Five Foot Two (Has Anybody Seen My Gal)

Brass Quintet - Advanced Intermediate - Digital Download Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Score, Set of Parts. 31 pages. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press
The popular song ?Five Foot Two? dates back to 1914. So who wrote it? Good question, since the song was changed so often. Leo Feist, Inc. published a version in 1925 crediting Ray Henderson with music; Sam Lewis and Joseph Widow Young, with words. That same year The California Ramblers made the song?s first recording and used the Feist-published version. Since then, ?Five Foot Two? has been recorded many times by many different artists as well as being used in film and TV productions.
This arrangement was inspired by a vocal interpretation the arranger heard in the 1950s while working at an Adirondacks resort hotel. It starts and ends with brief slow sections but most of the way through breezes along at a suggested 112 tempo. All notes are within normal playing range of the five instruments, although Tuba does play its lowest E and F a couple of times. The melody consists mainly of half notes, quarter notes and whole notes, but the variations include lots of eighth notes and a few tricky rhythms. Written as a companion piece to Sweetwater Brass? popular ?Somebody Stole My Gal,? this ?Five Foot Two? is upbeat and fun and includes plenty of delightful 1920s-style doo-wacka-doo and ricky-ticky turns.
Completed in 2020, performance time for ?Five Foot Two? runs about 2 minutes, 39 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge; contact him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. Marimba duet - Digital Download Composed by Francis Poulenc (1899-1963). Arranged by Jeff Gorbski. Score and Parts. 20 pages. Imagine Music Publishing #PES185. Published by Imagine Music Publishing
Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) was born to a wealthy industrialist family in Paris on January 7, 1899. His mother was an amateur pianist and piano teacher, and as such musical soirees at the home were a regular occurrence. She gave Poulenc his first piano lessons, which led him to become a capable pianist himself.<br> <br> Poulenc quickly became caught up in the intellectual currents of early twentieth century Paris, and eventually became part of a group of fellow Parisian composers known as Les Six. The name originated in response to (or in competition with) the 'Russian Five' (which included Rimsky-Korsakov), and the lightness and playfulness of the music of Les Six was a marked contrast to the large scale, and sometimes bombastic, Russian orchestrations. However, even though Les Six was dedicated to turning music away from the syrupy and amorphous world of Impressionism, the members of the group insisted they were simply friends with no communal musical aims.<br> <br> Without any formal lessons in composition initially, Poulenc nonetheless gained success and notoriety as a composer by the time he was 18 years old, with no less than Stravinsky himself promoting his works. In 1918, while serving in the military, he composed perhaps his most popular piano piece, Trois Mouvements Perpetuels.<br> <br> As will be obvious while listening to this two marimba arrangement, Poulenc's music is direct and tuneful, considered by many to be his major strength. His music combines wit and irony juxtaposed with the sentimental and melancholy. Using conventional harmonies in unique and clever ways, he produced fresh and appealing melodies consisting of bright colors and clear rhythm.<br> <br> In Mouvements 1, we hear an ostinato in the lower marimba, while the upper marimba plays a sprightly, albeit quirky, melody. Mouvements 2 is a more moody construction, perhaps even introspective. Yet, in the first two Mouvements, there are no real performance difficulties associated with the music.<br> Practice time on these two pieces would be well spent on nuancing balance and phrasing. Mouvements 3, however, requires agile 4-mallet technique from both players. The opening bars in the Marimba 1 part, the rhythmic coordination in measures 8-11, 16-19, and 24-27, as well as maintaining the driving and spirited melodic lines are all areas of concern for the performers in this movement.<br> <br> This piece is dedicated to John Monday and Yu-Yun Chiang, two of the most talented marimbists with whom I have had the pleasure of working.

2 voices and piano - intermediate - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q47807 Das Liederspiel. Composed by Engelbert Humperdinck. This edition: single sheet. Singspiel version - fairy tale - Brothers Grimm - folk song - piano reduction - Hansel - Gretel - witch. Downloadable, Separate edition. Duration 55 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q47807. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q47807). German. When Engelbert Humperdinck’s fairy tale opera Hänsel und Gretel was premiered on 23 December 1893 in Weimar conducted by Richard Strauss, the work could look back on an extensive history of origin.Humperdinck’s younger sister Adelheid Wette (born in 1858) had displayed a great interest in literature in her youth and written a variety of poems for special occasions. In 1888, she wrote a fairy tale entitled Schneewittchen [Snow White] and her brother supplied some songs for this piece. Further fairy tale collaborations followed which were customarily performed within the family circle, and the first draft of the Hänsel und Gretel was begun in 1890. Adelheid’s husband would be celebrating his 34th birthday on 16 May of this year and his wife intended to surprise him with a performance of her version of this fairy tale. Her brother was allotted the task of composing the accompanying songs and, a month before the birthday, she wrote a letter to him in Mainz where Engelbert Humperdinck was among other activities working as an editor for the Schott publishing house, ordering a “very pretty folkloric†Tanzlied [Dance song], a Waldlied [Forest song] (or Echolied [Echo song]), a Schlummerlied [Lullaby] and a Kickericki-Lied [Cock-a-doodle-doo song] from her “dear sugar-sweet little brother... Engel-Bärtchen [angel beard]â€. She enclosed the corresponding verses with the letter and “for fun†also provided her own invented melody for the Schlummerlied and rhythmic suggestions for the Tanzlied. Humperdinck went straight to work and, as related in an entry in his diary, was already able to play the songs to the director of the publishing house, Dr Ludwig Strecker, by 19 April. This was the history of origin of the four songs published for the first time edited in form of their original versions in this edition Brüderchen komm’ tanz’ mit mir, Wer ruft mir im Walde doch alles nach, In den Zweigen die Vögelein und Tirelireli! ‘s ist nicht mehr früh “for two children’s voices and piano accompaniment†(see manuscript1). In his reply letter to his sister in which the fair copy of the songs were enclosed, Humperdinck wrote: “As you see, the pitch of the melodies is not too high and I have incorporated your melodies. Let me know soon whether you like the little songs. By the way, the ‘cock-a-doodle-doo’ can also be sung on one note(E flat) instead of on the four notes of the chord.â€The first performance of the song-play was held as planned within the family circle with Wettes’ two eldest daughters in the two principle roles. Spurred on by the success of the family performance, initial plans were forged to adapt the song-play into a singspiel with numerous musical numbers and rhymed dialogues; Hermann Wette participated in a draft of the text. The particell of this singspiel had been completed by Christmas 1890. Hugo Wolf and a few others however advised the composer to extend the singspiel into a through-composed fairy tale opera. Humperdinck followed this advice and worked on what he ironically termed as a “Kinderstubenweihfestspiel“ [sacred festive play for the nursery] during the next two summers in Bayreuth. Tanzliedchen [Dance song] and Morgenweckruf [Cock-a-doodle-doo song] were eventually included in the opera in a modified form.

Full Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1374158 Composed by Igor Stravinsky. Arranged by A. Leytush. 20th Century. 94 pages. Arkady Leytush #958734. Published by Arkady Leytush (A0.1374158). This 4-part suite is called Serenade in A. This name, chosen by its author, completely exhausts the content of this music and emphasizes the main idea of the composition, as well as the tonality of all parts. Each part provides comprehensive details in this series and has its own title. I emphasize that this is by no means a programmatic essay. The nature of each part and their internal content pushed me to follow my interpretation of each part in the orchestral transcription. 1. Hymne is essentially nothing more than a Hymn of love! His character, sublime above the everyday, is, as it were, raised to the surface and presented in bright, broad strokes as an irrefutable truth. 2. Romanza - I perceive it as a kind of parody of a love romance with the main sentiments and elements inherent in this genre. This is by no means a refutation of love, but only some irony over the false, pretentious way of expressing this feeling. The grotesque character is emphasized whenever possible by the orchestration. 3. Rondoletto - this part, from the very beginning in my orchestration, resembles the multi-voiced play of musicians preparing to play, testing the sound of their instruments, tuning them and playing out. 4. Cadenza Finala - the nature of the music is the union and rapture of love. In my orchestration there can be traced duets of various instruments and orchestra groups such as: a pair of Flutes, a pair of Oboes, Clarinets, Trumpets, Trombones, 1st and 2nd Violins. This feature of the pairs I have chosen should emphasize their relationship and relatedness.
