep, sleep'Tis the eve of our Savior’s birthDream, dream, dreamOf the joyous day to comeWhile guardian angels without numberWatch you as you sweetly slumberDream, dream, dreamOf the joyous day to comeWhat child is this who laid to restOn mary’s lap is sound asleepDream, dream, dreamOf the joyous day to comeStill, still, still'Tis the eve of our Savior’s birth.

Holiday Bolero for Keyboard Percussion
Percussion Ensemble

Percussion Ensemble - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.935380 Arranged by Pharaoh Publications. Christian,Christmas,Contemporary,Spiritual. Score and parts. 14 pages. Pharaoh Publications #5212781. Published by Pharaoh Publications (A0.935380). Holiday Bolero for keyboard percussion arr. by Dan Heslink This arrangement is available in two versions, a quintet for xylophone and four marimbas, and a percussion ensemble octet for orchestra bells, vibes, 3 marimbas, snare drum, timpani and multiple percussion. These comments refer to the mallet quintet arrangement. While the term Bolero can be applied to a variety of slow-tempo Latin dances, for most orchestral performers the title will evoke the stirring rhythms of Ravel’s famous Bolero. Similarities include the driving 3/4 bolero rhythm, the building of tension over one long-range crescendo, and the climactic conclusion. The pitch content is based on O Holy Night, the well-known Christmas carol composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847. The difficulty level in terms of executing notes and rhythms is medium-easy. At the same time, the dynamic planning and control of the crescendo requires considerable musical judgment. All of the keyboard parts require only two mallets; some passages unfold as double stops. Mallets for the marimbas should be chosen to maximize the blend of individual parts into a unified chord. There are no key changes, or mallet and hand independence. Holiday Bolero is sure to be an audience pleaser during a winter concert, especially close to Christmas. It would serve equally well in a percussion recital or a church service. In church this work would be appropriate as special music or as an offertory. Duration is 2:52. The arranger, Dan Heslink, can be contacted at dan@dheslink.com.

Kingdom Coming (The Year of Jubilo)

Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.808688 Composed by Henry Clay Work (1832-1884). Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Children,Folk,Holiday,Patriotic. Score and parts. 31 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #4111581. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808688). Henry Clay Work, Civil War era song writer and abolitionist, composed Kingdom Coming in 1862. Chicago’s Root & Cady published it in April of that year, Christy’s Minstrels premiered it and it became enormously popular. The lyrics to Kingdom Coming, also known as The Year of Jubilo, were written as though slaves in the Confederacy were celebrating their upcoming freedom. However, the song was actually released eight months before President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Interestingly, Kingdom Coming also gained popularity in the South. A Southern edition was published in August in 1864, and the song remained a favorite in the former Confederacy for some years. Kingdom Coming has been used as theme or background music in a number of film, television and radio settings. Almost certainly its most popular iteration in modern times was the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra’s 1952 recording under the title Doodletown Fifers. This arrangement is a show-off piece for each member of the quintet. It moves along at a brisk pace of about 108, begins in the key of C and changes to A-flat, then B-flat. The first time through the melody, all instruments perform ensemble. Each succeeding repetition features an instrumentalist, starting with tuba and working up to Trumpet 1. The piece ends with another ensemble version. There are no exceptionally out-of-normal-playing-range notes: Trumpets 1 and 2 both play their B-flat below the scale several times, and Trumpet 2 plays G below the scale; Horn in F also plays its G below the scale; Trombone’s range is G at the bottom of the scale to D above the scale; Tuba’s lowest note is A-flat below the scale. Trumpet 1 will probably triple tongue its repetition of the melody, and some triple tonguing may be called for near the end of the piece for Trumpets 1 and 2 and Trombone. This arrangement was completed in 2018, and performance time runs just under 4 minutes. The arranger, Les Smith, would be very interested in your comments; contact him at lessmith@ufl.edu. Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1114491 Composed by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Arranged by Steven Nunes. 19th Century,Christmas,Classical,Holiday,Romantic Period. 194 pages. Nagamon Publications #716375. Published by Nagamon Publications (A0.1114491). Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was a Russian composer of the Romantic period. He was the first Russian composer whose music would make a lasting impression internationally. He wrote some of the most popular concert and theatrical music in the current classical repertoire, including the ballets Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, the 1812 Overture, his First Piano Concerto, Violin Concerto, the Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy, several symphonies, and the opera Eugene Onegin. The Nutcracker is an 1892 two-act ballet originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Op. 71). The libretto is adapted from E. T. A. Hoffmann's 1816 short story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. The Nutcracker and the Mouse King is a story written in 1816 by Prussian author E. T. A. Hoffmann, in which young Marie Stahlbaum's favorite Christmas toy, the Nutcracker, comes alive and, after defeating the evil Mouse King in battle, whisks her away to a magical kingdom populated by dolls. This waltz is from the end of Act One. In the final scene of Act One, the mice retreat and the nutcracker is transformed into a handsome Prince. He leads Clara through the moonlit night to a pine forest in which the snowflakes dance around them, beckoning them on to his kingdom as the first act ends. The PDF contains the full score and all parts.

Cello,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.522284 Composed by Colin Kirkpatrick. Concert,Holiday,Love,Patriotic. Score and part. 25 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #6538731. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522284). This collection follows on from the collection The Island of Dreams, also available from the same publisher. Return to the Island of Dreams consists of ten elementary cello pieces which are musical sketches of a magical island somewhere in South East Asia. The pieces can be performed entirely in first position. They are intended as supplementary material to your usual teaching materials. There’s plenty of contrasting music for the student recital or an end-of-semester concert. Also, these pieces could be used for sight-reading practice for intermediate students. Your cello students are sure to find these pieces enjoyable and challenging. Every piece has a short keyboard introduction so that the student can sense the tempo and musical style before playing. The accompaniments have been kept as simple as possible. Dynamic markings are used from the start, and some articulations marks (notably staccato) are used. Several pieces have a few measures rest in the middle to give the player a break and add musical contrast and also to give experience of counting empty bars. The album consists of piano-cello score and a separate cello solo part both contained in a single PDF file. The audio sample contains the following pieces (1) Asian Dawn; (2) Skybird; (3) Ocean Song; (5) Dance of the Earth Spirits; (7) Call of the Homeland and (9) March of the Hill Children.

Gaillarde (La Rocque), First Book of Dances (Pierre Phalèse, 1571) for Wind Instruments

Small Ensemble - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.522179 Composed by Pierre Phalèse. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Christmas,Holiday,Renaissance. Score and parts. 25 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #6097857. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522179). Pierre Phalèse (1510-1575) was a Flemish publisher and his First Book of Dances, an extensive collection of dances in four parts, was published in Leuven in 1571. They are attractive pieces and are sure to be popular at any concerts, public recitals or end-of-semester events. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the gaillarde (or galliard) was a popular dance and a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I of England. This is the 11th dance in a set of 20 gaillardes in the original publication. The title might be a reference to a French surname (Larocque) or it might refer to the small town on the island of Jersey (La Rocque) in the Channel Islands. From the Middle Ages, the its harbour was a refuge for fishing boats. This arrangement is scored for virtually any combination of conventional wind instruments with optional percussion and keyboard parts. The flexible arrangement makes them playable by non-standard ensembles. The optional keyboard part enables you to use the piece as a solo or duet and trio for mixed instruments. This 4-part arrangement is presented in a single PDF file which includes the Full Score; Part 1 (C, B flat, E flat); Part 2 (C, B flat, E flat); Part 3 (C, F, B flat, E flat), Part 4 (C, B flat, E flat); Keyboard and Percussion. A piano sounds distinctly out of place in this music and a digital or acoustic harpsichord sounds more authentic. Most electronic keyboards have a harpsichord option. The percussion instruments used are similar to those found in elementary school music rooms and two or three players are usually required. Other percussion instruments may be added as desired. Dance music is intended to be fun, and we hope that this arrangement brings you just that.
